Practice parameter: treatment of nervous system Lyme disease (an evidence-based review): report of the Quality Standards Subcommittee of the American Academy of Neurology [RETIRED].

OBJECTIVE: To provide evidence-based recommendations on the treatment of nervous system Lyme disease and post-Lyme syndrome. Three questions were addressed: 1) Which antimicrobial agents are effective? 2) Are different regimens preferred for different manifestations of nervous system Lyme disease? 3) What duration of therapy is needed? METHODS: The authors analyzed published studies (1983-2003) using a structured review process to classify the evidence related to the questions posed. RESULTS: The panel reviewed 353 abstracts which yielded 112 potentially relevant articles that were reviewed,

Prognostic value of OHCA, C-GRApH and CAHP scores with initial neurologic examinations to predict neurologic outcomes in cardiac arrest patients treated with targeted temperature management.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients treated with targeted temperature management (TTM) was to evaluate the prognostic value of OHCA, C-GRApH, and CAHP scores with initial neurologic examinations for predicting neurologic outcomes. METHODS: This retrospective study included OHCA patients treated with TTM from 2009 to 2017. We calculated three cardiac arrest (CA)-specific risk scores (OHCA, C-GRApH, and CAHP) at the time of admission. The initial neurologic examination included an evaluation of the Full Outline of UnResponsiveness brainstem reflexe

PURPOSE: To report all complications that occurred during the 2 to 5-year postoperative period, describe reoperations during this time period, and compare patients who did and did not have major, surgery-related complications and/or reoperations during this time period. METHODS: The Scoli-RISK-1 study enrolled 272 ASD patients undergoing surgery from 15 centers. Inclusion criteria were Cobb angle of > 80°, corrective osteotomy for congenital/revision deformity, and/or 3-column osteotomy. At each follow-up visit, any neurologic or non-neurologic adverse event(AE) was documented & categorized.

Comparing the frequency, antifungal susceptibility, and enzymatic profiles of the oral fungal composition in patients with and without Alzheimer's disease admitted to a neurology clinic.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that changes in the frequency of oral microorganisms may play a key role in the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, no research has been conducted on the oral fungal composition in AD-patients. The present study aimed to investigate the changes in the frequency of oral fungal composition, the antifungal susceptibility, and the enzymatic profiles of oral fungal composition in patients suffering from AD compared to non-AD individuals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the present analytical cross-sectional study during 12 months, 76 hospitalized patients wit

The Neurological Compromised Spine Due to Ewing Sarcoma. What First: Surgery or Chemotherapy? Therapy, Survival, and Neurological Outcome of 15 Cases With Primary Ewing Sarcoma of the Vertebral Column.

BACKGROUND: The vertebral column is an infrequent site of primary involvement in Ewing sarcoma. Yet when Ewing sarcoma is found in the spine, the urge for decompression is high because of the often symptomatic compression of neural structures. It is unclear in alleviating a neurological deficit whether chemotherapy is preferred over decompressive laminectomy. OBJECTIVE: To underline, in this case series, the efficiency of initial chemotherapy before upfront surgery in the setting of high-grade spinal cord or cauda equina compression of primary Ewing sarcoma. METHODS: Fifteen patients with Ew
