Correlates of trabecular and cortical volumetric bone mineral density of the radius and tibia in older men: the Osteoporotic Fractures in Men Study.

Quantitative computed tomography (QCT) can estimate volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) and distinguish trabecular from cortical bone. Few comprehensive studies have examined correlates of vBMD in older men. This study evaluated the impact of demographic, anthropometric, lifestyle, and medical factors on vBMD in 1172 men aged 69 to 97 years and enrolled in the Osteoporotic Fractures in Men Study (MrOS). Peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) was used to measure vBMD of the radius and tibia. The multivariable linear regression models explained up to 10% of the variance in trabecu

The Diesel Exhaust in Miners Study: IV. Estimating historical exposures to diesel exhaust in underground non-metal mining facilities.

We developed quantitative estimates of historical exposures to respirable elemental carbon (REC) for an epidemiologic study of mortality, including lung cancer, among diesel-exposed miners at eight non-metal mining facilities [the Diesel Exhaust in Miners Study (DEMS)]. Because there were no historical measurements of diesel exhaust (DE), historical REC (a component of DE) levels were estimated based on REC data from monitoring surveys conducted in 1998-2001 as part of the DEMS investigation. These values were adjusted for underground workers by carbon monoxide (CO) concentration trends in the

Root-specific reduction of cytokinin causes enhanced root growth, drought tolerance, and leaf mineral enrichment in Arabidopsis and tobacco.

Optimizing root system architecture can overcome yield limitations in crop plants caused by water or nutrient shortages. Classic breeding approaches are difficult because the trait is governed by many genes and is difficult to score. We generated transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana and tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) plants with enhanced root-specific degradation of the hormone cytokinin, a negative regulator of root growth. These transgenic plants form a larger root system, whereas growth and development of the shoot are similar. Elongation of the primary root, root branching, and root biomass format

Cadmium induced renal dysfunction among residents of rice farming area downstream from a zinc-mineralized belt in Thailand.

High levels of cadmium (Cd) in paddy soil and rice, and a concurrent increase in urinary Cd of inhabitants in the Mae Sot District, Tak Province, Thailand first emerged in 2003. Risk factors such as occupation, sources of staple food and drinking water as well as biomarkers of adverse renal effects of the increased body burden of Cd were investigated in 795 residents, 30 years or older, whose urinary Cd levels were between 0.02 and 106mug/g creatinine. Farmers who consumed their own rice and residents who sourced drinking water from wells and/or the river demonstrated increased urinary Cd. Age

Chronic kidney disease bone and mineral disorder (CKD-MBD) in apolipoprotein E-deficient mice with chronic renal failure.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with disorders of mineral and bone metabolism (MBD) which include renal osteodystrophy and vascular calcifications. This is of clinical concern because the high risk of cardiovascular (CVD) complications observed in uremic patients may be linked with bone disease. In this context, our aim was to characterize the bone lesions in CKD-apolipoprotein E-deficient mice (apoE(-/-)) and analyze their relationships with the vascular calcifications which these animals develop rapidly in this model. With ApoE being also involved in bone metabolism, w

Loss of skeletal mineralization by the simultaneous ablation of PHOSPHO1 and alkaline phosphatase function: a unified model of the mechanisms of initiation of skeletal calcification.

Endochondral ossification is a carefully orchestrated process mediated by promoters and inhibitors of mineralization. Phosphatases are implicated, but their identities and functions remain unclear. Alkaline phosphatase (TNAP) plays a crucial role promoting mineralization of the extracellular matrix by restricting the concentration of the calcification inhibitor inorganic pyrophosphate (PP(i)). Mutations in the TNAP gene cause hypophosphatasia, a heritable form of rickets and osteomalacia. Here we show that PHOSPHO1, a phosphatase with specificity for phosphoethanolamine and phosphocholine, pla

Preferential reduction of bone mineral density at the femur reflects impairment of physical activity in patients with low-activity rheumatoid arthritis.

Bone mineral density (BMD) and factors influencing BMD in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) under good or moderate control were examined to assess management of osteoporosis in RA. BMD of the lumbar spine, femur, and distal radius was measured in 105 female patients with well-controlled RA. Laboratory and clinical variables associated with disease activity were measured in the same subjects, and correlations between these variables and BMD were evaluated. The RA patients showed a greater decrease in BMD of the femoral neck than of the lumbar spine. Age, Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) score, and

Relation of plasma total homocysteine, folate and vitamin B12 levels to bone mineral density in Moroccan healthy postmenopausal women.

To test whether in Moroccan healthy postmenopausal women, levels of plasma total homocysteine (tHcy), folate, and vitamin B12 are related to BMD. A total of 188 volunteer postmenopausal women were recruited from our blood taking center between April 2008 and December 2008. Each subject completed a standardized questionnaire designed to document putative risk factors of osteoporosis. Bone mineral density was determined by a Lunar Prodigy Vision DXA system, and blood samples for plasma tHcy, folate, vitamin B12, and serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) were taken. Comparison between women with osteop

Relationship between bone mineral density and clinical features in patients with inflammatory bowel disease: a local study in Turkish population.

This study aimed to compare the bone mineral density (BMD) of patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) in order to determine the possible risk factors for bone loss. A total of 142 patients with UC (n = 88) and CD (n = 54) participated in the study. They were assessed for gender, body mass index (BMI), disease duration and activity, intestinal site of involvement, history of bowel resection, use of steroids, and extra-intestinal findings and complications. The BMD was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. There were no differences in BMD between UC and CD patients

Potential Role of Dentin Sialoprotein by Inducing Dental Pulp Mesenchymal Stem Cell Differentiation and Mineralization for Dental Tissue Repair.

INTRODUCTION: Dentin sialoprotein (DSP) is a dentin extracellular matrix protein, a unique marker of dentinogenesis and plays a vital role in odontoblast differentiation and dentin mineralization. Recently, studies have shown that DSP induces differentiation and mineralization of periodontal ligament stem cells and dental papilla mesenchymal cells in vitro and rescues dentin deficiency and increases enamel mineralization in animal models. THE HYPOTHESIS: DSP as a nature therapeutic agent stimulates dental tissue repair by inducing endogenous dental pulp mesenchymal stem/progenitor cells into o

Pulp capping with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA): a retrospective analysis of carious pulp exposures treated by undergraduate dental students.

The current study estimated pulpal vitality after MTA pulp caps were performed by undergraduate student clinicians. At recall after 12 to 27 months, 51 pulp caps were clinically and radiographically assessed. Kaplan-Meier analyses were used to estimate overall success at 12 and 24 months, determined as the presence of a vital pulp, as well as impact of preoperative variables on pulp vitality at recall. Overall, one-year pulp survival was 67.7%, while the two-year survival rate was 56.2%. Tarone-Ware statistics indicated that neither age of the patient nor size of the exposure ("minimal" or "mo

Mesenchymal stem cells and inorganic bovine bone mineral in sinus augmentation: comparison with augmentation by autologous bone in adult sheep.

Our aim was to compare the osteogenic potential of mononuclear cells harvested from the iliac crest combined with bovine bone mineral (BBM) (experimental group) with that of autogenous cancellous bone alone (control group). We studied bilateral augmentations of the sinus floor in 6 adult sheep. BBM and mononuclear cells (MNC) were mixed and placed into one side and autogenous bone in the other side. Animals were killed after 8 and 16 weeks. Sites of augmentation were analysed radiographically and histologically. The mean (SD) augmentation volume was 3.0 (1.0) cm(3) and 2.7 (0.3) cm(3) after 8

The association between high plasma homocysteine levels and lower bone mineral density in Slovak women: the impact of vegetarian diet.

BACKGROUND: A long-term vegetarian diet is generally poor in vitamin B group. The lack of vitamin B(12) together with vitamin B(6) and folate deficiency is closely related to homocysteine metabolism. Hyperhomocysteinemia was found to be associated with increased bone turnover markers and increased fracture risk. Thus, hyperhomocysteinemia, vitamin B(12) and folate deficiency may be regarded as novel risk factors for micronutrient deficiency-related osteoporosis. AIM OF THE STUDY: To assess the possible impact of a vegetarian diet on bone mineral density in cohort of Slovak vegetarian women.

[Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and bone. Management of chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder in peritoneal dialysis patients].

The peritoneal dialysate calcium concentration is an important factor in chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD), because dialysate calcium concentrations strongly influence the serum calcium, phosphate, and parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels and the dosage of phosphate binders/vitamin D analogs. High-calcium dialysate has been used to correct hypocalcemia in end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Subsequently, a low-calcium dialysate was produced to increase the dosage of calcium-containing phosphate binders and vitamin D analogs without causing hypercalcemia. However, not enough is

Beneficial effects of spraying low mineral content thermal spring water after fractional photothermolysis in patients with dermal melasma.

INTRODUCTION: Melasma is a common dermatological skin disease that can now be treated by fractional photothermolysis (fractional resurfacing). Past studies have shown that thermal spring water (TSW) spray can reduce local inflammatory symptoms after dermatological surgery, laser surgery or chemical peelings. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of spraying TSW post-fractional resurfacing treatment in patients with dermal melasma. METHODS: Twenty patients with bilateral dermal melasma were included in this split-face comparative study. Patients were treated by
