The role of gut microbiota in paediatric short bowel syndrome.

Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is one of the leading causes of intestinal failure in children. Its development is influenced not only by the length and function of the residual intestine but is also closely related to the homeostasis of the gut microbiota. In recent years, the role of the gut microbiota in intestinal adaptation, metabolic regulation, and the development of complications in pediatric SBS has gradually garnered attention. This review summarizes the characteristics of the gut microbiota, mechanisms underlying dysbiosis, associations with complications, and microbiota-targeted therape

Engineering Nanomaterial Platform for Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Three-Dimensional Integration of Delivery Mechanism, Therapeutic Drug Delivery and Intelligent Material Design.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic intestinal inflammatory disorder with a complex etiology and a high recurrence rate. Conventional treatments face significant limitations in targeting, stability, and efficacy. Going beyond conventional reviews that focus on isolated mechanisms, this review offers a systematic integration of three engineering perspectives: how to deliver (targeting mechanisms), what to deliver (pathology-based therapeutic payloads), and what to use for delivery (smart material design). We highlight emerging nanoplatforms-including nanozymes, probiotic-based nano-de

Harnessing the gut microbiota in extra-intestinal cancers: from causal evidence to immunotherapy strategies.

The gut microbiota (GM) has emerged as a key modulator of cancer development and therapeutic response beyond the gastrointestinal tract. In extra-intestinal cancers, GM composition influences oncogenesis, with specific microbial taxa and their metabolites linked to either increased or decreased cancer risk, as highlighted by Mendelian Randomization studies. Beyond cancer initiation, GM plays a critical role in shaping the efficacy and toxicity of anticancer therapies, particularly immunotherapy. We searched PubMed and ClinicalTrials.gov using the terms"gut microbiota," "immune checkpoint inhib

Ligilactobacillus salivarius 8-2 attenuates intestinal mucosal injury in chicks via the mitochondrial fision-glycometabolism reprogramming axis.

The intestinal mucosa is crucial for nutrient absorption and barrier function. In this study, a newly identified strain of Ligilactobacillus salivarius (L. sa. 8-2) exhibited a mucosal protective effect in chick intestinal injury models. However, the underlying mechanisms need to be clarified. In vivo, chicks were pre-fed with L. sa. 8-2 supernatant or its precipitate and then challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or Salmonella Typhimurium (STm). The results showed that L. sa. 8-2 and its supernatant significantly reduced intestinal epithelial apoptosis, increased goblet cell density and Mu

Gut microbiota in asthma: mechanisms, clinical evidence, and therapeutic opportunities.

Asthma is a heterogeneous chronic airway inflammatory disease associated with high global prevalence and substantial clinical burden. Conventional therapies remain limited in controlling refractory phenotypes and preventing disease progression. The gut-lung axis has emerged as a fundamental regulatory network connecting intestinal homeostasis with pulmonary immune function, and mounting evidence has established a close mechanistic link between gut dysbiosis and the onset, persistence, and exacerbation of asthma. This review comprehensively integrates evidence from epidemiological investigation

Microbes, mood, and metabolism/obesity: Pharmacological insights into the gut-obesity-depression triad.

The global rise in obesity and depression, two highly prevalent and often comorbid disorders has intensified interest in the gut–brain axis as a shared biological link. Mounting evidence indicates that the gut microbiota profoundly influences both metabolic and neuropsychiatric regulation, positioning it as a promising therapeutic target for these interconnected conditions. This review explores the complex interactions among microbial dysbiosis, host metabolism, and mood regulation, emphasizing pharmacological strategies that harness this triad for treatment. Gut-derived hormones such as gluca

Pathogenesis and intervention strategies for metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease from the perspective of the gut-microbiota-liver axis.

Trillions of microorganisms in the human gut are important regulators of health, and the gut and liver have a symbiotic relationship with them. The study found that there is bidirectional communication of substances and signals between the gut and liver, and the gut microbiota is an important medium for mediating bidirectional communication in the gut-liver axis. During metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) development, the gut microbiota and its metabolites change to different degrees and affect MAFLD pathogenesis through the gut-liver axis. However, the bidirectional c

Direct-Fed Microbials in Diets of Market Pigs Did Not Impact Salmonella Levels, Shiga Toxin-Producing Escherichia coli, Growth Performance, and Carcass Characteristics.

Salmonella enterica and Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) have been associated with the gastrointestinal tracts of growing-finishing swine. Identification of pre-harvest pathogen mitigations is imperative. The probiotics BIOPLUS 2B and Probicon L28 were evaluated as direct-fed microbials to 1) reduce Salmonella and STEC in the lymph nodes and feces of commercial growing-finishing pigs, and 2) improve growth performance and carcass characteristics. Market pigs (n = 650) were fed a standard corn-soybean meal finishing diet according to the following treatments: Probicon L28 at 1.0 ×

The gut microbiome in polycystic ovary syndrome: mechanistic pathways and therapeutic potential of microbiota-targeted interventions.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrine disorders worldwide, affecting 6-13% of reproductive-aged women and exerting a profound metabolic, reproductive and psychological toll. Emerging evidence suggests that the gut microbiome may be a potentially critical, yet under-recognized, contributor to the pathophysiology of PCOS. Alterations in microbial composition and function appear to influence hormonal imbalance, metabolic dysfunction and inflammatory processes that characterize the condition. However, much of the current evidence remains associative or derived from p

Barrier restoration as a therapeutic strategy for disorders of gut-brain interaction.

Disorders of gut-brain interaction, such as irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia, are increasingly linked to defects in gut barrier function. Mucosal disruption, encompassing alterations in the epithelial and mucus layers, leads to enhanced intestinal permeability, microbial translocation, and aberrant immune and neuronal signalling, potentially contributing to symptom severity. Despite growing recognition of barrier dysfunction in disorders of gut-brain interaction, clinical interventions remain largely symptom-based, with few therapies designed to directly restore epithelial int

Pathogenesis and therapeutic strategies in the interaction between gut microbiota and enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli infection.

Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) is a major foodborne pathogen that causes hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic uremic syndrome. Increasing evidence indicates that the gut microbiota plays a central role in modulating EHEC pathogenesis through complex metabolic and signaling networks. Beneficial commensals, including Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, and segmented filamentous bacteria, contribute to colonization resistance by competing for nutrients and adhesion sites, producing antimicrobial metabolites, and enhancing epithelial barrier integrity. In contrast, certain species such as Bact

Lactobacillus johnsonii-derived extracellular vesicles modulate gut microbiota metabolites and macrophage-related immune responses against Salmonella Typhimurium infection.

Salmonella Typhimurium is a significant pathogen causing diarrhea in weaned piglets, capable of triggering systemic inflammation and severe intestinal damage. As bioactive components of gut microbiota, extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from Lactobacillus johnsonii (Lj-EVs) are likely to penetrate the intestinal mucus layer and reach host cells, potentially mediating host-microbiome interactions. Here, we found that Lj-EVs improved the intestinal barrier and attenuated intestinal injury in mice infected with S. Typhimurium. Multi-omics analysis showed that Lj-EVs intervention enriched mucin-
