BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Management of open crural fractures is challenging and requires close interdisciplinary collaboration. Dutch guidelines recommend soft tissue coverage, ideally within 72 h, no later than 1-week post-injury. The guideline does not recommend centralization or volume per center. This poses significant challenges in clinical practice. This study assessed current practice in the Netherlands regarding case volume, organization of care and timing of procedures, while also exploring barriers and facilitators for fracture fixation and soft tissue closure (fix and flap) within 72

BACKGROUND: The rising demand for improved aesthetics has driven the utilization of recently introduced aesthetic materials for creating custom post and core restorations. However, information regarding the fracture resistance of these materials remains unclear, which limits their practical use as custom post and core restorations in clinical applications. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to evaluate the fracture resistance of three non-metallic esthetic post and core restorations and their modes of failure.

BACKGROUND: Orthopedic implant removal following open reduction internal fixation of a fracture is a common procedure, especially in the foot and ankle. The purpose of this study was to evaluate functional change after the removal of symptomatic implants following ankle fracture open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) using the Short Musculoskeletal Function Assessment (SMFA) outcome score. We hypothesized that implant removal after ankle fracture would result in improved functional outcomes.
METHODS: Retrospective review of prospectively collected data on patients with a closed ankle fractur

There exist controversies in the surgical treatment of maisonneuve injury with regard to reduction and fixation of syndesmosis and management of proximal fibular fracture. It is very important for the orthopaedic surgeons to learn more techniques and avoid pitfalls from clinical practice. We summarized the clinical data of 1 failed case, a 20-year-old girl with big body weight who underwent a primary surgery for the treatment of maisonneuve fracture with minimally invasive reduction and fixation of ankle syndesmosis and posterior malleolus and open reduction and internal fixation of medial mal

BACKGROUND: Though traumatic posterior fossa epidural hematoma (PFEDH) is rare, the associated rates of morbidity and mortality are higher than those of supratentorial epidural hematoma (SEDH). Signs and symptoms may be silent and slow, but rapid deterioration may set in, resulting in death. With the more frequent use of computed tomography (CT), early diagnosis can be achieved in patients with cranial fractures who have suffered traumatic injury to the posterior fossa. However, some hematomas appear insignificant or are absent on initial tomography scans, and can only be detected by serial CT

INTRODUCTION: Myxofibrosarcoma (MFS) is among the most common soft-tissue sarcomas of the extremities in elderly patients; however, presentation as a pathological fracture is exceptionally rare. The tumor's fluid-rich myxoid matrix produces magnetic resonance imaging signal characteristics that closely mimic benign vascular lesions, creating a significant diagnostic challenge when encountered outside a tertiary setting. We report a case of low-grade myxofibrosarcoma presenting as a pathological pilon fracture.
CASE REPORT: A 60-year-old male presented with a 2-week history of ankle pain follo

INTRODUCTION: Infected Nonunion is a challenging condition that arises from infections at the fracture site, causing persistent inflammation and preventing proper healing of the fracture ends. This condition not only causes significant physical suffering but also imposes a heavy economic burden on patients. Despite the recognized link between Infected Nonunion and infection, the mechanisms underlying its occurrence and development remain incompletely understood. Recent studies have highlighted the close association between inflammatory factors and Infected Nonunion, suggesting that inflammatio

AIMS: This study aimed to demonstrate the promoting effect of elastic fixation on fracture, and further explore its mechanism at the gene and protein expression levels.
METHODS: A closed tibial fracture model was established using 12 male Japanese white rabbits, and divided into elastic and stiff fixation groups based on different fixation methods. Two weeks after the operation, a radiograph and pathological examination of callus tissue were used to evaluate fracture healing. Then, the differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were examined in the callus using proteomics. Finally, in vitro cel

Pelvic fractures sometimes lead to injuries of the urinary bladder, which commonly present as gross hematuria, dysuria and lower abdominal pain. As a type of urinary stone, bladder stones are usually secondary to lower urinary tract obstruction, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia, urethral stricture, and neurogenic bladder. The present case report examines an unusual case of a delayed pubic fracture penetrating the bladder, which caused a secondary bladder stone. A 53-year-old man was first hospitalized at The Second Hospital of Jiaxing (Jiaxing, China) in January 2020 because of trauma-indu

BACKGROUND: Several recent studies have shown that preperitoneal pelvic packing (PPP) effectively produces hemostasis in patients with unstable pelvic fractures. However, few studies have examined the rate of surgical site infections (SSIs) in patients undergoing PPP following an unstable pelvic fracture. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate factors associated with SSI in such patients.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical charts of 188 patients who developed hemorrhagic shock due to pelvic fracture between April 2012 and May 2021. Forty-four patients were enrolled in

Catastrophic musculoskeletal injuries (CMI) pose a major welfare concern to horses and their riders, yet limited data are available describing their occurrence in South America. Using a retrospective cohort and case-control design, the objective of the study was to determine the incidence of CMI for Thoroughbreds in training and racing, and associated horse-level risk factors in Uruguay. Seventy-seven Thoroughbreds sustained a CMI, 37 of which were age- and sex-matched to 111 control horses in the same race. Training and racing data from 2011 to 2017 were collected. Incidence of race day CMI p

BACKGROUND: Severe kyphotic deformities carry high risk for neurological injuries as osteotomies are often required for correction. Surgeons often utilize a staged approach for dealing with these conditions starting with a period of halo traction to stretch tight soft tissues and partially correct the deformity, followed by surgery. Halo traction is a relatively safe procedure and complications are uncommon. We report a unique case of iatrogenic fracture of the cervical spine during gradual halo traction for deformity correction of a severe cervical kyphosis.
