Differential modulation of feedforward inhibition reflects topographic organization in the olfactory system.

The nervous system flexibly processes information under different conditions. To do this, neural networks frequently rely on uniform expression of modulatory receptors by distinct classes of neurons to fine tune the computations supported by each neuronal class. Here, we explore an alternate organization in which one population of neurons in the olfactory system of Drosophila expresses all of the receptors for the modulator serotonin. We find extensive, heterogeneous receptor co-expression by ventral projection neurons (v-PNs), with many receptor combinations present. Despite overlap in glomer

Neural Networks Based on Synthesized Training Data for the Automated Detection of Chemical Plumes in Passive Infrared Multispectral Images.

Automated detection of volatile organic compounds in the atmosphere can be achieved by applying pattern recognition analysis to passive infrared (IR) multispectral remote sensing data. However, obtaining analyte-active training data through field experiments is time-consuming and expensive. To address this issue, methodology has been developed for simulating radiance profiles acquired using a multispectral IR line-scanner mounted in a downward-looking position on a fixed-wing aircraft. The simulation strategy used Planck's radiation law and a radiometric model along with the laboratory spectru

Deep Potential Molecular Dynamics Study of Chapman-Jouguet Detonation Events of Energetic Materials.

Detonation of energetic materials (EMs) is of great importance for military applications, while the understanding of detailed events and mechanisms for the detonation process is scarce. In this study, the first deep neural network potential NNP_Shock for molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of shock-induced detonation of EMs was generated based on a deep potential model, providing DFT accuracy but 106 times the computational efficiency. On this basis, we employ our deep potential to perform MD simulations of shock-induced detonation of high-performance EM material 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8

Sensory integration dynamics in a hierarchical network explains choice probabilities in cortical area MT.

Neuronal variability in sensory cortex predicts perceptual decisions. This relationship, termed choice probability (CP), can arise from sensory variability biasing behaviour and from top-down signals reflecting behaviour. To investigate the interaction of these mechanisms during the decision-making process, we use a hierarchical network model composed of reciprocally connected sensory and integration circuits. Consistent with monkey behaviour in a fixed-duration motion discrimination task, the model integrates sensory evidence transiently, giving rise to a decaying bottom-up CP component. Howe

Sepsis toxicity network reconstruction-Dynamic signaling and multi-organ injury: A review.

Sepsis is a complex systemic disease in which systemic toxicity-arising from inflammation-immune dysregulation, oxidative stress, programmed cell death (apoptosis, pyroptosis, ferroptosis), and metabolic reprogramming-drives multi-organ injury. The aim of this review was to synthesize how signaling pathways evolve within and between key organs (lungs, liver, kidneys, heart) and to evaluate whether multi-omics integration and network modeling can identify critical toxic nodes and predict disease progression. We conducted a narrative review of English-language mechanistic studies published betwe

Functional connectivity alterations in traumatic brain injury patients with late seizures.

PTE is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent and spontaneous epileptic seizures. PTE is a major public health problem occurring in 2-50% of TBI patients. Identifying PTE biomarkers is crucial for the development of effective treatments. Functional neuroimaging studies in patients with epilepsy and in epileptic rodents have observed that abnormal functional brain activity plays a role in the development of epilepsy. Network representations of complex systems ease quantitative analysis of heterogeneous interactions within a unified mathematical framework. In this work, graph theory

Automated quality assurance of rigid brain CT/MR image registration using a 3D convolutional neural network.

BACKGROUND: Accurate CT/MR registration is important in stereotactic brain radiotherapy, where small spatial errors may affect target localization and treatment planning. In many clinical settings, registration quality is still assessed primarily through manual visual inspection. However, time and workflow constraints may limit the consistency and depth of manual evaluation. PURPOSE: This study aimed to develop a 3D convolutional neural network (3D CNN)-based quality assurance (QA) method for rigid brain CT/MR registration using paired sub-volumes and a registration-level mean probability sco

Automated ventricular segmentation and shunt failure detection using convolutional neural networks.

While ventricular shunts are the main treatment for adult hydrocephalus, shunt malfunction remains a common problem that can be challenging to diagnose. Computer vision-derived algorithms present a potential solution. We designed a feasibility study to see if such an algorithm could automatically predict ventriculomegaly indicative of shunt failure in a real-life adult hydrocephalus population. We retrospectively identified a consecutive series of adult shunted hydrocephalus patients over an eight-year period. Associated computed tomography scans were extracted and each scan was reviewed by tw

Data-driven identification of diagnostically useful extrastriatal signal in dopamine transporter SPECT using explainable AI.

This study used explainable artificial intelligence for data-driven identification of extrastriatal brain regions that can contribute to the interpretation of dopamine transporter SPECT with 123I-FP-CIT in parkinsonian syndromes. A total of 1306 123I-FP-CIT-SPECT were included retrospectively. Binary classification as 'reduced' or 'normal' striatal 123I-FP-CIT uptake by an experienced reader served as standard-of-truth. A custom-made 3-dimensional convolutional neural network (CNN) was trained for classification of the SPECT images with 1006 randomly selected images in three different settings

Can artificial intelligence achieve human-level performance? A pilot study of childhood sexual abuse detection in self-figure drawings.

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is a worldwide phenomenon that has negative long-term consequences for the victims and their families, and inflicts a considerable economic toll on society. One of the main difficulties in treating CSA is victims' reluctance to disclose their abuse, and the failure of professionals to detect it when there is no forensic evidence (Bottoms et al., 2014; McElvaney, 2013). Estimated disclosure rates for child sexual abuse based on retrospective adult reports range from 23 % to 45 % (e.g., Bottoms et al., 2014). This study reports the four stages in the development of a

A new 2.5D representation for lymph node detection using random sets of deep convolutional neural network observations.

Automated Lymph Node (LN) detection is an important clinical diagnostic task but very challenging due to the low contrast of surrounding structures in Computed Tomography (CT) and to their varying sizes, poses, shapes and sparsely distributed locations. State-of-the-art studies show the performance range of 52.9% sensitivity at 3.1 false-positives per volume (FP/vol.), or 60.9% at 6.1 FP/vol. for mediastinal LN, by one-shot boosting on 3D HAAR features. In this paper, we first operate a preliminary candidate generation stage, towards -100% sensitivity at the cost of high FP levels (-40 per pat

Resolving the contributions of fatigue-induced migration and scapular reorientation on the subacromial space: an orthopaedic geometric simulation analysis.

Subacromial impingement occurs when tissues interposed between the humeral head and the acromion become compressed between the bones. Two fatigue-related mechanisms are suggested to contribute to this impingement: superior humeral head migration and scapular reorientation, specifically downward rotation, anterior tilt and protraction. Although both mechanisms have received attention, controversy exists regarding their relative contributions to reducing subacromial space width. This simulation study presents a three-dimensional orthopedic model for assessing the spatial relationship between the

Modelling of human walking to optimise the function of ankle-foot orthosis in Guillan-Barré patients with drop foot.

INTRODUCTION: This paper deals with the dynamic modelling of human walking. The main focus of this research was to optimise the function of the orthosis in patients with neuropathic feet, based on the kinematics data from different categories of neuropathic patients. METHODS: The patient's body on the sagittal plane was modelled for calculating the torques generated in joints. The kinematics data required for mathematical modelling of the patients were obtained from the films of patients captured by high speed camera, and then the films were analysed through a motion analysis software. An inv

The neurobiological basis of the awe experience in affective disorders: an exploratory EEG study.

INTRODUCTION: Affective disorders (ADs) are characterized by profound emotional processing deficits involving disrupted neural network activity and connectivity, particularly within the default mode network and fronto-temporal circuits, with abnormalities in theta and alpha oscillatory patterns. While current treatments primarily target mood symptoms, emotional processing impairments often persist and predict relapses. Awe, a complex self-transcendent emotion, may counteract such deficits through its capacity to reduce rumination and enhance positive affect. However, the neural correlates of a

Deep Learning-Based Classification of Peptide Analytes from Single-Channel Nanopore Translocation Events.

Rapid and accurate detection of peptide biomarkers using nanopore biosensors is critical for disease diagnosis and other biomedical applications. Processing large, complex single-channel translocation data streams poses a significant challenge for peptide analyte classification. Here, we present a supervised deep learning data processing pipeline for peptide classification from translocation events. The first stage employs a convolutional and recurrent neural network, adapted from the Deep-Channel multi-channel classifier, to accurately classify raw current recordings into discrete conductance

Multimodal visual system analysis as a biomarker of visual hallucinations in Parkinson's disease.

Visual hallucinations (VH) are present in up to 75% of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. However, their neural bases and participation of the visual system in VH are not well-understood in PD. Seventy-four participants, 12 PD with VH (PDVH), 35 PD without VH (PDnoVH) and 27 controls underwent a battery of primary visual function and visual cognition tests, retinal optical coherence tomography and structural and resting-state functional brain MRI. We quantified cortical thickness with Freesurfer and functional connectivity (FC) of Visual (VIS), Fronto-Parietal (FP), Ventral Attention (VAN) and

Velocity Storage Integrator (VSI): Mechanisms, circuits, and clinical implications A narrative review.

The velocity storage integrator (VSI) is a central, gravity-referenced neural network that prolongs and spatially orients vestibular/optokinetic signals beyond semicircular-canal dynamics. Classical systems analyses framed it as a leaky integrator in an indirect pathway, complementing a high-frequency direct pathway that rapidly stabilizes gaze. Converging unit recordings, lesions, and modeling now localize the spatiotemporal core of VSI to commissural vestibular-nuclei networks-particularly vestibular-only (VO) and vestibular-pause-saccade (VPS) populations-under cerebellar nodulus-uvula (NU)

Predicted structure of the complete CPLANE complex reveals novel interactors and mechanisms of Jbts17 during ciliogenesis.

Cilia are highly conserved organelles that use hundreds of unique proteins to drive extracellular motility and serve as signaling hubs for eukaryotic cells. The Ciliogenesis and Planar Polarity Effector (CPLANE) protein complex controls basal body docking during early ciliogenesis and recruits the intraflagellar transport (IFT) proteins to the base of growing cilia. Leveraging recent advantages in deep learning neural networks and high-performance computing, we predict the structure of JBTS17, the largest CPLANE subunit, and the tertiary structure of the complete CPLANE complex, revealing dire

Selectivity-aware dual-target cholinesterase optimization using a novel model SPaR-GNN.

We developed SPaR-GNN (Selectivity Pair-aware Ranking Graph Neural Network), a multitask molecular learning framework for dual-target cholinesterase optimization. SPaR-GNN jointly predicts acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) activity, and molecular selectivity while incorporating explicit pair-aware supervision from structurally similar analogs and selectivity-cliff pairs. In addition, we integrated SPaR-GNN into a goal-driven molecular optimization workflow for candidate generation and prioritization. Experimental results showed that SPaR-GNN performed satisfac
