Neuroimaging of the functional and structural networks underlying visuospatial vs. linguistic reasoning in high-functioning autism.

High-functioning individuals with autism have been found to favor visuospatial processing in the face of typically poor language abilities. We aimed to examine the neurobiological basis of this difference using functional magnetic resonance imaging and diffusion tensor imaging. We compared 12 children with high functioning autism (HFA) to 12 age- and IQ-matched typically developing controls (CTRL) on a pictorial reasoning paradigm under three conditions: V, requiring visuospatial processing; S, requiring language (i.e., semantic) processing; and V+S, a hybrid condition in which language use co

A dual-route perspective on poor reading in a regular orthography: an fMRI study.

This study examined functional brain abnormalities in dyslexic German readers who - due to the regularity of German in the reading direction - do not exhibit the reading accuracy problem of English dyslexic readers, but suffer primarily from a reading speed problem. The in-scanner task required phonological lexical decisions (i.e., Does xxx sound like an existing word?) and presented familiar and unfamiliar letter strings of existing phonological words (e.g., Taxi-Taksi) together with nonwords (e.g., Tazi). Dyslexic readers exhibited the same response latency pattern (words<pseudohomophones<no

Ethnic influences on neurovascular coupling: a pilot study in whites and Asians.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: An ethnic extraintracranial difference in atherosclerosis has been well reported, whereas the potential mechanism remains unclear. We aimed to investigate neurovascular coupling in healthy whites and Asians. METHODS: Twenty volunteers of each ethnicity were recruited to perform a functional transcranial Doppler examination with standardized checkerboard patterns as visual stimulation (3 x 4, 6 x 8, and 12 x 16 checks subtending a visual field section of 18 degrees x 24 degrees , flicker rate 1 Hz). Hemodynamic responses in both posterior cerebral arteries were evaluate

Functional specialization and convergence in the occipito-temporal cortex supporting haptic and visual identification of human faces and body parts: an fMRI study.

Humans can recognize common objects by touch extremely well whenever vision is unavailable. Despite its importance to a thorough understanding of human object recognition, the neuroscientific study of this topic has been relatively neglected. To date, the few published studies have addressed the haptic recognition of nonbiological objects. We now focus on haptic recognition of the human body, a particularly salient object category for touch. Neuroimaging studies demonstrate that regions of the occipito-temporal cortex are specialized for visual perception of faces (fusiform face area, FFA) and

An event-related potential study on exposure therapy for patients suffering from spider phobia.

The present event-related potential (ERP) study investigated electrocortical changes related to cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) in spider phobic females. Forty-five patients and twenty non-phobic women were presented with phobia-relevant, generally fear-inducing, disgust-inducing and affectively neutral pictures in a first EEG session. Phobic patients were randomly assigned to either a therapy (TG) or a waiting-list (WG) group. EEG measurement was repeated after CBT or a waiting period. ERPs were extracted in the time windows 340-500ms (P300), 550-770ms (late positive potential (LPP), early L

Functional and anatomical profile of visual motion impairments in stroke patients correlate with fMRI in normal subjects.

We used six psychophysical tasks to measure sensitivity to different types of global motion in 45 healthy adults and in 57 stroke patients who had recovered from the initial results of the stroke, but a large subset of them had enduring deficits on selective visual motion perception tasks. The patients were divided into four groups on the basis of the location of their cortical lesion: occipito-temporal, occipito-parietal, rostro-dorsal parietal, or frontal-prefrontal. The six tasks were: direction discrimination, speed discrimination, motion coherence, motion discontinuity, two-dimensional fo

Threshold-independent functional MRI determination of language dominance: a validation study against clinical gold standards.

Functional MRI (fMRI) is often used for presurgical language lateralization. In the most common approach, a laterality index (LI) is calculated on the basis of suprathreshold voxels. However, strong dependencies between LI and threshold can diminish the effectiveness of this technique; in this study we investigated an original methodology that is independent of threshold. We compared this threshold-independent method against the common threshold-dependent method in 14 patients with epilepsy who underwent Wada testing. In addition, clinical results from electrocortical language mapping and post

Repetition suppression in occipital-temporal visual areas is modulated by physical rather than semantic features of objects.

Functional magnetic-resonance imaging was used to identify areas involved in naming objects and to examine which of these areas adapted to either physical or semantics features of objects. We presented successive pairs of objects that were either the same exemplar of an object, different exemplars of that object, or different objects. By controlling for differences in physical features between pairs of different exemplars and different objects, visual areas in the occipital-temporal cortex were subject to repetition suppression when the same exemplars of an object were repeated, but not when d

Impaired recognition of facial emotions from low-spatial frequencies in Asperger syndrome.

The theory of 'weak central coherence' [Happe, F., & Frith, U. (2006). The weak coherence account: Detail-focused cognitive style in autism spectrum disorders. Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 36(1), 5-25] implies that persons with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) have a perceptual bias for local but not for global stimulus features. The recognition of emotional facial expressions representing various different levels of detail has not been studied previously in ASDs. We analyzed the recognition of four basic emotional facial expressions (anger, disgust, fear and happiness) from

Seeing direct and averted gaze activates the approach-avoidance motivational brain systems.

Gaze direction is known to be an important factor in regulating social interaction. Recent evidence suggests that direct and averted gaze can signal the sender's motivational tendencies of approach and avoidance, respectively. We aimed at determining whether seeing another person's direct vs. averted gaze has an influence on the observer's neural approach-avoidance responses. We also examined whether it would make a difference if the participants were looking at the face of a real person or a picture. Measurements of hemispheric asymmetry in the frontal electroencephalographic activity indicat

Visuomotor tracking abilities of speakers with apraxia of speech or conduction aphasia.

This investigation examined the visuomotor tracking abilities of persons with apraxia of speech (AOS) or conduction aphasia (CA). In addition, tracking performance was correlated with perceptual judgments of speech accuracy. Five individuals with AOS and four with CA served as participants, as well as an equal number of healthy controls matched by age and gender. Participants tracked predictable (sinusoidal) and unpredictable signals using jaw and lip movements transduced with strain gauges. Tracking performance in participants with AOS was poorest for predictable signals, with decreased kinem

Age and culture modulate object processing and object-scene binding in the ventral visual area.

Behavioral differences in the visual processing of objects and backgrounds as a function of cultural group are well documented. Recent neuroimaging evidence also points to cultural differences in neural activation patterns. Compared with East Asians, Westerners' visual processing is more object focused, and they activate neural structures that reflect this bias for objects. In a recent adaptation study, East Asian older adults showed an absence of an object-processing area but normal adaptation for background areas. In the present study, 75 young and old adults (half East Asian and half Wester

What aspects of emotional functioning are impaired in schizophrenia?

Disturbances in emotional functioning are a major cause of persistent functional disability in schizophrenia. However, it is not clear what specific aspects of emotional functioning are impaired. Some studies have indicated diminished experience of positive affect in individuals with schizophrenia, while others have not. The current study assessed emotional responses by 34 individuals with schizophrenia and 35 demographically matched healthy participants to 131 images sampling a wide range of emotional arousal and valence levels. Ratings of affective response elicited by individual images were

Are action and perception in near and far space additive or interactive factors?

Functional imaging has revealed differential neural mechanisms underlying action directed toward near or far space. Because some neuropsychological studies of patients with visuospatial neglect failed to show near/far dissociations with perceptual tasks, we investigated whether action and perception elicit distinct cerebral representations in near and far space. We measured regional cerebral blood flow with positron emission tomography in normal volunteers who performed manual line bisection (action) and made line bisection judgments (perception). Stimuli were presented in near space or far sp

Effects of acute hyperhomocysteinemia on the neurovascular coupling mechanism in healthy young adults.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Hyperhomocysteinemia is a vascular risk factor that infers with the nitric oxide signaling pathway of endothelial vasoregulation. Most investigations in young healthy humans on the peripheral vasculature using a standardized methionine challenge demonstrated altered vascular reactivity. In contrast, the cerebral autoregulation mechanism was shown to be unaffected by the same methionine load. To obtain additional insight into the compensatory range of the cerebral vasculature during a methionine challenge, we tested the neurovascular coupling mechanism that adjusts cereb

Free radical trap phenyl-N-tert-butylnitrone protects against light damage but does not rescue P23H and S334ter rhodopsin transgenic rats from inherited retinal degeneration.

Phenyl-N-tert-butylnitrone (PBN) protects rat retinas against light damage. Because the degenerative process involved in light damage and inherited retinal degeneration both lead to a common final cell death, apoptosis, we used transgenic rats with a P23H or S334ter rhodopsin mutation to test the effects of PBN on retinal degeneration and light damage and the susceptibility of the transgenic rats to light damage. In the first study, 3-week-old mutant and wild-type rats were given no drug, 0.25% PBN in drinking water, or 0.25% PBN in drinking water plus three daily intraperitoneal injections of

Average evoked responses and psychophysical performance in patients with pseudohypoparathyroidism.

Perceptual function in eight patients with pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP) was studied with two neurophysiological measures, the average evoked response (AER) and nerve conduction velocity. A battery of psychophysical tasks including reaction time, size estimation, `hidden pictures,' and the rod and frame procedure was also used. Patients with PHP had significantly longer latency visual AER and slower reaction time than a group of normal volunteers, and they performed erratically and poorly on the other psychophysical tasks. Differentiating these patients with diffuse mental deficiency were two

Hearing Aid Use is Associated with Faster Visual Lexical Decision.

This study investigates the impact of hearing aid (HA) use on visual lexical decision (LD) performance in individuals with hearing loss. We hypothesize that HA use benefits phonological processing and leads to faster and more accurate visual LD. We compared the visual LD performance among three groups: 92 short-term HA users (<5 years), 98 long-term HA users, and 55 nonusers, while controlling for hearing level, age, and years of education. Results showed that, compared with non-HA users, HA users showed significantly faster reaction times in visual LD, specifically, long-term HA use was assoc

Oral Intake of Hydrogen Water Improves Retinal Blood Flow Dysregulation in Response to Flicker Stimulation and Systemic Hyperoxia in Diabetic Mice.

PURPOSE: To examine the effects of hydrogen water on retinal blood flow (RBF) dysregulation in diabetes, we evaluated changes in RBF in response to flicker stimulation and systemic hyperoxia in diabetic mice. METHODS: Twelve type 2 diabetic mice were divided into a group that received non-hydrogen water (n = 6, control group) and the other that received hydrogen-rich water (0.6-0.8 mM) (n = 6, HRW group) from six weeks of age. Body weight, blood glucose, intraocular pressure, and blood pressure were evaluated from eight to 14 weeks of age. RBF was measured in the vascular area of the optic di

Functional neuroanatomy of racial categorization from visual perception: A meta-analytic study.

We effortlessly sort people into different racial groups from their visual appearance and implicitly generate racial bias affecting cognition and behavior. As these mental activities provide the proximate mechanisms for social behaviours, it becomes essential to understand the neural activity underlying differences between own-race and other-race visual categorization. Yet intrinsic limitations of individual neuroimaging studies, owing to reduced sample size, inclusion of multiple races, and interactions between races in the participants and in the displayed visual stimuli, dampens generalizab
