Recommendations of the Mexican College of Rheumatology for the management of psoriatic arthritis.

UNLABELLED: Psoriatic arthritis is a chronic systemic inflammatory disease that affects the skin, musculoskeletal structures and other organs and systems compromising functionality, quality of life and reducing the life expectancy of patients. It is a complex disease that requires specialist and timely care and management. The alternatives for treating the manifestations of psoriatic arthritis have increased and the effect of the different agents on specific manifestations has been clarified in recent studies. Therefore, we should incorporate the available evidence to build a strategy for the

"I couldn't buy the items so I didn't go to deliver at the health facility" Home delivery among rural women in northern Ghana: A mixed-method analysis.

BACKGROUND: Maternal mortality remains a major challenge to health systems in low and middle-incoming countries. Some pregnant women develop potentially life-threatening complications during childbirth. Therefore, home delivery is a precursor for maternal mortality. In this study, we aimed at not only estimating the percentage of deliveries occurring at home and examining the factors associated with home delivery, but we also explored the reasons for home delivery among women in rural Ghana. METHODS: The study was conducted among mothers with delivery experience in selected communities in the

Drinking water quality in areas impacted by oil activities in Ecuador: Associated health risks and social perception of human exposure.

The unregulated oil exploitation in the Northern Ecuadorian Amazon Region (NEAR), mainly from 1964 to the 90's, led to toxic compounds largely released into the environment. A large majority of people living in the Amazon region have no access to drinking water distribution systems and collects water from rain, wells or small streams. The concentrations of major ions, trace elements, PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) and BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes) were analyzed in different water sources to evaluate the impacts of oil extraction and refining. Samples were taken from t

SHRINE: enabling nationally scalable multi-site disease studies.

Results of medical research studies are often contradictory or cannot be reproduced. One reason is that there may not be enough patient subjects available for observation for a long enough time period. Another reason is that patient populations may vary considerably with respect to geographic and demographic boundaries thus limiting how broadly the results apply. Even when similar patient populations are pooled together from multiple locations, differences in medical treatment and record systems can limit which outcome measures can be commonly analyzed. In total, these differences in medical r

Radiation transport modeling and assessment to better predict radiation exposure, dose, and toxicological effects to human organs on long duration space flights.

NASA is very interested in improving its ability to monitor and forecast the radiation levels that pose a health risk to space-walking astronauts as they construct the International Space Station and astronauts that will participate in long-term and deep-space missions. Human exploratory missions to the moon and Mars within the next quarter century, will expose crews to transient radiation from solar particle events which include high-energy galactic cosmic rays and high-energy protons. Because the radiation levels in space are high and solar activity is presently unpredictable, adequate shiel

Prevention of childhood disability in the People's Republic of China.

With a dramatic decrease in infant mortality, an emerging challenge facing modern medicine in China is chronic disabling conditions in infants and young children. According to the results of a national sampling survey in 1987, it is estimated that there are over 51 million people of all ages with disabilities, which accounts for 4.9% of the total population. One out every five families in China has a member who is disabled. For children under 14 years of age, the overall prevalence rate of disability is 2.66%. The prevalence rate of mental retardation is 1.8% which accounts for 66% of all disa

Bone-derived factors mediate crosstalk between skeletal and extra-skeletal organs.

Bone has long been acknowledged as a fundamental structural entity that provides support and protection to the body's organs. However, emerging research indicates that bone plays a crucial role in the regulation of systemic metabolism. This is achieved through the secretion of a variety of hormones, cytokines, metal ions, extracellular vesicles, and other proteins/peptides, collectively referred to as bone-derived factors (BDFs). BDFs act as a medium through which bones can exert targeted regulatory functions upon various organs, thereby underscoring the profound and concrete implications of b

Quality in orthopaedic surgery--an international perspective: AOA critical issues.

Quality is a hallmark of health care, although it is difficult to come to a consensus on who gets to define what "quality health care" is. Most health-care workers enter this field with the goal of improving the health of their patients (and the community), and while everyone tries to do the best job possible, we must continuously seek better methods and techniques for achieving better outcomes. The passion for continuous improvement is fundamental, but passion is not sufficient by itself. There is substantial opportunity to improve quality and reduce cost in health care. Women's Perceptions of Novel 3-D Printed Vaginal Rings for Multipurpose Prevention.

Intravaginal rings (IVRs) can be efficacious, user-controlled devices to prevent pregnancy and HIV. Understanding potential user preferences for device characteristics can promote device uptake and use by informing design optimization. We elicited sensory perceptions from a convenience sample of women aged 18-45 years from a large statewide health system to iteratively inform design of a novel 3D-printed multipurpose (contraception and HIV prevention) technology IVRs. We assessed reactions to varying IVR designs and colors in nine virtual focus groups. We modified designs and assessed percepti

Unravelling the Complexities of Bite Force Determinants in Paediatric Patients: A Literature Review.

The amount of maximum voluntary bite force (MVBF) is determined by the combined action of the jaw elevator muscles, which are altered jaw biomechanics and reflex processes. Bite force (BF) measurements can yield valuable information on the activity and function of the jaw muscles. The accuracy of biting force measurements depends on several variables, including age, gender, malocclusion, dental caries, dental prostheses and temporomandibular joint (TMJ). This information is essential for evaluating the development and function of the masticatory system, identifying potential abnormalities or i

Perspectives of Veterans Affairs mental health providers on working with older adults with dementia and their caregivers.

Continuing education directed at building providers' skills and knowledge in geriatrics represents a practical approach to addressing the geriatric mental health (MH) care workforce shortage. To inform the development of professional training curricula, we surveyed MH providers (N = 65) at a Veterans Affairs medical center on working with older persons with dementia (PwD) and informal caregivers. Providers rated service provision to PwD and caregivers as highly important but endorsed modest self-efficacy. Half of respondents were minimally confident in managing risk of harm to self or others i

Four New Patient-Reported Outcome Measures Examining Health-Seeking Behavior in Persons With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (REDD-CAT): Instrument Development Study.

BACKGROUND: The management of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) includes mastery of complex care activities, self-management skills, and routine health care encounters to optimize glucose control and achieve good health. Given the lifelong course of T2DM, patients are faced with navigating complex medical and disease-specific information. This health-seeking behavior is a driver of health disparities and is associated with hospitalization and readmission. Given that health-seeking behavior is a potentially intervenable social determinant of health, a better understanding of how people navigate t
