Bronchoscopic endobronchial valves.

Bronchoscopic endobronchial valves (EBVs) have emerged as a minimally invasive alternative to surgical lung volume reduction for patients with severe emphysema. Emphysema, a progressive lung disease associated with COPD, leads to hyperinflation of the affected lung and reduces respiratory efficiency. EBVs function by limiting airflow to diseased lung segments, causing atelectasis of the emphysematous lung, and allowing healthier lung regions to expand, thereby improving overall pulmonary function. Two primary EBV systems, Zephyr and Spiration valves, have demonstrated efficacy in clinical tria

[General aspects of dementia disorders].

The prevalence of dementia increases with age. In rare cases, people younger than 65 years old are also affected, with substantial consequences for the professional life. The symptoms depend on the form of dementia and can vary individually. Impairment of short-term memory is not always in the foreground and other neurocognitive domains, such as the disturbance of executive functions can have a significant impact on the ability to cope with everyday life. Pathophysiologically, neurodegenerative dementias with the major forms of Alzheimer's dementia, Lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal demen

Report from the CDC. Vaccines in women.

Women's healthcare providers are encouraged to incorporate immunizations into their clients' care. Because women often rely on their healthcare provider for primary and preventive care, that provider may dramatically improve clients' quality of life by decreasing the risk of vaccine-preventable diseases. Women often assume responsibility for the entire family's health, and educating women can prevent disease in the household. Women's healthcare providers should offer and promote these vaccines: hepatitis B, varicella, measles/mumps/rubella, and combined tetanus/diphtheria toxoids for adolescen

Learnings from a hybrid communities of practice group therapy model to support psilocybin-assisted therapy for patients with a terminal diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Psilocybin-assisted therapy is continuing to show significant positive effects for palliative cancer patients, both in reducing symptoms and improving one's sense of hope and meaning. Most research has focused on individual therapy models, limiting access and overlooking potential community-based benefits. METHODS: This qualitative study describes the results of patients experiencing distress related to a terminal health condition who enrolled in six to eight once-weekly group resilience-based community of practice (CoP) sessions combined with one psilocybin-assisted therapy (PaT)

Psychological distress among family caregivers of persons with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) present growing global health challenges, especially in aging populations, such as Uganda. In Uganda, familial caregiving, predominantly undertaken by female relatives, is the primary form of support provided to patients with ADRD. Cultural stigma around dementia and limited access to support services amplify caregivers' challenges. This study examined psychological distress, depression, and quality of life (QoL) among family caregivers of patients with ADRD in Wakiso District, Uganda. METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved 90

Perspectives on oral health integration into HIV care and research in low-resource settings: insights from patients and key stakeholders in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Oral health conditions are common among people living with HIV (PLHIV), yet many have unmet needs for oral health care. In most low-income countries like Uganda, oral health is not yet integrated into HIV care settings. We explore stakeholder's perspectives on oral health integration in HIV care and research settings in Uganda. METHODS: We conducted four focus group discussions (FGDs) among people living with HIV (PLHIV) and eighteen (18) semi-structured interviews among key stakeholders including policy makers, educators and practitioners in fields of HIV and oral health. Functioning of chronically ill patients receiving long-term care in Poland.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic diseases and disabilities require the implementation of multidimensional supportive measures - medical, social, and organizational. In Poland, home care plays a key role, enabling individuals with chronic illnesses to remain in their natural environment, which improves quality of life, independence, and social interaction. AIM: The aim of the study is to characterize the functioning of individuals with chronic diseases in the context of long-term care and to analyze selected determinants of this functioning. This assessment is important, as it enables the identification

Genetics Navigator: protocol for a mixed methods randomized controlled trial evaluating a digital platform to deliver genomic services in Canadian pediatric and adult populations.

INTRODUCTION: Genetic testing is used across medical disciplines leading to unprecedented demand for genetic services. This has resulted in excessive waitlists and unsustainable pressure on the standard model of genetic healthcare. Alternative models are needed; e-health tools represent scalable and evidence-based solution. We aim to evaluate the effectiveness of the Genetics Navigator, an interactive patient-centred digital platform that supports the collection of medical and family history, provision of pregenetic and postgenetic counselling and return of genetic testing results across paedi

Conceptualising trauma in eating disorders: a reflexive commentary on the role of neglect, iatrogenic harm, and epistemic injury.

While links between eating disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder are well established, dominant frameworks have tended to locate trauma primarily outside healthcare, offering limited tools for understanding how neglect, exclusion, coercive practices, and epistemic misrecognition within care may contribute to ongoing distress. Drawing on empirical research, ethical scholarship, and reflexive lived experience analysis, this Comment paper examines how trauma-related symptoms in eating disorders may arise not only from early life adversity, but also through harmful relationships with health

Oncologist Perspectives on Timely Hospice Referral: A Qualitative Study.

IntroductionLate hospice referral rates are on the rise and are associated with negative outcomes at the end of life (EoL). Rates of late hospice referral vary drastically from oncologist to oncologist, and behavioral and psychological factors among individual oncologists have been identified as potential contributors to this variability. However, there remains a lack of clarity about how these oncologist-specific factors affect hospice referral practices among oncologists.MethodsThe Communication Optimization and Methodology For Improving Oncologist Hospice Referral Timing (COMFORT) study exp

The need for whole-person care in managing community dwelling older stroke survivors.

Stroke remains a leading cause of disability and mortality worldwide, disproportionately affecting older adults. Advances in acute stroke management have reduced mortality but led to a growing population of survivors living with long-term disability. The burden and impact of stroke extend beyond neurological impairment. Physically, older survivors experience functional decline, loss of independence in activities of daily living, and heightened need for environmental or institutional support. Psychologically and socially, stroke survivors face high rates of depression, anxiety, apathy, and fati
