Diagnosis of the acute sigmoid volvulus is made by opacification of the colon by water-soluble chemicals. Therapeutic attitude is oriented by the results of an emergency colonoscopy. An emergency laparotomy is indicated when the mucosae presents an ischemic or necrotic aspect; a resection without anastomosis is performed according to Bouilly-Volkman's intervention in the best cases, Hartman's one in others. This paper describes a primary extraskeletal osteogenic sarcoma arising in the spleen of an 11-year-old, male, cross-bred Terrier. Initial diagnosis was made after surgical removal of a splenic mass, at which time the liver and other abdominal viscera appeared grossly normal. Primary peritonitis, or spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, is a highly morbid and often fatal complication of cirrhosis and other conditions associated with ascites. A case of malignant somatostatinoma is reported in a patient with long-standing dermatitis herpetiformis and coeliac disease. The patient had non-specific abdominal pain of several years duration and came to attention because of weight loss despite strict adherence to a gluten-free diet. We have devised a two-stage operation for poor-risk patients with carcinoma of the thoracic esophagus. The first-stage operation consists of a right thoracotomy, subtotal esophagectomy, and lymph node dissection. A persistent urachal remnant causing small intestinal strangulation was found on exploratory laparotomy in a 2-year-old cow with colic. The persistent urachus consisted of a thin cord-like band that was attached ventrally to the umbilical region and caudally to the apex of the bladder. Three hundred sixty-nine patients with cancer of the esophagus (280) and of the cardia (89) underwent laparoscopy, which revealed single or multiple metastases to the liver, peritoneum, omentum, stomach, and lymph nodes in 52 patients (14%) and a metastasis to the gastric wall or to the regional lymph nodes in 36 patients (9.7%). A 63 year old man was followed up for chronic pancreatitis. After 2 years, he developed features of primary sclerosing cholangitis associated with Sjögren's syndrome. A review of the literature revealed 38 previous cases of chronic pancreatitis associated with sclerosing cholangitis; a sicca complex was also demonstrated in 3 of these cases. Chronic pancreatitis is mostly asymptomatic and the diagnosis is usually made at laparotomy or postmortem. A report is presented on the prenatal development of a solitary hepatic cyst in a fetus of the 39th week of pregnancy. Sonography revealed that nearly the entire abdomen was filled by a cyst that caused displacement of the stomach and intestine as well as elevation of the diaphragm. This is a new case report of a primary abdominal pregnancy with a full-term live baby in a 26 yr old women. The diagnosis was only made at laparotomy. The premature placental separation was followed by massive haemorrhage. Atresia and hypoplasia of the bile ducts are the most common congenital biliary anomalies of clinical importance. Surgical correction can help about 10% of these infants.
