SE-TCN network for continuous estimation of upper limb joint angles.

The maturity of human-computer interaction technology has made it possible to use surface electromyographic signals (sEMG) to control exoskeleton robots and intelligent prostheses. However, the available upper limb rehabilitation robots controlled by sEMG have the shortcoming of inflexible joints. This paper proposes a method based on a temporal convolutional network (TCN) to predict upper limb joint angles by sEMG. The raw TCN depth was expanded to extract the temporal features and save the original information. The timing sequence characteristics of the muscle blocks that dominate the upper

Predictive Power of Cognitive Biomarkers in Neurodegenerative Disease Drug Development: Utility of the P300 Event-Related Potential.

Neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), and their associated deterioration of cognitive function are common causes of disability. The slowly developing pathology of neurodegenerative diseases necessitates early diagnosis and monitored long-term treatment. Lack of effective therapies coupled with an improved rate of early diagnosis in our aging population have created an urgent need for the development of novel drugs, as well as the need for reliable biomarkers for treatment response. These issues are especially relevant for AD, in which the rate of clinical trial drug fai

iACVP: markedly enhanced identification of anti-coronavirus peptides using a dataset-specific word2vec model.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused several million deaths worldwide. Development of anti-coronavirus drugs is thus urgent. Unlike conventional non-peptide drugs, antiviral peptide drugs are highly specific, easy to synthesize and modify, and not highly susceptible to drug resistance. To reduce the time and expense involved in screening thousands of peptides and assaying their antiviral activity, computational predictors for identifying anti-coronavirus peptides (ACVPs) are needed. However, few experimentally verified ACVP samples are available, even though a relatively large number of antiviral pept

Integrated Deep Learning and Supervised Machine Learning Model for Predictive Fetal Monitoring.

Asphyxiation associated with metabolic acidosis is one of the common causes of fetal deaths. The paper aims to develop a feature extraction and prediction algorithm capable of identifying most of the features in the SISPORTO software package and late and variable decelerations. The resulting features were used for classification based on umbilical cord pH data. The algorithms developed here were used to predict cord pH levels. The prediction system assists the obstetricians in assessing the state of the fetus better than the category methods, as only about 30% of the patients in the pathologic

Influence of Umbelliferone on the Anticonvulsant and Neuroprotective Activity of Selected Antiepileptic Drugs: An In Vivo and In Vitro Study.

Umbelliferone (7-hydroxycoumarin; UMB) is a coumarin with many biological properties, including antiepileptic activity. This study evaluated the effect of UMB on the ability of classical and novel antiepileptic drugs (e.g., lacosamide (LCM), levetiracetam (LEV), phenobarbital (PB) and valproate (VPA)) to prevent seizures evoked by the 6-Hz corneal-stimulation-induced seizure model. The study also evaluated the influence of this coumarin on the neuroprotective properties of these drugs in two in vitro models of neurodegeneration, including trophic stress and excitotoxicity. The results indicate

An Adequate Supply of Bis(ethylmaltolato)oxidovanadium(IV) Remarkably Reversed the Pathological Hallmarks of Alzheimer's Disease in Triple-Transgenic Middle-Aged Mice.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a complex and progressive neurodegenerative disease with impaired synapse, imbalanced mineral metabolism, protein mis-folding and aggregation. Bis(ethylmaltolato)oxidovanadium(IV) (BEOV), an organic bioactive vanadium compound with low toxicity and high bioavailability, has been studied as therapeutic agent against tuberculosis and diabetes. However, its neuroprotective effects have rarely been reported. Therefore, in this study, the potential application of BEOV in intervening AD cognitive dysfunction and neuropathology was evaluated. Both low- and high-dose of BEO

Estimating Respiratory Rate From Breath Audio Obtained Through Wearable Microphones.

Respiratory rate (RR) is a clinical metric used to assess overall health and physical fitness. An individual's RR can change from their baseline due to chronic illness symptoms (e.g., asthma, congestive heart failure), acute illness (e.g., breathlessness due to infection), and over the course of the day due to physical exhaustion during heightened exertion. Remote estimation of RR can offer a cost-effective method to track disease progression and cardio-respiratory fitness over time. This work investigates a model-driven approach to estimate RR from short audio segments obtained after physical

Cerebral blood flow and cognitive outcome after pediatric stroke in the middle cerebral artery.

Adaptive recovery of cerebral perfusion after pediatric arterial ischemic stroke (AIS) is sought to be crucial for sustainable rehabilitation of cognitive functions. We therefore examined cerebral blood flow (CBF) in the chronic stage after stroke and its association with cognitive outcome in patients after pediatric AIS. This cross-sectional study investigated CBF and cognitive functions in 14 patients (age 13.5 ± 4.4 years) after pediatric AIS in the middle cerebral artery (time since AIS was at least 2 years prior to assessment) when compared with 36 healthy controls (aged 13.8 ± 4.3 years)

Asparagine endopeptidase deletion ameliorates cognitive impairments by inhibiting proinflammatory microglial activation in MPTP mouse model of Parkinson disease.

In addition to motor dysfunction, cognitive impairments have been reported to occur in patients with early-stage Parkinson's disease (PD). In this study, we examined a PD mouse model induced by 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP). This treatment led to the degeneration of nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurons in mice, a phenomenon that is consistent with previous studies. Besides, spatial memory and object recognition of MPTP-treated mice were impaired, as denoted by the Morris water maze (MWM) and novel object recognition (NOR) tests, respectively. Moreover, hippocampal synaptic

Wise Information Technology of Med: Human Pose Recognition in Elderly Care.

The growing problem of aging has led to a social concern on how to take care of the elderly living alone. Many traditional methods based on visual cameras have been used in elder monitoring. However, these methods are difficult to be applied in daily life, limited by high storage space with the camera, low-speed information processing, sensitivity to lighting, the blind area in vision, and the possibility of revealing privacy. Therefore, wise information technology of the Med System based on the micro-Doppler effect and Ultra Wide Band (UWB) radar for human pose recognition in the elderly livi

Cognitive determinants of community functioning and quality of life in homeless adults with mental illness: 6-year follow-up from the At Home/Chez Soi Study Toronto site.

BACKGROUND: High rates of physical and mental health comorbidities are associated with functional impairment among persons who are homeless. Cognitive dysfunction is common, but how it contributes to various functional outcomes in this population has not been well investigated. This study examines how cognition covaries with community functioning and subjective quality of life over a 6-year period while accounting for the effects of risk and protective factors. METHODS: Participants were 349 homeless adults (mean age = 39.8) recruited from the Toronto site of the At Home/Chez Soi study, a lar

Abnormal Activity Recognition from Surveillance Videos Using Convolutional Neural Network.

UNLABELLED: Background and motivation: Every year, millions of Muslims worldwide come to Mecca to perform the Hajj. In order to maintain the security of the pilgrims, the Saudi government has installed about 5000 closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras to monitor crowd activity efficiently. PROBLEM: As a result, these cameras generate an enormous amount of visual data through manual or offline monitoring, requiring numerous human resources for efficient tracking. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop an intelligent and automatic system in order to efficiently monitor crowds and ident

Feasibility of a Neural Network-Based Virtual Sensor for Vehicle Unsprung Mass Relative Velocity Estimation.

With the automotive industry moving towards automated driving, sensing is increasingly important in enabling technology. The virtual sensors allow data fusion from various vehicle sensors and provide a prediction for measurement that is hard or too expensive to measure in another way or in the case of demand on continuous detection. In this paper, virtual sensing is discussed for the case of vehicle suspension control, where information about the relative velocity of the unsprung mass for each vehicle corner is required. The corresponding goal can be identified as a regression task with multi-

Long-term anticholinergic, benzodiazepine and Z-drug use in community-dwelling older adults: What is the impact on cognitive and neuropsychological performance?

BACKGROUND: Long-term use of anticholinergics, benzodiazepines and related drugs (or "Z-drugs") have been associated with cognitive impairment and dementia. However, the relationship of these medications with cognitive function and domain-specific neuropsychological performance in older adults without dementia, is unclear. METHODS: 5135 older adults (74.0 ± 8.3 years; 67.4% female) without a diagnosis of dementia were recruited in Ireland to the Trinity-Ulster-Department of Agriculture (TUDA) study. Detailed cognitive and neuropsychological assessment was conducted using the Mini-Mental State

Chronic modafinil therapy ameliorates depressive-like behavior, spatial memory and hippocampal plasticity impairments, and sleep-wake changes in a surgical mouse model of menopause.

Depression, cognitive deficits, and sleep disturbances are common and often severe in menopausal women. Hormone replacement cannot effectively alleviate these symptoms and sometimes elicits life-threatening adverse reactions. Exploring effective therapies to target psychological problems is urgently needed. In this work, we developed a mouse model of menopause by bilateral ovariectomies (OVXs) and investigated whether menopausal mental symptoms can be ameliorated by psychostimulant modafinil (MOD) as well as explored the underlying mechanisms. At ~3 weeks after OVXs, mice got daily intraperito
