Can the use of vitamin D-fortified sunscreen cream be the solution to the vitamin D deficiency pandemic?

Current approaches to vitamin D supplementation are generally limited to its oral intake. In this experimental study, the effects of applying vitamin D-fortified sunscreen creams to the skin on the absorption, and therefore levels of serum vitamin D metabolites were investigated. Forty 8-week-old male Wistar Albino rats were used in the study. Eight rats (Group B) were sacrificed to determine the baseline values of biochemical parameters. The remaining 32 rats were randomly divided into 4 equal groups as follows: Group S, only the back skin of the rats were shaved; Group SD, only vitamin D3 di

Antimicrobial Resistance in Gram-Negative Bacterial Pneumonia After the COVID-19 Pandemic in Northern Iran.

BACKGROUND: The irrational use of antibiotics has become a significant factor in the escalating global crisis of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). AMR is linked to an increasing burden of healthcare-associated infections caused by multidrug-resistant pathogens, which present substantial challenges for infection control and patient management. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the widespread use of antibiotics for treating and preventing secondary bacterial infections further exacerbated the threat of AMR worldwide. This study aimed to determine the antibiotic resistance profile of Gram-negative bact

Lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic: the intranasal administration as a route for treatment - a patent review.

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the fragility of today's marketed treatments for respiratory infections. As a primary site of infection, the upper airways may represent a key access route for the control and treatment for these conditions. The present study aims to explore and identify, through a patent review, the novelty of therapies for COVID-19 that use the intranasal route for drug administration. A search was carried out in Wipo and Espacenet, using the descriptors 'COVID-19 OR SARS-CoV 2' AND 'treatment OR therapy' AND NOT 'vaccine OR immunizing' and the classification 'A61K9/0043'. Of th

Assessing the Impact of Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions During the COVID-19 Pandemic on RSV Seasonality in Europe.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, atypical respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) circulation patterns emerged, with the occurrence of RSV activity outside the typical winter season. This study investigates the impact of COVID-19 and associated non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) on RSV seasonality. METHODS: The onset, offset and peak of RSV epidemics from 2018 to 2022 across 12 European countries were determined using the 3% positivity threshold method. A multilevel longitudinal logit regression model for proportions assessed the associations between five NPIs (school closures, mask u

Understanding the pandemic potential of the avian influenza Virus- key insights into pathogenesis, transmission, and host immunity.

Avian influenza virus (AIV) can infect domestic and wild birds, and recent trends have shown an alarming transmission to non-avian hosts, including humans. The AIV infection is associated with fowl deaths and huge economic losses, besides having high pandemic potential, as per the reports of the WHO. The emergence of new virus subtypes, especially H5N1, driven by rapid mutation rates and genomic reassortments, has been linked to frequent transmission and adaptation to mammalian hosts, posing a significant global threat. The same is reflected by the global increase in AIV infection among humans

"The emerging pandemic threat of H5N1: Evolutionary adaptations for human transmission, zoonotic spillovers and surveillance gaps".

The increasing zoonotic potential of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 poses a growing threat to global public health. This review examines the molecular and evolutionary mechanisms facilitating H5N1 adaptation in mammalian hosts, focusing on genetic reassortment events, key mutations, and transmission dynamics. Recent mammalian spillover cases, including infections in mink, sea lions, felines, and cattle, suggest a weakening species barrier, with mutations such as PB2-E627K and HA-Q226L enhancing viral replication and host receptor binding affinity. Despite these concerning develo

Changes to Endemic Respiratory Virus Circulation and Testing Before, During, and After the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and resulting countermeasures significantly disrupted the circulation of many endemic respiratory viruses. While most viruses experienced sharp declines immediately following the pandemic onset, recovery dynamics varied among species. We hypothesize that the degree of displacement in virus circulation and the time required to return to prepandemic patterns are influenced by the circulation overlap with SARS-CoV-2. METHODS: Respiratory virus testing data from nasopharyngeal specimens (2015 through May 2024) were analyzed for 6 respiratory viruses grouped int

Non-Emergent Oncologic Surgery Cancellation During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Risk-Benefit Analysis.

The COVID-19 pandemic was a devastating worldwide event with great consequences on medical and surgical care that has not been fully evaluated. The pandemic caused an imbalance between rapidly increasing patient needs and limited hospital resources such as staff, personal protective equipment (PPE), and open beds. As a result, surgeons in the United States were encouraged or required to postpone "non-emergent" operations, including some cancer surgeries, in March of 2020. Resource allocation during the pandemic focused on the needs of the community to accommodate potential surges, and cancer p

Mental Health of Young People in the Post-Pandemic Era: Perspective Based on Positive Psychology and Resilience.

With the gradual decline in COVID-19 cases, there is a need to re-visit the mental health of adolescents and emerging adults in the post-pandemic period. Several observations can be highlighted from the scientific literature. First, while some studies suggest that mental health of young people has worsened in the post-pandemic period, there are inconsistent and conflicting findings. Second, there are more studies on psychological morbidity than on positive psychological attributes. Third, compared with the West, there are relatively fewer Chinese studies. Fourth, compared with adolescents, the

Changes in cosmic radiation doses of aircraft crew over the COVID-19 pandemic (2019-2022).

The in-flight cosmic radiation exposure of crew members in commercial jet aircraft is considered occupational exposure. In Japan, a guideline for the management of in-flight exposure of aircraft crews was established in 2006 by the radiation council. Accordingly, in-flight doses of aircraft crews have been calculated, and their annual in-flight doses have been recorded for the last 18 years, for which the authors have cooperated with airlines to calculate aviation route doses on a monthly basis. In this brief report, we present the trend of annual dose distributions of cabin attendants (CAs) a

A Phenomenological Study of Nursing Home Residents' Experience During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Lessons Learned.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has inflicted widespread fear and distress on older populations globally. As highlighted by the World Health Organization, those residing in nursing homes are especially at risk due to the communal living arrangements and the high prevalence of chronic health conditions among residents. Because of the increased vulnerability of nursing home residents, harsher restrictive measures, such as social isolation, were implemented as part of infection control strategies, with a particular emphasis on reducing mortality rates and limiting the spread of disease. As a re
