Reptiles of the order Squamata are commonly parasitized by ticks in the family Ixodidae. However, they can also host argasid ticks of the genus Ornithodoros. In this study, we reported Ornithodoros rietcorreai parasitizing a Boa constrictor and a human in Caatinga Zoobotanical Park, within the 72nd Caatinga Infantry Battalion of the Brazilian Army in Petrolina, Pernambuco (PE). Thirty argasid tick specimens, including two larvae, 17 nymphs, four females, and seven males, were removed from the body surface of the snake. Substantial environmental infestations were observed within the snake enclo

The phylum Apicomplexa contains ~ 6000 known species of unicellular eukaryotic parasites. A unifying feature among the apicomplexans is the apical complex, which varies in complexity in different lineages, but always contains an annulus (a.k.a. the apical polar ring) into which the minus ends of an array of cortical microtubules are embedded. In Toxoplasma gondii, the apical complex also includes the conoid, which contains several signaling and structural proteins critical for parasite motility. The conoid extends and retracts through the apical polar ring in a calcium-dependent manner. Here w

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) remains difficult to treat because Leishmania parasites persist within dermal macrophages and suppress their microbicidal activity, promoting chronic infection. Toll-like receptor (TLR) agonists can restore macrophage effector functions, but their therapeutic use is limited by systemic toxicity. Here, we developed a lipid-based nanoemulsion (NE) for the systemic delivery of the TLR7 agonist gardiquimod (GDQM) to improve macrophage targeting and reduce off-target inflammatory effects. Following intravenous administration, GDQM-NEs efficiently accumulated in dermal l

Ticks are important vectors of numerous zoonotic pathogens, yet integrated molecular surveillance of wildlife hosts and their parasitizing ticks remains limited in Korea. In this study, we investigated the occurrence of major tick-borne bacterial pathogens in wildlife and their associated ticks. Blood samples were collected from Korean water deer (Hydropotes inermis), raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides), and wild boars (Sus scrofa), and a total of 246 ticks were obtained from these 34 animals. Molecular analyses identified multiple bacterial pathogens, including Anaplasma phagocytophilum,

BACKGROUND: Testosterone is hypothesized to influence energetic tradeoffs between male reproduction and immune function. Testosterone is generally thought to be immunosuppressive, with high testosterone levels signaling male health and infection resistance. The Immunocompetence Handicap Hypothesis (ICHH) posits that testosterone's role in developing male secondary sexual characteristics and suppressing immune function creates a tradeoff between testosterone-linked traits and immunocompetence. Yet, the immune effects of testosterone in humans remain poorly understood. Research is particularly l

Angiostrongylus vasorum is a metastrongylid nematode that parasitizes the pulmonary arteries and right heart of canids, being the etiological agent of canine angiostrongylosis, a disease of growing veterinary concern due to its expanding geographic distribution and the involvement of domestic and wild hosts. In Brazil, the parasite has been reported mainly in domestic dogs and some wild canids, and its occurrence in mustelids has been documented only once previously. This study reports the first occurrence of A. vasorum infecting a lesser grison (Galictis cuja) in Brazil. The mustelid was foun

Pinworms of primates are highly host-specific parasites that, in several lineages, are known to share their evolutionary history with that of their hosts. However, for many primate clades, pinworm diversity has been incompletely assessed, leaving some groups of hosts entirely unexplored and large geographic gaps in our knowledge of primate-pinworm associations. In this study, morphological and molecular data (28S rDNA and COI mtDNA) were integrated to assess pinworm diversity across five spider monkey taxa (Ateles spp.) from Mexico to Ecuador. Only two species of pinworms were found parasitizi

Geographic distance is often recognized as a leading factor structuring the diversity of parasite communities. However, specific ecological and biogeographic mechanisms underlying the influence of this factor are not always evident. We used the material on the helminths of Fulica atra Linnaeus, 1758 (Rallidae) from seven areas in the Palaearctic to study geographic differentiation of the parasite communities at the level of both component communities and infracommunities. The analysis of spatial patterns of the parasite communities included (i) a reconnaissance study exploring the directions o

Parasites can impose substantial fitness costs on hosts, yet infection intensity varies markedly among individuals and across life stages. Age-related variation in parasite burden may reflect shifts in behaviour or physiology that alter exposure and susceptibility, or arise from selective disappearance of heavily infected individuals. Distinguishing between these processes is essential for understanding the ecological and evolutionary consequences of parasitism in wild populations. Age at first reproduction (AFR) is a fundamental life-history trait that shapes lifelong infection dynamics throu

Plague is a zoonotic disease of mammals caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. Because plague is primarily transmitted by fleas (Siphonaptera), rates of plague transmission are expected to increase with flea abundance. Edaphic factors can influence the abundance and dispersion of fleas, suggesting that soils may play important roles in plague ecology. From June to August 2010-12, in northern New Mexico, USA, we investigated the effects of soil texture, soil moisture, and soil water-holding capacity on the abundance of adult fleas parasitizing colonial, burrowing black-tailed prairie dogs (Cy

This article will analyze the uncertainties around collecting and classifying Hydnora africana in the first half of the nineteenth century. Emerging from the distinctive dryland ecologies of South Africa, Hydnora was interpreted as strange and cryptic by Europeans primarily because it is a root parasite-a complex floral trait that was little understood. Its unique timescale, dramatic structural change in drying, and resistance to travel made collection extremely difficult, and an inability to collect such plants informed debates on how naturalists could make classifications without seeing them

The parasitic dinoflagellate Hematodinium is an infectious pathogen that causes severe enzootic in numerous economically important marine crustaceans worldwide. Previous research has focused on investigating the identification and life stages of Hematodinium parasites, while the parasite abundance and tissue proliferation process of Hematodinium in naturally infected crustacean hosts need to be further studied. In the present study, the tissue tropisms and intensity of H. perezi were investigated in the naturally infected Chinese swimming crabs Portunus trituberculatus by both the qualitative

Pathogen genomics is a powerful tool for tracking infectious disease transmission. In malaria, identity-by-descent is used to assess the genetic relatedness between parasites and has been used to study transmission and importation. In theory, identity-by-descent can be used to distinguish genealogical relationships to reconstruct transmission history or identify parasites for QTL experiments. MalKinID (Malaria Kinship Identifier) is a new classification model designed to identify genealogical relationships among malaria parasites based on genome-wide identity-by-descent proportions and identit

Hypnozoites - dormant Plasmodium parasites in the liver - can cause relapse infections and form a major obstacle to malaria eradication. The mechanisms controlling dormancy remain poorly understood, but hypnozoite formation and reactivation is likely regulated by a combination of parasite intrinsic factors and external stimuli. We reviewed current knowledge of Plasmodium dormancy and drew parallels with dormancy in other parasites and life-cycle stages. Epigenetic, post-transcriptional, or post-translational regulation probably jointly control hypnozoite dormancy at the intrinsic level. Additi

This study investigated the modulation of Eimeria spp. parasite load and its impact on productivity parameters in lambs fed varying levels of babassu by-product (BBP). Twenty-four Dorper × Santa Inês lambs naturally infected with Eimeria spp. were divided into four groups and assigned to dietary treatments with increasing levels of BBP inclusion: Control group (0% BBP; n = 6), G1 (5% BBP; n = 6), G2 (10% BBP; n = 6), and G3 (15% BBP; n = 6). Fecal oocyst counts, dry matter intake (DMI), average daily gain (ADG), and apparent digestibility coefficients were monitored throughout the experiment.

Chemical peptide engineering, enabled by residue insertion, backbone cyclization, and incorporation of an additional disulfide bond, led to a unique cyclic peptide that efficiently inhibits the invasion of red blood cells by malaria parasites. The engineered peptide exhibits a 20-fold enhanced affinity toward its receptor (PfAMA1) compared to the native peptide ligand (PfRON2), as determined by surface plasmon resonance. In-vitro parasite growth inhibition assay revealed augmented potency of the engineered peptide. The structure of the PfAMA1-cyclic peptide complex, predicted by the deep learn

Malaria is a deadly disease for which therapeutic options are threatened by the rise of antimalarial resistance. Inhibiting the formation of hemozoin (the product of heme detoxification) in the digestive vacuole (DV) is the mechanism of action of numerous antimalarial drugs, including those in development as new therapies. This drug target remains attractive as hemozoin is an abiotic and non-mutable molecule, unique to the parasite. The underlying parasite biology of the heme detoxification pathway is complex and requires a deeper understanding. This study focuses on the DV of Plasmodium falci

In this study, we built on the known inhibitory potential of diaminoquinazolines (DAQs) against different stages of Plasmodium development and designed a convenient two-step synthesis to combine DAQ with primaquine (PQ) pharmacophore. The PQ-DAQ hybrids displayed potent in vitro activities in the low nanomolar range (IC50 135.20-398.80 nM) against all intra-erythrocytic stages of the drug-sensitive 3D7 strain, with significant potency enhancement compared to PQ alone (IC50 9370 nM). These hybrids were also potent at killing drug-resistant strains (Dd2, Dd2 R539T, IPC4912, CamWT C580Y, and 7G8)

Plant-parasitic nematodes cause substantial economic losses in agriculture globally. Chemical nematicides with cost-effectiveness and immediate availability continue to be widely used; however, their environmental and health risks have driven the discovery of eco-friendly alternatives. In this study, 60 natural quinones were screened for nematicidal activity to discover new nematicides that are environmentally friendly. Therefore, by evaluating the activities of these compounds against B. xylophilus, A. besseyi, and D. destructor, and find that 5,8-dihydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone (DHNQ) exhibited

A new species of Tereancistrum Kritsky, Thatcher & Kayton, 1980, collected from the gills of Brycon nattereri (Bryconidae) in the Cerrado, in the state of Goiás, Brazil, is described based on morphological and molecular data, based on the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) gene region. Tereancistrum campanum n. sp. is distinguished from all its congeners by the unique 'bell-shaped' accessory piece in the male copulatory complex. Molecular analysis revealed that the specimens analyzed formed a distinct group from other Tereancistrum sequences and that the sequences of Tereancist
