Usefulness of FDG-PET/CT in the detection of pancreatic metastases from lung cancer.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the ability to detect pancreatic metastasis of lung cancer and to clarify the degree of fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) accumulation and computed tomography (CT) characteristics of pancreatic metastasis from lung cancer. METHODS: A total of 573 patients (415 men and 158 women) with lung cancer were retrospectively evaluated. All patients underwent FDG-positron emission tomography (PET)/CT with contrast-enhanced CT for first=stage (313 patients; initial study group) or follow-up study (260 patients; follow-up study group). A lesion was regarded as

The maximum standardized uptake values on positron emission tomography to predict the Noguchi classification and invasiveness in clinical stage IA adenocarcinoma measuring 2 cm or less in size.

This study investigated whether the standardized uptake value (SUV) of the tumor correlated with the Noguchi classification and tumor invasiveness in patients with clinical stage IA adenocarcinoma < or = 2 cm in size. Fifty-four patients that underwent a curative surgical resection for clinical stage IA adenocarcinoma < or = 2 cm from April 2005 to December 2008 had integrated positron emission tomography (PET)-computed tomography (CT) with 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) as part of the preoperative workup. The relationships between the maximum SUV (SUVmax) and Noguchi classification, pathologica

18F-FDG PET imaging of progressive massive fibrosis.

PURPOSE: This study was to evaluate (18)F-FDG PET features of progressive massive fibrosis (PMF) and to determine the ability of FDG PET to differentiate pure PMF from PMF-associated lung cancer. METHODS: (18)F-FDG PET and chest computed tomography (CT) scans were performed in 9 patients with pneumoconiosis and PMF. Patients who showed active pulmonary tuberculosis on CT scan were excluded. Pure PMF was confirmed via either fine needle aspiration biopsy (n = 6) or 12 months follow-up CT scan (n = 3). CT features and PET findings were evaluated for distribution of fibrotic masses, consolidatio

Focal increased activity in the liver on 18F-FDG PET scan secondary to brachiocephalic vein and superior vena cava obstruction.

We present 2 cases demonstrating focal increased activity in the liver on 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography scans resulting from central venous obstruction and increased blood flow to select regions of the liver via collateral veins. Collateral venous pathways from anterior chest wall veins to the portal veins can form via paraumbilical veins (including the vein of Burrow and the superior and inferior veins of Sappey) or subcapsular veins of the liver via musculophrenic vessels. Imagers should be familiar with the phenomenon of focally increased uptake of 18F-fluorodeoxygluco

Cerebral glucose metabolism in Fisher syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Fisher syndrome (FS) is characterised by a triad of ophthalmoplegia, ataxia and areflexia. The lesion sites responsible for ataxia and ophthalmoplegia in FS require further exploration. The aim of this study was to determine the involvement of the central nervous system in FS using (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography (FDG-PET). METHODS: Cerebral glucose metabolism in 10 patients with FS was compared with that of 60 age and sex matched normal controls using PET. For individual analyses, 15 age and sex matched controls were selected from the control group. Patients

Correlation between pretreatment FDG-PET biological target volume and anatomical location of failure after radiation therapy for head and neck cancers.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To assess whether the pretreatment FDG-PET-defined biologic target volume (PET-BTV) correlates with the anatomical sites of loco-regional failure (LRF) after RT for head and neck cancer (HNC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively identified 61 HNC patients treated definitively with either 3-D CRT or IMRT who had a pre-therapy PET/CT. The GTV and high-risk CTV(1) definitions included composite data obtained from diagnostic CT, PET/CT, physical examination, and MRI when available. The median CTV(1) dose was 70Gy. 95% received chemotherapy. For patients with LRF, a r

Right prefrontal hypometabolism predicts delusions in dementia with Lewy bodies.

Delusions (DEL) are frequent in dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB); however, the neural equivalent is poorly understood. The present study therefore aimed to identify the cerebral metabolic pattern of glucose of a DLB group suffering from DEL (DLB+DEL) as compared to a non-delusional group (DLB-DEL) and a control group (NL); and to determine the predictive value of the regional metabolic deficit for DEL symptomatology in comparison to other clinical variables significantly associated with DEL. Voxel-wise comparisons were conducted between the patient and control groups in SPM2. The most significa

Prognostic value of metabolic imaging in non-small cell lung cancers with neoplasic pleural effusion.

BACKGROUND: The intensity of the [F]fluorodeoxyglucose (F-FDG) uptake is an independent prognostic indicator in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We evaluate the relationship between the metabolic activity of the primary and the pleurisy in T4 NSCLC. METHODS: 25 patients (16 males, nine females, mean age 63 years, performance status 1) with pathology-proven, T4 NSCLC and malignant pleurisy were included. All were treated by a platinum salt-based chemotherapy regimen. Positron emission tomography (F-FDG-PET) was performed before treatment, according to a routine procedure. Regions of interes

18F-FDG uptake in reactive neck lymph nodes of oral cancer: relationship to lymphoid follicles.

UNLABELLED: PET using (18)F-FDG is acceptable as a preoperative diagnostic tool for head and neck cancer. PET combined with CT provides precise localization of neck lymph nodes. Reactive lymphadenopathy is well known as a principal cause of false-positive findings on PET/CT for nodal staging. We investigated the reactive lymph nodes of oral cancer to elucidate the (18)F-FDG-avid area in these nodes. METHODS: Surgically dissected neck lymph nodes of oral cancer were retrospectively reviewed. Of the patients without pathologic nodal metastasis who underwent preoperative PET/CT, 11 patients with

Clinical evaluation of the effect of attenuation correction technique on 18F-fluoride PET images.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate effect of attenuation correction technique on 18F-fluoride positron emission tomography (PET). METHODS: We performed PET scans after the injection of 185 MBq 18F-fluoride on 32 patients from October 20th, 2004 to April 13th, 2005. We calculated bone-to-muscle ratios for the images with and without attenuation correction. We placed regions of interest (ROIs) on normal bone accumulation in 22 patients. The exclusion criteria were bone metastasis, Paget's disease, and rheumatoid arthritis. Several regions were chosen for ROI placement: skull, c

FDG-PET in T-cell and NK-cell neoplasms.

BACKGROUND: A growing number of studies demonstrate the utility of (18)fluoro-2-deoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) in the management of malignant lymphoma. The results of FDG-PET, however, have not been studied extensively for T-cell and natural killer (NK)-cell neoplasms. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated pretreatment FDG-PET scans in 41 patients with T/NK-cell neoplasms diagnosed according to the World Health Organization (WHO) classification. Histological subtypes frequently included were peripheral T-cell lymphoma, unspecified (PTCLu, n = 11), extranodal

Utility of 18F-FDG PET/CT uptake patterns in Waldeyer's ring for differentiating benign from malignant lesions in lateral pharyngeal recess of nasopharynx.

UNLABELLED: Focally increased (18)F-FDG uptake in the lateral pharyngeal recess (LPR) of the nasopharynx due to a benign or malignant lesion is not an uncommon finding on PET images. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether, on PET/CT images, (18)F-FDG uptake occurs with characteristic patterns and intensities in various regions of Waldeyer's ring that can improve our ability to differentiate benign from malignant lesions. METHODS: Data generated from the (18)F-FDG PET/CT images of 1,628 subjects in our cancer-screening program were analyzed. Increased uptake in the LPR was observed in 8

[Mediastinal lymph node metastasis of thyroid cancer occurring 15 years after the initial operation; report of a case].

A 71-year-old woman was found to have an abnormal shadow on a chest X-ray. Fifteen years earlier she had undergone a subtotal thyroidectomy for thyroid cancer without any lymph node metastasis. Chest computed tomography (CT) revealed a mediastinal tumor with full of blood stream. Since the positron emission tomography (PET) disclosed an increased uptake of fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) in the tumor, a malignant lymphatic tumor was therefore suspected. An immunohistological examination of biopsy specimens taken by thoracoscopic procedure demonstrated tumor to be lymph node metastasis of the pr

18F-FET PET compared with 18F-FDG PET and CT in patients with head and neck cancer.

UNLABELLED: Recent studies suggest a somewhat selective uptake of O-(2-[18F]fluoroethyl)-L-tyrosine (FET) in cerebral gliomas and in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and a good distinction between tumor and inflammation. The aim of this study was to investigate the diagnostic potential of 18F-FET PET in patients with SCC of the head and neck region by comparing that tracer with 18F-FDG PET and CT. METHODS: Twenty-one patients with suspected head and neck tumors underwent 18F-FET PET, 18F-FDG PET, and CT within 1 wk before operation. After coregistration, the images were evaluated by 3 independen

Recurrent hepatoblastoma with localization by PET-CT.

Hepatoblastoma is the most common primary liver tumor in children, accounting for 79% of pediatric liver malignancies in children younger than 15 years, with most cases reported before the age of 5 years. Localization of primary and recurrent disease is necessary for appropriate clinical decision-making and treatment. We present a case of recurrent hepatoblastoma heralded by rising alpha-fetoprotein levels. After unsuccessful localization by conventional CT and MRI, positron emission tomography CT imaging localized the sites of recurrence.

The metabolic topography of posthypoxic myoclonus.

Posthypoxic myoclonus (PHM) is a syndrome of action and intention myoclonus that occurs in some patients who survive a cardiac arrest. Using PET and statistical parametric mapping, the authors observed a significant bilateral increase in glucose metabolism in the ventrolateral thalamus and pontine tegmentum in patients relative to controls. Interventions such as deep brain stimulation that interrupt networks that involve these structures may be useful in patients with severe PHM.
