Investigating time distortion in Parkinson's disease considering impaired frontoparietal network and changes in the brain dynamic.

Objective. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by a range of motor and non-motor symptoms. Despite extensive research, the neural structure of time distortion, remains unclear. This study aimed to determine the neurobiological origins of time distortion by analyzing dynamic features in PD patients compared to control participants.Approach. We used PD and control electroencephalography (EEG) signals to investigate brain function during time distortion. The EEG signal was recorded during an interval-timing task. Following artifact reduction and EEG signal segme

Neural mechanisms of enhanced emotional experience during live sports viewing: Multimodal evidence from fNIRS and EEG.

The real-time nature and outcome uncertainty of live sports viewing can shape viewer' emotional experiences through suspense, yet the neural mechanisms remain unclear. This study employed simultaneous fNIRS-EEG recording, combined with behavioral measures, to systematically examine suspense-driven emotional arousal and its neural basis during live versus replayed table tennis matches. Behaviorally, participants reported significantly stronger suspense, higher emotional arousal, and greater pleasure in the live condition compared to the replay condition. Neuroimaging results showed that live vi

Accelerated intermittent theta burst stimulation targeting personalized fronto-parietal control network improves core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder: a double-blind, randomized controlled trial.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) presents a substantial global challenge, yet no pharmacological treatments effectively target its core symptoms, especially in individuals with severe cognitive or adaptive impairments. This double-blind, sham-controlled, randomized clinical trial assessed accelerated intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) targeting the personalized fronto-parietal network (FPN) in ASD. Participants (6-30 years) were randomized in a 2:1 ratio to active or sham iTBS (three daily sessions, 1800 pulses/session) over 12 weeks (324k pulses) alongside behavioral training. The prim

Frontal and temporo-parietal changes in delta and alpha power accompany stress-induced vasoconstriction and blood pressure response.

Exaggerated blood pressure and vasoconstriction responses during acute mental stress are prospectively associated with an increased risk of hypertension, arrhythmia, and vascular dysfunction. This study assessed electrophysiological brain power and cardiovascular response to acute psychological stress during concurrent recordings of magnetoencephalography, muscle sympathetic nerve activity, and blood pressure in 29 healthy participants. Brain power was filtered through delta (1-4 Hz), theta (4-8 Hz), alpha (8-13 Hz), beta (13-30 Hz), low gamma (30-80 Hz), and high gamma (80-120 Hz) bands. Stre

Functional differentiation and interactions among inferior, medial frontal and posterior temporal cortex in semantic control.

Semantic control enables flexible retrieval and manipulation of stored knowledge. A left-lateralized network including the inferior frontal gyrus, posterior middle temporal gyrus, and dorsal medial prefrontal cortex has been implicated in this process. However, the functional differentiation within each region and their interactions remain unclear. Combining functional MRI and transcranial magnetic stimulation, we demonstrate that all three regions are causally involved in semantic control. Anterior subregions are engaged under hard semantic tasks, whereas posterior subregions respond more gen

Neuropathological Institutions of Small Amiloid Beta и Neurofibrilar Tangles in Multial Sclerosis Cortex.

Association Between Wnt Target Genes and Cortical Volumes in Alzheimer's Disease.

The disproportionate cortical atrophy is an established biomarker for the pathophysiological process of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the genetic basis underlying the cortical atrophy remains poorly defined. Herein, we aim to illustrate the effect of the Wnt target genes on the cortical volumes of AD patients. 82 sporadic AD patients were recruited. All the subjects had history survey, blood biochemical examination, cognitive assessment, MRI morphometry and whole exome sequencing. This report focused on 84 common variants (minor allele frequency > 0.01) of 32 Wnt target genes, including t

Frontoparietal network homogeneity as a biomarker for mania and remitted bipolar disorder and a predictor of early treatment response in bipolar mania patient.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have revealed the frontoparietal network (FPN) plays a key role in the imaging pathophysiology of bipolar disorder (BD). However, network homogeneity (NH) in the FPN among bipolar mania (BipM), remitted bipolar disorder (rBD), and healthy controls (HCs) remains unknown. The present study aimed to explore whether NH within the FPN can be used as an imaging biomarker to differentiate BipM from rBD and to predict treatment efficacy for patients with BipM. METHODS: Sixty-six patients with BD (38 BipM and 28 rBD) and 60 HCs participated in resting-state functional magne

Neural representations of ensemble coding in the occipital and parietal cortices.

The human visual system is able to extract summary statistics from sets of similar items, but the underlying neural mechanism remains poorly understood. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and an encoding model, we examined how the neural representation of ensemble coding is constructed by manipulating the task-relevance of ensemble features. We found a gradual increase in orientation-selective responses to the mean orientation of multiple stimuli along the visual hierarchy only when these orientations were task-relevant. Such responses to the ensemble orientation were present i

Biased Neural Representation of Feature-Based Attention in the Human Frontoparietal Network.

Selective attention is a core cognitive function for efficient processing of information. Although it is well known that attention can modulate neural responses in many brain areas, the computational principles underlying attentional modulation remain unclear. Contrary to the prevailing view of a high-dimensional, distributed neural representation, here we show a surprisingly simple, biased neural representation for feature-based attention in a large dataset including five human fMRI studies. We found that when human participants (both sexes) selected one feature from a compound stimulus, voxe

Neural bases of the clinical and neurocognitive differences between earlyand late-onset obsessive–compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Using biological evidence to define subtypes within the heterogeneous population with obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) is important for improving treatment response. Based on age at onset, OCD can be clustered into 2 groups, each of which is more homogeneous with respect to clinical and cognitive phenotype. However, the neural bases for these phenotypic differences need to be established to construct evidence-based homogeneous groups. METHODS: We compared brain volumes, clinical symptoms, and neurocognitive function for 49 people with early-onset OCD and 52 with late-onset OCD

Microstructural disruption of the right inferior fronto-occipital and inferior longitudinal fasciculus contributes to WMH-related cognitive impairment.

AIMS: White matter hyperintensity (WMH) is the most common neuroimaging manifestation of cerebral small vessel disease and is related to cognitive dysfunction or dementia. This study aimed to investigate the mechanism and effective indicators to predict WMH-related cognitive impairment. METHODS: We recruited 22 healthy controls (HC), 25 cases of WMH with normal cognition (WMH-NC), and 23 cases of WMH with mild cognitive impairment (WMH-MCI). All individuals underwent diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and a standardized neuropsychological assessment. Automated Fiber Quantification was used to ext

On the Neural and Mechanistic Bases of Self-Control.

Intertemporal choice requires a dynamic interaction between valuation and deliberation processes. While evidence identifying candidate brain areas for each of these processes is well established, the precise mechanistic role carried out by each brain region is still debated. In this article, we present a computational model that clarifies the unique contribution of frontoparietal cortex regions to intertemporal decision making. The model we develop samples reward and delay information stochastically on a moment-by-moment basis. As preference for the choice alternatives evolves, dynamic inhibit

Temporal-Order-Based Attentional Priority Modulates Mnemonic Representations in Parietal and Frontal Cortices.

The respective roles of occipital, parietal, and frontal cortices in visual working memory maintenance have long been under debate. Previous work on whether parietal and frontal regions convey mnemonic information has yielded mixed findings. One possibility for this variability is that the mnemonic representations in high-level frontoparietal regions are modulated by attentional priority, such as temporal order. To test this hypothesis, we examined whether the most recent item, which has a higher attentional priority in terms of temporal order, is preferentially encoded in frontoparietal regio

Adaptive paradigms for mapping phonological regions in individual participants.

Phonological encoding depends on left-lateralized regions in the supramarginal gyrus and the ventral precentral gyrus. Localization of these phonological regions in individual participants-including individuals with language impairments-is important in several research and clinical contexts. To localize these regions, we developed two paradigms that load on phonological encoding: a rhyme judgment task and a syllable counting task. Both paradigms relied on an adaptive staircase design to ensure that each individual performed each task at a similarly challenging level. The goal of this study was

The effect of frontoparietal paired associative stimulation on decision-making and working memory.

Previous single-site neurostimulation experiments have unsuccessfully attempted to shift decision-making away from habitual control, a fast, inflexible cognitive strategy, towards goal-directed control, a flexible, though computationally expensive strategy. We employed a dual-target neurostimulation approach in 30 healthy participants, using cortico-cortical paired associative stimulation (ccPAS) to target two key nodes: lateral prefrontal cortex (LPFC) and intraparietal sulcus (IPS), to test whether decision-making can be artificially shifted from habitual toward goal-directed control. Partic

Cortical control of eye movements in natural reading: Evidence from MVPA.

Language comprehension during reading requires fine-grained management of saccadic eye movements. A critical question, therefore, is how the brain controls eye movements in reading. Neural correlates of simple eye movements have been found in multiple cortical regions, but little is known about how this network operates in reading. To investigate this question in the present study, participants were presented with normal text, pseudo-word text, and consonant string text in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner with eyetracking. Participants read naturally in the normal text condition and

Nonlinear analysis of EEG complexity in episode and remission phase of recurrent depression.

OBJECTIVES: Biomarkers of major depressive disorder (MDD), its phases and forms have long been sought. Objectives were to examine whether the complexity of EEG activity, measured by Higuchi's fractal dimension (HFD) and sample entropy (SampEn), differs between healthy subjects, patients in remission, and in episode phase of the recurrent depression and whether the changes are differentially distributed between hemispheres and cortical regions. METHODS: Resting state EEG with eyes closed was recorded from 22 patients suffering from recurrent depression (11 in remission, 11 in the episode), and

Differences in frontotemporal dysfunction during social and non-social cognition tasks between patients with autism spectrum disorder and schizophrenia.

Although literature evidence suggests deficits in social and non-social cognition in patients with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) and schizophrenia (SCZ), the difference in neural correlates of the impairments between the two disorders has not been elucidated. We examined brain function in response to a non-social cognition and a social cognition task using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) in 13 patients with ASD, 15 patients with SCZ, and 18 healthy subjects. We assessed the brain function of participants using a verbal fluency task and an emotional facial recognition task. The
