Microcephaly and congenital cytomegalovirus infection: a combined prospective and retrospective study of a Swedish infant population.

Microcephaly and its etiology were studied in an unselected Swedish urban infant population. Virtually, all live-born infants (14,724) born between October 1977 and December 1983 in the city of Malmö, Sweden, were included in the study. Special attention was given to the role of congenital infections, particularly to cytomegalovirus infection. The infant population was studied from two points of view. One part of the study was prospective and based on regular cytomegalovirus isolation in urine within the first week of life. About 80% of the newborns were adequately studied by this test. None o

METHODS: This study used ADNI data from 422 consented Wave 4 participants who had completed a MoCA, Functional Activity Questionnaire, Logical Memory II (delayed memory task), Trails Making Test - Part B, Neuropsychiatric Inventory, and Geriatric Depression Scale. Emotional Intelligence as a Differentiated Personal Resource: Component-Level Associations with Burnout Among Higher-Education Teachers.

Drawing on the personal-resource logic of the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model, this study examines emotional intelligence (EI) not as a single global trait but as a differentiated set of self-regulatory resources associated with distinct burnout dimensions. Using cross-sectional, self-report data from higher-education instructors (N = 292; complete-case N = 161-185 for the multivariable models), EI was assessed with the Bar-On Emotional Quotient Inventory and burnout with the BO-SE Burnout Screening Scales (mental, emotional, physical, and social exhaustion, plus an aggregated index); hiera

Ultrasound-Based Wearable for Older Chronic Back Pain Patients: A Requirement Analysis of a User Interface for Biofeedback.

PURPOSE: This study explores how older adults with chronic back pain (CBP) evaluate different user interface (UI) designs and gamification elements for an ultrasound-based wearable providing real-time biofeedback during segmental stabilization exercises (SSE). The aim is to identify design preferences and motivational factors to enhance usability, engagement, and adherence in this specific population. METHODS: We conducted a mixed-methods study with 15 older adults (aged ≥ 65) experiencing CBP. Participants interacted with three UI mockups (simple, anatomical, and playful) via a Wizard-of-Oz

Change in the association between financial hardship and mental health before and during the cost-of-living crisis in Australia.

There is growing concern that the current cost-of-living (COL) crisis may have exacerbated the adverse experience of financial hardship and its effect on mental health, but no study has provided evidence on this using longitudinal data. We aimed to address this knowledge gap to inform policy responses. We analysed 13 annual waves (2012‒24) of nationally representative data from the longitudinal Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey to examine change in the prevalence of financial hardship and the association between hardship and mental health from the pre-crisis per

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation: an effective treatment for resistant depressive episodes in the elderly.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in older (≥60 years) versus younger (<60 years) patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD), and to determine whether age affects clinical outcomes in a naturalistic clinical setting. METHOD: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 272 patients with TRD treated with rTMS at a tertiary psychiatric hospital. Depression severity was assessed at baseline, end-of-treatment (V1), and one-month follow-up (V2) using the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) and the Beck Depression Inv

NPAS2 gene variants modulate the circadian preference-depression link in Major Depressive Disorder: A mediation role of sleep and somatic symptoms.

Circadian dysregulation is implicated in Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). This study investigated the mediating roles of sleep disturbances and somatic symptoms in the circadian preference-depression relationship and explored moderating effects of NPAS2 variants in 257 MDD patients. The Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD-17,17-item clinician-rated measure of depression severity), Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ, circadian preference scale), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI, sleep quality measure), and Depression and Somatic Symptoms Scale (DSSS, somatic symptom inventory

Intranasal Esketamine in Patients with Treatment-resistant Depression Who Have Previously Failed Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation: A Case Series.

Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) is major depression that has not responded to at least two trials of antidepressants. The STAR-D study highlighted the necessity of multiple treatment steps to achieve remission, with each step decreasing the likelihood of success and increasing relapse risk, underscoring the complexity of TRD treatment and the need for personalized approaches. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive technique using magnetic fields to stimulate brain nerve cells, targeting the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, that is effective in many patients with depressio
