Eye gaze patterns and functional brain responses during emotional face processing in adolescents with conduct disorder.

BACKGROUND: Conduct disorder (CD) is characterized by severe aggressive and antisocial behavior. Initial evidence suggests neural deficits and aberrant eye gaze pattern during emotion processing in CD; both concepts, however, have not yet been studied simultaneously. The present study assessed the functional brain correlates of emotional face processing with and without consideration of concurrent eye gaze behavior in adolescents with CD compared to typically developing (TD) adolescents. METHODS: 58 adolescents (23CD/35TD; average age = 16 years/range = 14-19 years) underwent an implicit emot

Magnetic resonance imaging markers reflect cognitive outcome after rehabilitation in children with acquired brain injury.

PURPOSE: To test markers from conventional and diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) as possible predictors of cognitive outcome following rehabilitation therapy in children with acquired brain injury (ABI). METHODS: Twenty-one children (10 boys, mean age 11.6 years, range 7.1-19.4) with stroke or traumatic brain injury underwent MRI including Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) before admission to the rehabilitation centre. The conventional images were scored according to a standardised injury scoring system, and mean Fractional Anisotropy (FA) was determined within the Corpus Callosum (CC),

Effects of platelet-rich plasma on mesenchymal stem cells isolated from rat uterus.

UNLABELLED: We introduce a brain-constrained neurocomputational model designed to simulate higher cognitive functions of the human brain, implemented using NEST, a widely used open-source simulator optimised for high-performance spiking neural network simulations. Previously implemented in the custom-built C-based Felix simulation library, transitioning the model to NEST enhances accessibility, reproducibility, and computational efficiency. At the cellular level, the model comprises spiking excitatory neurons and local inhibitory neurons, whereas at the network level, it replicates the structu

Changes in Brain Function and Structure After Self-Administered Home Photobiomodulation Treatment in a Concussion Case.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common neurological disorder among athletes. Although there are no widely accepted treatments for TBI, new investigational approaches, such as photobiomodulation (PBM), are being tested. PBM is a light therapy that uses red to near-infrared (NIR) light to stimulate, heal, and protect tissue that has been injured or is at risk of dying. Benefits following transcranial PBM treatments in animal models of acute TBI and a small number of chronic TBI patients have been reported. However, the human PBM TBI studies published to date have been based on behavioral asses

Brain networks underlying tactile softness perception: A functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

Humans are adept at perceiving physical properties of an object through touch. Tangible object properties can be categorized into two types: macro-spatial properties, including shape and orientation; and material properties, such as roughness, softness, and temperature. Previous neuroimaging studies have shown that roughness and temperature are extracted at nodes of a network, such as that involving the parietal operculum and insula, which is different from the network engaged in processing macro-spatial properties. However, it is unclear whether other perceptual dimensions pertaining to mater

Altered Local and Large-Scale Dynamic Functional Connectivity Variability in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Resting-State fMRI Study.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric condition that can emerge after exposure to an exceedingly traumatic event. Previous neuroimaging studies have indicated that PTSD is characterized by aberrant resting-state functional connectivity (FC). However, few existing studies on PTSD have examined dynamic changes in resting-state FC related to network formation, interaction, and dissolution over time. In this study, we compared the dynamic resting-state local and large-scale FC between PTSD patients (n = 22) and healthy controls (HC; n = 22; conducted as standard deviation in restin

Temporal dynamic changes of intrinsic brain activity in schizophrenia with cigarette smoking.

Mounting evidence from multimodal neuroimaging studies has supported a neurobiological basis for schizophrenia-nicotine dependence comorbidity. However, this evidence comes exclusively from studies measuring static intrinsic activity/connectivity of the brain, while the dynamic effects of this comorbidity remain poorly understood. The current study therefore sought to examine whether temporal dynamic intrinsic brain activity interacted with diagnosis (schizophrenics vs. healthy controls) and smoking status (smokers vs. non-smokers). We used a mixed sample design and included the following four

Anodal Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation to the Left Rostrolateral Prefrontal Cortex Selectively Improves Source Memory Retrieval.

Functional neuroimaging studies have consistently implicated the left rostrolateral prefrontal cortex (RLPFC) as playing a crucial role in the cognitive operations supporting episodic memory and analogical reasoning. However, the degree to which the left RLPFC causally contributes to these processes remains underspecified. We aimed to assess whether targeted anodal stimulation-thought to boost cortical excitability-of the left RLPFC with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) would lead to augmentation of episodic memory retrieval and analogical reasoning task performance in comparison…

Extradural Transjugular Transsigmoid Approach with High Cervical Exposure for Glomus Jugulare Tumor.

Surgical removal of glomus jugulare tumors is challenging owing to the complex anatomy of the temporal bone and craniocervical region, aggressive tumor invasion into the nearby structures, and their hypervascularity. However, recent advances in skull base techniques, intraoperative neuromonitoring, and radiological interventions have enabled their relatively safe resection, while giving priority to functional preservation. This video demonstrates a case of a glomus jugulare tumor treated by the extradural transjugular transsigmoid approach with high-cervical exposure and tympamoplasty, after p

Anticipation of monetary reward in amygdala, insula, caudate are predictors of pleasure sensitivity to d-Amphetamine administration.

BACKGROUND: Drug addiction and dependence continue as an unresolved source of morbidity and mortality. Two approaches to identifying risk for abuse and addiction are psychopharmacological challenge studies and neuroimaging experiments. The present study combined these two approaches by examining associations between self-reported euphoria or liking after a dose of d-amphetamine and neural-based responses to anticipation of a monetary reward. METHODS: Healthy young adults (N = 73) aged 19 and 26, without any history of alcohol/substance dependence completed four laboratory sessions in which th

Not-so-working Memory: Drift in Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Pattern Representations during Maintenance Predicts Errors in a Visual Working Memory Task.

Working memory (WM) is critical to many aspects of cognition, but it frequently fails. Much WM research has focused on capacity limits, but even for single, simple features, the fidelity of individual representations is limited. Why is this? One possibility is that, because of neural noise and interference, neural representations do not remain stable across a WM delay, nor do they simply decay, but instead, they may "drift" over time to a new, less accurate state. We tested this hypothesis in a functional magnetic resonance imaging study of a match/nonmatch WM recognition task for a single ite

Functional and structural correlates of abnormal involuntary movements in psychosis risk and first episode psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal involuntary movements (AIM) may occur throughout the course of psychosis. While AIM are thought to indicate striatal abnormalities, the functional and structural correlates of increased AIM remain elusive. Here, we examined the prevalence of AIM in patients with clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR), first episode psychosis (FEP) and clinical controls (CC). Furthermore, we tested the association of AIM with regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF), grey matter volume (GMV), and premorbid IQ. METHODS: We conducted a video-based analysis of AIM in patients with CHR (n = 45), FE

Recessive GM3 synthase deficiency: Natural history, biochemistry, and therapeutic frontier.

GM3 synthase, encoded by ST3GAL5, initiates synthesis of all downstream cerebral gangliosides. Here, we present biochemical, functional, and natural history data from 50 individuals homozygous for a pathogenic ST3GAL5 c.862C>T founder allele (median age 8.1, range 0.7-30.5 years). GM3 and its derivatives were undetectable in plasma. Weight and head circumference were normal at birth and mean Apgar scores were 7.7 ± 2.0 (1 min) and 8.9 ± 0.5 (5 min). Morphologic changes in the visual cortex of patients with anisometropic amblyopia: a surface-based morphometry study.

BACKGROUND: Amblyopia is generally considered a neurodevelopmental disorder that results from abnormal visual experiences in early childhood and may persist to adulthood. The neural basis of amblyopia has been a matter of interest for many decades, but the critical neural processing sites in amblyopia are not entirely understood. Although many functional neuroimaging studies have found abnormal neuronal responses both within and beyond V1, few studies have focused on the neurophysiologic abnormalities in the visual cortex from the viewpoint of potential structural reorganization. In this study…

Pain-Related Fear-Dissociable Neural Sources of Different Fear Constructs.

Fear of pain demonstrates significant prognostic value regarding the development of persistent musculoskeletal pain and disability. Its assessment often relies on self-report measures of pain-related fear by a variety of questionnaires. However, based either on "fear of movement/(re)injury/kinesiophobia," "fear avoidance beliefs," or "pain anxiety," pain-related fear constructs plausibly differ while it is unclear how specific the questionnaires are in assessing these different constructs. Furthermore, the relationship of pain-related fear to other anxiety measures such as state or trait anxie

Common basis for orofacial clefting and cortical interneuronopathy.

Orofacial clefts (OFCs) of the lip and/or palate are among the most common human birth defects. Current treatment strategies focus on functional and cosmetic repair but even when this care is available, individuals born with OFCs are at high risk for persistent neurobehavioral problems. In addition to learning disabilities and reduced academic achievement, recent evidence associates OFCs with elevated risk for a constellation of psychiatric outcomes including anxiety disorders, autism spectrum disorder, and schizophrenia. The relationship between these outcomes and OFCs is poorly understood an

Functional Activation During a Cognitive Control Task in Healthy Youth Specific to Externalizing or Internalizing Behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Externalizing behaviors are negative behaviors expressed outwardly, including rule breaking, aggression, and risk taking; internalizing behaviors are expressed inwardly, including depression, withdrawal, and anxiety. Such behavior can cause problems in early life and predict difficulties across the lifespan. There is evidence for a relationship between executive function and both externalizing and internalizing. However, although these behaviors occur along a spectrum, there is little neuroimaging research on this relationship in typically developing youth. METHODS: We assessed 41

Augmenting cognitive training in older adults (The ACT Study): Design and Methods of a Phase III tDCS and cognitive training trial.

BACKGROUND: Adults over age 65 represent the fastest growing population in the US. Decline in cognitive abilities is a hallmark of advanced age and is associated with loss of independence and dementia risk. There is a pressing need to develop effective interventions for slowing or reversing the cognitive aging process. While certain forms of cognitive training have shown promise in this area, effects only sometimes transfer to neuropsychological tests within or outside the trained domain. This paper describes a NIA-funded Phase III adaptive multisite randomized clinical trial, examining whethe
