Dynamic processes in regulation and some implications for biofeedback and biobehavioral interventions.

Systems theory has long been used in psychology, biology, and sociology. This paper applies newer methods of control systems modeling for assessing system stability in health and disease. Control systems can be characterized as open or closed systems with feedback loops. Feedback produces oscillatory activity, and the complexity of naturally occurring oscillatory patterns reflects the multiplicity of feedback mechanisms, such that many mechanisms operate simultaneously to control the system. Unstable systems, often associated with poor health, are characterized by absence of oscillation, rando

Prenatal Maternal Psychological Distress During the COVID-19 Pandemic and Newborn Brain Development.

IMPORTANCE: Elevated maternal psychological distress during pregnancy is associated with altered fetal brain development. During the COVID-19 pandemic, prenatal maternal psychological distress more than doubled. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of the pandemic and rising maternal psychological distress with brain growth in newborns using quantitative 3-dimensional volumetric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This prospective cross-sectional study recruited mother-infant dyads at Children's National Hospital, Washington, DC, during the COVID-19 pandemic

Animal models with construct validity for studying epigenetic processes in neurobehavior.

Many ethical and technical challenges hinder exploration of molecular mechanisms, including epigenetic processes underlying neuropsychiatric disorders in humans. Therefore, there is a need for animal models for such disorders that will allow a better understanding of disease mechanisms. Here, we explore the use of animal models with construct validity for such disorders. The chapter emphasizes the importance of construct validity of the models and highlights key considerations, including the temporal dynamics of disorders, relevant tissues and brain regions, and the need for genetic and enviro

Challenges in the use of animal models and perspectives for a translational view of stress and psychopathologies.

The neurobiology and development of treatments for stress-related neuropsychiatric disorders rely heavily on animal models. However, the complexity of these disorders makes it difficult to model them entirely, so only specific features of human psychopathology are emulated and these models should be used with great caution. Importantly, the effects of stress depend on multiple factors, like duration, context of exposure, and individual variability. Here we present a review on pre-clinical studies of stress-related disorders, especially those developed to model posttraumatic stress disorder, ma

Selective attention and the "Asynchrony Theory" in native Hebrew-speaking adult dyslexics: Behavioral and ERPs measures.

The main aim of the present study was to determine whether adult dyslexic readers demonstrate the "Asynchrony Theory" (Breznitz [Reading Fluency: Synchronization of Processes, Lawrence Erlbaum and Associates, Mahwah, NJ, USA, 2006]) when selective attention is studied. Event-related potentials (ERPs) and behavioral parameters were collected from nonimpaired readers group and dyslexic readers group performing alphabetic and nonalphabetic tasks. The dyslexic readers group was found to demonstrate asynchrony between the auditory and the visual modalities when it came to processing alphabetic stim

Ovarian hormone fluctuation, neurosteroids, and HPA axis dysregulation in perimenopausal depression: a novel heuristic model.

OBJECTIVE: In this conceptual review, the authors propose a novel mechanistic candidate in the etiology of depression with onset in the menopause transition ("perimenopausal depression") involving alterations in stress-responsive pathways, induced by ovarian hormone fluctuation. METHOD: The relevant literature in perimenopausal depression, including prevalence, predictors, and treatment with estrogen therapy, was reviewed. Subsequently, the growing evidence from animal models and clinical research in other reproductive mood disorders was synthesized to describe a heuristic model of perimenopa

Alternating gender incongruity: a new neuropsychiatric syndrome providing insight into the dynamic plasticity of brain-sex.

Between the two extreme ends of human sexuality - male and female - lie a poorly understood and poorly studied spectrum of ambiguously defined sexual identities that are very much a part of the human condition but defy rigid classification. "Bigender" is a recently formed sub-category of transgenderism, describing individuals who experience a blending or alternation of gender states. While recognized nominally by the APA, no scientific work to our knowledge has addressed this fascinating condition, or proposed any physiological basis for it. In addition, the alternation aspect has not been pro

An interpretative model of early indicators of specific developmental dyslexia in preschool age: a comparative presentation of three studies in Greece.

The detection of specific factors of the developmental dyslexia at an early stage, and the identification of the role of those factors responsible for its manifestation, is a fundamental area of study on dyslexia in the recent literature. The objective of the present study is to clarify that dysfunctions in the following specific domains contribute in a causal model to the occurrence of dyslexia at an early stage: phonological awareness, psychomotor ability (body shape, spatio-temporal orientation, grapho-motor ability and laterality), perception, memory, attention, prereading and prewriting s

Advances in molecular genetics of panic disorder.

The molecular genetic research on panic disorder (PD) has grown tremendously in the past decade. Although the data from twin and family studies suggest an involvement of genetic factors in the familial transmission of PD with the heritability estimate near 40%, the genetic substrate underlying panicogenesis is not yet understood. The linkage studies so far have suggested that chromosomal regions 13q, 14q, 22q, 4q31-q34, and probably 9q31 are associated with the transmission of PD phenotypes. To date, more than 350 candidate genes have been examined in association studies of PD, but most of the

Attraction of flashes to moving dots.

Motion is known to distort visual space, producing illusory mislocalizations for flashed objects. Previously, it has been shown that when a stationary bar is flashed in the proximity of a moving stimulus, the position of the flashed bar appears to be shifted in the direction of nearby motion. A model consisting of predictive projections from the sub-system that processes motion information onto the sub-system that processes position information can explain this illusory position shift of a stationary flashed bar in the direction of motion. Based on this model of motion-position interactions, w

Modelling facets of mania--new directions related to the notion of endophenotypes.

The lack of appropriate animal models is a major limitation in research of bipolar disorder (BPD): at this time there are very few models for this devastating disease. Whereas limited attempts have been made to develop comprehensive models for BPD, the new notion of endophenotypes encourages us to explore the possibility of developing separate models for separate facets of the disorder. Since more models are available for depression, there is a dire need for models for mania that will be relatively easy and simple to induce and test and will therefore be practical for purposes of screening pos

Social neuroscience, empathy, brain integration, and neurodevelopmental disorders.

Paul MacLean has investigated integrated brain functioning through selected brain lesions in animals that disturb circuits necessary for complex behaviors, such as social displays. MacLean is unique in his comparative neurobehavioral approach that emphasizes the evolutionary origins of parenting and social behaviors and the implications of brain changes in the evolution from reptiles (social displays) to mammals (nursing, audiovocal communication, play) to man (self-awareness, intentionality, social context) that link affect and cognition. Subjectively, how "looking with feeling toward others,

A novel rat model of comorbid PTSD and addiction reveals intersections between stress susceptibility and enhanced cocaine seeking with a role for mGlu5 receptors.

PTSD is highly comorbid with cocaine use disorder (CUD), and cocaine users with PTSD + CUD are more resistant to treatment. Here we sought to develop a rat model of PTSD + CUD in order to identify the neurobiological changes underlying such comorbidity and screen potential medications for reducing cocaine seeking in the PTSD population. We utilized a predator scent stress model of PTSD, wherein rats received a single exposure to the fox pheromone 2,5-dihydro-2,4,5-trimethylthiazoline (TMT). One week after TMT exposure, stress-susceptible (susceptible), intermediate, and resilient phenotypes we

The Case for Peer-Support in Addressing the Mental Health Needs of Ukrainian Refugees in Europe.

Since the escalation of the war in Ukraine in February 2022, more than six million Ukrainians have sought refuge across Europe, facing significant psychosocial strain. Disrupted social networks, family separation, economic uncertainty, and barriers to services contribute to elevated levels of anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress, particularly among women and single mothers who constitute the majority of refugees. Despite host countries' efforts to provide protection and basic services, access to mental health care remains limited due to overstretched systems, language barriers, burea

From the reconstruction of meaning to the reconstruction of security: The broaden-and-build cycle of continuing bonds.

This commentary aims to explain the phenomenon of post-loss growth from the perspective of attachment theory by commenting on the article by Malkinson et al. (2026) on post-loss growth. Drawing on Mikulincer and Shaver's broaden-and-build cycle of attachment security, the Broaden-and-Build Cycle of Continuing Bonds is proposed as a conceptual model for understanding the bereavement process. This commentary argues that the meaning reconstruction approach following loss can support not only the reconstruction of meaning but also the restructuring of Internal Working Models regarding the relation

Observation Oriented Modeling: Principles and Tools for Person-Oriented Research.

Observation Oriented Modeling (OOM) is a person-oriented approach to data conceptualization and analysis that departs significantly from traditional methodological and statistical frameworks. Rather than relying on means, variances, and covariances, OOM focuses on the patterns formed by individual observations. Instead of estimating population parameters, OOM prioritizes the development of explanatory theories based on those observed patterns, reflecting a broader philosophical shift from logical positivism toward philosophical realism. In this paper, we illustrate the principles and methods o

[Construction of obesity self-management education and support framework].

Obesity is a chronic metabolic disease requiring long-term intervention and sustained behavioral management. Given the current paucity of systematic education and support standards in obesity care, this paper proposes the obesity self-management education and support (OSMES) framework, modeled on the mature theoretical and practical foundations of diabetes self-management education and support framework. Grounded in the L.I.F.E.care four-dimensional model: load management (L), integration fitness (I), form optimization (F), and equilibrium mindset (E). The framework establishes 6 core standard

When healthy classrooms hurt: how reduced bullying isolates victimized youth through altered friendship and status dynamics.

The healthy context paradox-the phenomenon that victimized youths show poorer adjustment in classrooms with lower levels of bullying-has been documented primarily for psychological outcomes but remains less explored with respect to peer social dynamics. The present study examined whether this pattern is also observable in victims' peer acceptance, and rejection beyond their friendship network. Using sociometric data from 915 Hungarian students (aged 11-18) across 40 classrooms, we estimated multilevel models to test whether classroom-level victimization norms were associated with variation in
