Study of mitochondrial DNA A1555G and C1494T mutations in a large cohort of women individuals.

Mammalian mitochondrial A1555G and C1494T mutations are the most common causes of aminoglycoside-induced and non-syndromic hearing loss. However, these two mutations always are studied in the subject of pedigrees analysis. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the genetic characteristic of the A1555G and C1494T mutations on the population-level sampling, and to study the A1555G pattern of maternal transmission in three heteroplasmic families. Four thousand two hundred and ten unrelated women with normal hearing were enrolled as subjects. We used a mutation detection kit to screen the p

Speech and language characteristics in individuals with nonsyndromic submucous cleft palate-A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Up to 80% of individuals with unrepaired submucous cleft palate (SMCP) experience speech difficulties secondary to velopharyngeal insufficiency. Language delays are reported in the broader cleft lip and/or palate population, suggesting that individuals with SMCP may also be at risk. However, contemporary understanding of this population remains limited as there has been no systematic examination of the literature. This review aims to systematically review and document the speech and language characteristics of individuals with nonsyndromic SMCP and, in addition, to identify factors

Biosensor-based selective detection of Zika virus specific antibodies in infected individuals.

Zika virus (ZIKV) recently emerged as a global threat subsequent to its global spread because it induces microencephaly and other brain damages in infants born to infected mothers. Epidemiological monitoring of infection has been hampered by the absence of reliable serological tests capable to distinguish between ZIKV and other Flavivirus infections, in particular Dengue virus (DENV). As both viruses are transmitted by the same mosquito-species, their distributions largely overlap and reliable serological distinction between the viruses is essential. Here we develop a novel biosensor which is

Optimizing text for an individual's visual system: The contribution of visual crowding to reading difficulties.

Reading is a complex process that involves low-level visual processing, phonological processing, and higher-level semantic processing. Given that skilled reading requires integrating information among these different systems, it is likely that reading difficulty-known as dyslexia-can emerge from impairments at any stage of the reading circuitry. To understand contributing factors to reading difficulties within individuals, it is necessary to diagnose the function of each component of the reading circuitry. Here, we investigated whether adults with dyslexia who have impairments in visual proces

Coping styles in individuals at ultra-high risk for psychosis: Associations with cognitive appraisals.

Maladaptive coping may play an important role in the manifestation of symptoms, functioning, and overt psychosis onset in individuals at ultra-high risk (UHR) for psychosis. To determine the factors associated with coping strategies, the relationships between cognitive appraisals and coping styles were investigated in UHR individuals. Sixty-five UHR individuals and 83 healthy controls were assessed for coping styles and cognitive appraisals of attribution bias as a primary appraisal and self-efficacy and perceived social support as a secondary appraisal. UHR participants relied more on a passi

Inhibition and Updating, but Not Switching, Predict Developmental Dyslexia and Individual Variation in Reading Ability.

To elucidate the core executive function profile (strengths and weaknesses in inhibition, updating, and switching) associated with dyslexia, this study explored executive function in 27 children with dyslexia and 29 age matched controls using sensitive z-mean measures of each ability and controlled for individual differences in processing speed. This study found that developmental dyslexia is associated with inhibition and updating, but not switching impairments, at the error z-mean composite level, whilst controlling for processing speed. Inhibition and updating (but not switching) error comp

Patient-derived xenograft mouse models: A high fidelity tool for individualized medicine.

Patient-derived xenograft (PDX) mouse models involve the direct transfer of fresh human tumor samples into immunodeficient mice following surgical resection or other medical operations. Gene expression in tumors may be maintained by serial passages of tumors from mouse to mouse. These models aid research into tumor biology and pharmacology without manual manipulation of cell cultures in vitro. and are widely used in individualized cancer therapy/translational medicine, drug development and coclinical trials. PDX models exhibit higher predictive values for clinical outcomes than cell line-deriv

Experiences, attitudes, and perceptions of caregivers of individuals with treatment-resistant schizophrenia: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS) affects about one-third of individuals with schizophrenia. People with TRS do not experience sustained symptom relief and at the same time have the most severe disease-related disability and associated costs among individuals with severe mental disorders. Like caregivers of people with treatment-responsive schizophrenia, caregivers of individuals with TRS experience the disease burden along with their care recipients; however, for those providing care for individuals with TRS, the stress of the burden is unrelenting due to uncontrolled sympto

The medieval Persian manuscript of Afyunieh: the first individual treatise on the opium and addiction in history.

According to historical evidence, the abuse of opium has been reported all over the globe-specifically throughout Eastern nations-since the sixteenth century. Before that, opium had mostly been applied as medication. Reference has been made in traditional Persian medical literature to the method of cultivation, properties, side effects and toxicity. In sixteenth century Iran, during the reign of the Safavids, opium abuse began. It was from then that prominent Persian scholars started to think of solutions to this societal problem. One of the most famous scholars was Imad al-Din Mahmud ibn Mas'

A Methodology for Individual-Specific Modeling of Rat Optic Nerve Head Biomechanics in Glaucoma.

Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness and involves the death of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). Although biomechanics likely contributes to axonal injury within the optic nerve head (ONH), leading to RGC death, the pathways by which this occurs are not well understood. While rat models of glaucoma are well-suited for mechanistic studies, the anatomy of the rat ONH is different from the human, and the resulting differences in biomechanics have not been characterized. The aim of this study is to describe a methodology for building individual-specific finite element (FE) models o
