OBJECTIVE: To implement care practices for perineal trauma prevention and repairing in normal birth.
METHOD: Quasi-experimental study conducted at Hospital da Mulher Mãe-Luzia, in Macapá, AP, Brazil. Seventy-four (74) nurses and obstetricians and 70 post-partum women were interviewed and the records of 555 patients were analyzed. The study was conducted in three stages: pre-audit and baseline audit (phase 1); educational intervention and implementation of best practices (phase 2); post-implementation audit (phase 3). Data was analyzed by comparison of the results of phases 1 and 3.

METHODS: We studied the association of postprandial self-monitored urine glucose with HbA1c concentrations in 264 people with Type 2 diabetes (mean age 62.4 years, time since diagnosis of diabetes 6.8 years and HbA1c 50 mmol/l). All patients took part in a diabetes treatment and teaching programme. HbA1c values were adjusted according to the Diabetes Control and Complication Trial.

Postoperative pain is still a major complication causing discomfort and significant suffering, especially for children. Therefore, every effort should be made to prevent pain and treat it effectively once it arises. Under-treatment of pediatric pain is often due to a lack of both knowledge about age-specific aspects of physiology and pharmacology and routine pain assessment. Factors for long term success require regularly assessing pain, as routinely as the other vital signs together with documentation of side effects. The fear of side effects mostly prevents the adequate usage of analgesics.
