104 chronically ill patients of an average age of 82.7 years were accommodated on geriatric wards of hospitals totaling 152 times during vacation, stay at a health resort, or illness of their attending relatives. On average, they stayed in hospital for 3 to 4 weeks. Main diagnoses were cerebrovascular circulatory disturbances or condition after insultus, chronic ischaemic heart disease, and tumor diseases. The morbidity rate during that stay was 9.2%, the mortality rate 6.8%. In 8 out of 10 cases the immediate cause of death was directly causally associated with the primary disease. Any severe

The majority of patients admitted to hospital after head injury are young men and the characteristics of this group tend to dominate accounts of cranial injury. All patients of 65 years or more admitted to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary neurotrauma unit over a 1-year period were studied and 146 suffering minor head injury were identified. In this group the sex incidence was equal and falls were responsible for two-thirds of the injuries. Alcohol was a contributory factor in over half of the male patients. The incidence of other noteworthy medical and social factors was high and the length of st

With the publication we try to indicate the common work of speech therapist and music-therapist of the medical treatment of aphasic patients after a cerebrovascular accident (stroke). This combined method of medical treatment has been proved best. In the geriatric centre in Berlin-Buch the co-operation is carried out in the following way: the logopaedic diagnosis of the kind of aphasia is so that the speech therapist and music-therapist can start treating the patients suffering from aphasia with special modified therapy programmes which is coordinated with each other. Most patients can be trea

Rectal prolapse occurs mostly in the geriatric female patient and can be a very disabling condition. The etiology is intussusception of the rectosigmoid secondary to excessive and prolonged straining. Medical therapy for this disease process is not helpful and patients will require a surgical procedure. The two best surgical procedures for the correction of rectal prolapse are low anterior resection of the rectosigmoid and proctopexy. A few patients who are unfit for laparotomy may require the Thiersch Wire procedure. Two unresolved problems after surgical therapy are continuing constipation a

Sixteen senile geriatric inpatients were tested for visual affect recognition under four conditions. In the first three conditions, they were presented with different sets of happy, sad and angry facial stimuli. In the fourth condition, postural sketches were used to express the three emotions. The subjects were tested by means of verbal prompting, i.e., they were directed to point to either the happy, sad or angry facial and bodily expressions over a series of trials. Significantly more errors were made to the angry expressions than to the happy and sad ones which, in turn, did not differ fro

A survey of 390 patients aged over 65 with fractured femurs showed that nearly all the fractures that had been caused by nocturnal falls had occurred among the many patients who were still taking barbiturate hypnotics. Barbiturates were also strongly associated with a history of frequent falls. Barbiturates are still prescribed surprisingly often for the elderly. An analysis of 1622 elderly patients referred to a geriatric clinic in Nottingham showed that 41% were taking barbiturates in 1973. By 1976 this fugure had actually increased to 51%, despite the substantial campaign against barbiturat

The pathology of the heart was studied in 60 patients dying in their tenth decade in a general hospital. The severity of coronary atherosclerosis and the incidence of ischaemic heart disease was lower than in younger geriatric patients. The incidence of minor ;aging' changes was similar to that in younger patients with the exception of mitral valve atheroma where the increase with aging continued into the tenth decade. Marked nodular thickening of the tricuspid valve was seen only in males. Over half the systolic murmurs heard were associated with mitral valve abnormalities and not with aortic

Thousands of organizations across the United States are implementing the 4Ms (What Matters, Medication, Mentation, and Mobility) framework to improve care for older adults but are making different decisions about how they approach such implementation. This variation makes it difficult to compare progress and generate cohesive evidence about enablers of progress and impact on outcomes. The authors developed a 4Ms implementation maturity framework and associated survey instrument to capture real-world data on 4Ms implementation progress. The authors then conducted a pilot administration of the s

Older adults represent a growing proportion of people with diabetes and often experience hypoglycemia, glycemic variability (GV), multimorbidity, frailty, and treatment-related vulnerabilities that are not fully captured by glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) alone. Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) provides time-resolved glucose profiles, trend information, alerts, and remote data sharing, making it well suited to safety-focused geriatric diabetes care.In this narrative review, we synthesize evidence on CGM features, randomized and real-world outcomes, patient and caregiver experience, barriers

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is highly prevalent among older adults and often requires multidrug therapy to optimize glycemic control while minimizing adverse effects. Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) are among the most effective antihyperglycemic drugs with demonstrated cardiometabolic benefits. However, their real-world safety, tolerability, and long-term outcomes in geriatric populations remain under-explored.
OBJECTIVE: To qualitatively analyze completed Phase 4 interventional trials evaluating GLP-1 RA therapy among older adults (≥65 years) with diabetes, as

BACKGROUND: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative condition in older adults and is associated with substantial impairment in quality of life. In geriatric populations, brief, and reliable disease-specific instruments are particularly important for reducing cognitive and physical burden during assessment. This study aimed to adapt the Parkinson’s Disease Quality of Life-7 (PDQoL-7) into Turkish and to evaluate its validity and reliability in older adults with PD. METHODS: This methodological study included 129 individuals aged 65–90 years with PD who attended a neurology outpat

INTRODUCTION: Early detection of neurocognitive disorders is crucial for timely intervention in older adults. The Six-Item Cognitive Impairment Test (6-CIT) is a brief screening tool designed for rapid cognitive assessment, but a validated Persian version has not been available to date. This study aimed to translate, culturally adapt, and psychometrically evaluate the Persian version of the 6-CIT among Iranian older adults.
METHODS: In this prospective cross-sectional psychometric validation and diagnostic accuracy study, 180 participants aged ≥ 60 years were recruited from outpatient geriatr

OBJECTIVE: Research on SLCO1B1 polymorphisms and statin therapy in elderly patients is limited and controversial. This study explored the association of SLCO1B1 c.521T>C and c.388A>G variants with coronary heart disease (CHD) risk, and evaluated the lipid-lowering efficacy and safety of standard-dose statins in subjects aged >75 years to provide evidence for geriatric clinical statin use.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study analyzed 6,146 individuals who were genotyped SLCO1B1 variants c.521T>C and c.388A>G. 2318 participants were selected to evaluate the prevalence of diseases. 118 subject

BACKGROUND: Thailand is undergoing a rapid demographic transition toward an aging society, with substantial challenges in ensuring health equity for older adults. While national-level health policies have expanded coverage and services, spatial disparities in health risks and local development remain underexplored, particularly through integrative spatial frameworks. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the spatial distribution of health vulnerability across Thai provinces and its spatial association with local development. METHODS: Data were obtained from the 2024 nationwide community-based

OBJECTIVES: This manuscript summarizes an international framework for staging and grading in gerodontology and introduces its clinical, research, and policy relevance.
METHODS: The framework was developed through an international consensus process. A steering committee initially scoped existing concepts and then commissioned systematic reviews addressing major oral, systemic, functional, nutritional, and social determinants of oral health in older adults. The reviews informed a 2.5-day consensus conference in Geneva in August 2025 involving stakeholders (clinicians, academics, researchers, po

Background: Older adults with cancer represent a heterogeneous population with varying levels of frailty and multidimensional vulnerability. Rapid screening tools are needed to identify patients who may benefit from comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA). This study aimed to translate and culturally adapt the Brief Multidimensional Prognostic Index (BRIEF-MPI) into Turkish and evaluate its performance in older adults with cancer. Methods: This cross-sectional methodological study included 177 patients aged ≥65 years with solid malignancies. The BRIEF-MPI was translated and culturally adapted

Despite the benefits of resistance training in mitigating sarcopenia, adherence among frail older adults is often limited by osteoarticular pain, comorbidities, and logistical barriers. Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy has emerged as a potential alternative. However, evidence regarding its effects on functional and psychological parameters remains scarce. Objectives: To assess the effects of 12 PEMF therapy sessions on knee extensor strength and functional performance (Timed Up and Go test-TUG) in older adults with sarcopenia. Secondary outcomes included changes in calf circumferenc

SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: As old age affects postoperative outcomes, intraoperative management of geriatric patients should be well established. However, little evidence is available for optimization of fluid therapy during surgery in older patients.
OBJECTIVE: To identify the effects of intraoperative fluid management on postoperative complications and one-year morbidity among older patients undergoing spinal surgery.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included patients aged 70 years or older who underwent spine surgery at the Department of Spine and Neur
