Suicidality Risks Associated with Finasteride, a 5-Alpha Reductase Inhibitor: An Evaluation of Real-World Data from the FDA Adverse Event Reports.

Background: Finasteride, a 5α-reductase inhibitor, is used for androgenetic alopecia and benign prostatic hyperplasia. However, concerns have emerged about its psychiatric side effects, including suicidality. This study analyzed finasteride-related reports from the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) to identify potential safety signals. Methods: Adverse events reported from 2015 to 2024 were extracted using preferred terms, quantified using Bayesian analysis and disproportionality metrics, including empirical Bayesian geometric mean (EBGM), information component (IC), reporting odds ra

'You constantly have to be switched on': A qualitative interview study of parents of children with STXBP1-related disorders in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: Disorder-related variants in the STXBP1 gene are increasingly detected in children with severe developmental disorders. It is commonly acknowledged that developmental disorders significantly impact family life, but little is known about the day-to-day experiences of caregivers living with children with STXBP1-related disorders (STXBP1-RD). This knowledge gap may hinder researchers and care professionals from aligning research activities, care, and support with the perspectives of parents. METHODS: We conducted a semi-structured interview study to gain a better understanding of the

Contributors to Adherence to Exercise Therapy in Non-Specific Chronic Low Back Pain: A Systematic Review of Qualitative and Quantitative Research.

Background/Objectives: Chronic low back pain is the leading global cause of disability, with a growing prevalence and socioeconomic burden. Despite strong evidence supporting exercise therapy (ET) as a primary treatment, adherence rates remain low, compromising outcomes and increasing healthcare costs. Research on contributing factors to adherence to ET in non-specific chronic low back pain (nsCLBP) is limited. This systematic review aimed to reconceptualise contributors to adherence, using a conceptual framework to explore their interrelations and complexity by integrating quantitative and qu

Hospitalisations Related to Adverse Drug Reactions in Switzerland in 2012-2019: Characteristics, In-Hospital Mortality, and Spontaneous Reporting Rate.

INTRODUCTION: Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) contribute to morbidity, and serious ADRs may cause hospitalisation and death. This study characterises and quantifies ADR-related hospitalisations and subsequent in-hospital deaths, and estimates the spontaneous reporting rate to regulatory authorities in Switzerland, where healthcare professionals are legally obliged to report ADRs. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study from 2012 to 2019 analysed nationwide data from the Federal Statistical Office. ICD-10 coding rules identified ADR-related hospitalisations. To estimate the reporting rate, indi

The future of robotics can be ours.

As the use of robotic aides increases the possibility of telesurgery, the perioperative scope of practice could include using patients' homes or other nontraditional settings as surgical sites. Even mobile surgical vans could be used. To perform telesurgery, the health care industry actively must define the role of the health care professional with the patient who can make an incision and insert a laparoscope. This may create an opportune time to promote the RN first assistant (RNFA) role--a goal that will involve expanding our state nurse practice acts to allow RNFAs to perform various functi

Informed choices: Patients' and healthcare professionals' perspectives on high-risk prostate cancer treatment decision-making.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with non-metastatic, high-risk prostate cancer (HR PCa) often face a choice between radical prostatectomy (RP) and external beam radiation therapy (EBRT), typically combined with androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). We explored the considerations that lead patients to prefer either RP or EBRT with or without ADT. To contextualize these preferences, we examined how treatment information provision for HR PCa patients is organized in Dutch hospitals and how it is experienced by both patients and healthcare professionals (HCPs). METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews

Building bridges to outpatient treatment services for post-overdose care via paramedic buprenorphine field initiation.

INTRODUCTION: Despite sustained efforts to reduce opioid-related overdose fatalities, rates have continued to rise. In many areas, overdose response involves emergency medical service (EMS) personnel administering naloxone and transporting patients to the emergency department (ED). However, a substantial number of patients decline transport, and many EDs do not provide medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD). One approach to filling this gap involves delivering MOUD to overdose patients in the field with trained post-overdose EMS teams who can initiate buprenorphine. In this MOUD field initi

[Hepatitis C in a psychiatric setting: A forgotten reservoir?].

Hepatitis C is a transmissible hepatic and extra-hepatic disease caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV). HCV develops into a chronic infection among approximately 70% of the contaminated subjects. Chronic HCV infection is estimated to affect between 0.5% and 1 % of the general population in France, which causes an important burden of disease, in particular due to the occurrence of cirrhosis and liver cancer. New antiviral drugs now allow to cure more than 95% of patients in just a few weeks of treatment with very limited safety issues. This therapeutic revolution has led the World Health Organi

"The Pain and Suffering Are Just Too Great for Me to Manage": A Qualitative Study of Emotional Distress among Anesthesiologists after Challenging Clinical Events.

BACKGROUND: Anesthesiologists manage acute clinical events that can cause emotional distress. These experiences can lead to mental health challenges and affect clinicians' ability to provide care. However, the literature regarding specific factors of clinical events that cause emotional distress is limited, and their impact remains understudied. The objectives were to explore elements within anesthesiologists' practice environment contributing to distress associated with clinical events and elicit emotions and symptoms regarding clinical events that are distressing long term. METHODS: Anesthe

Development of Core Outcome Sets for People Undergoing Major Lower Limb Amputation for Complications of Peripheral Vascular Disease.

OBJECTIVE: Every year, thousands of patients with peripheral vascular disease undergo major lower limb amputation. Despite this, evidence for optimal management is weak. Core outcome sets capture consensus on the most important outcomes for a patient group to improve the consistency and quality of research. The aim was to define short and medium term core outcome sets for studies involving patients undergoing major lower limb amputation. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature and focus groups involving patients, carers, and healthcare professionals were used to derive a list of potent

Laying the foundation for an International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health Core Set for community-dwelling elderly adults in primary care: the clinical perspective identified in a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: Having more information about the biopsychosocial functioning of their geriatric patients might help physicians better balance medical interventions according to patients' needs. For this reason, we aimed to develop an easy-to-handle International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) Core Set for community-dwelling geriatric patients aged 75 and older in primary care. In this empirical study, we describe the functioning and health of community-dwelling patients aged 75 and older in primary care in Germany and identify the most common problems encountered by th
