OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between recovery of urinary continence after laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (LRP) and preoperative/postoperative membranous urethral length (MUL) on magnetic resonance imaging.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 69 patients with pathologic confirmed prostate carcinoma who underwent laparoscopic radical prostatectomy. Preoperative MUL was defined as the distance from the apex of prostate to the level of the urethra at penile bulb on the coronal image. Postoperative MUL was defined as the distance from the bladder neck to the level of the urethra at

BACKGROUND: Tumor heterogeneity has been identified as a major roadblock for cancer immunotherapy. To overcome this, universal effector cell engagers with interchangeable tumor-targeting adaptors have been developed. Current concepts in this field consist of antibody-based adaptors. Small-molecule (SM) ligands, on the other hand, infiltrate tissues rapidly, have short half-lives, and are potentially orally available. Therefore, we hypothesized that utilizing SM adaptors, combined with effector antibodies, could represent an attractive off-the-shelf therapy.
METHODS: Here, we introduce the dev

INTRODUCTION: The occurrence of clear cell tumors in the bladder is not uncommon. Clear cell dysplasia is well-described and characterized by focal replacement of transitional mucosa by cells with abundant clear cytoplasm, nuclear enlargement, and a granular chromatin pattern. Clear cells can also be seen in clear cell adenocarcinoma, which is rare, comprising 0.5% to 2.0% of the reported bladder carcinomas. Other clear cell tumors found in the bladder to be considered in the differential diagnosis are tumors of Müllerian origin and metastatic lesions, such as renal cell carcinoma, clear cell

Brief administration of estrogen to newborn rats permanently imprints adult prostatic androgen receptor (AR) expression in a lobe-specific manner. To delineate this effect, we examined the immediate effects of early estrogen exposure on the changing AR pattern in the developing ventral, dorsal, and lateral prostate lobes. Antibodies against rat AR (PG-21) were used in combination with several antibodies to cell-specific antigens for positive cellular identification by immunocytochemistry. At birth, mesenchymal cells of the ventral prostate were strongly AR positive (AR+). Epithelial cells stai

BACKGROUND: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is associated with multiple long-term urinary complications, including obstructive renal failure if left untreated. Transurethral thulium laser enucleation of the prostate (ThuLEP) has become an increasingly popular method in the treatment of BPH, as it has reduced postoperative bleeding compared to surgery. However, it requires correct plane removal and capsular integrity maintenance, resulting in a steep learning curve. Thus, identifying BPH patients for whom ThuLEP is feasible, despite the increased difficulty, may aid in optimizing their care.

Digital rectal examination (DRE) continues to occupy a central role in the assessment of urological disease, providing a quick, inexpensive, and simple method to evaluate the prostate gland as well as the surrounding pelvic structures. Although the diagnostic landscape has changed somewhat due to the increasing use of serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing, multiparametric MRI, and molecular biomarkers, "classic" DRE retains an important clinical, educational, and ethical value in many areas of medical practice. Before the establishment of PSA screening and advanced imaging, DRE was the

BACKGROUND: Metastasis-directed therapy (MDT) can defer androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) in oligorecurrent prostate cancer, but outcomes vary and there is a paucity of risk stratification tools. We aimed to develop and validate a nomogram to predict ADT-free survival.
METHODS: In this international, retrospective cohort study across ten hospitals and academic institutions in Europe (Austria, Italy, Latvia, the Netherlands, Poland, and Portugal), we included men aged 18 years and older with histologically confirmed prostate cancer (all subtypes) previously treated with curative-intent local

IMPORTANCE: Racial and ethnic disparities in prostate cancer are poorly understood. A given disparity-related factor may affect outcomes differently at each point along the highly variable trajectory of the disease.
OBJECTIVE: To examine clinical outcomes by race and ethnicity in patients with nonmetastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (nmCRPC) within the US Veterans Health Administration.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A retrospective, observational cohort study using electronic health care records (January 1, 2006, to December 31, 2021) in a nationwide equal-access health care

PURPOSE: For several years, oncological positron emission tomography (PET) has developed beyond 2-deoxy-2-[18F]fluoro-D-glucose ([18F]FDG). This umbrella review of meta-analyses aims to provide up-to-date, comprehensive, high-level evidence to support appropriate referral for a specific radiopharmaceutical PET/computed tomography (CT) or PET/magnetic resonance (MR) in the diagnosis and staging of solid cancers other than brain malignancies.
METHODS: We performed a systematic literature search on the PubMed/MEDLINE and EMBASE databases for meta-analyses assessing the accuracy of PET/CT and/or

CONTEXT: Because pelvic lymph node (LN)-positive prostate cancer (PCa) is generally considered a regionally metastatic disease, surgery needs to be better defined.
OBJECTIVE: To review the impact of radical prostatectomy (RP) and pelvic lymph node dissection (PLND), possibly in conjunction with a multimodal approach using local radiotherapy and/or androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT), in LN-positive PCa.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: A systematic Medline search for studies reporting on treatment regimens and outcomes in patients with LN-positive PCa undergoing RP between 1993 and 2012 was performed.

BACKGROUND: Although glucocorticoids have been used to treat patients with hormone-refractory prostate carcinoma (HRPC), reports have varied regarding the types and doses of glucocorticoids used as well as their clinical benefits. In the current study, low doses of dexamethasone were investigated for their specific beneficial effects and the feasibility of long term treatment.
METHODS: Thirty-seven patients diagnosed with HRPC were treated with oral dexamethasone (0.5-2 mg/day). The patients ranged in age from 53-89 years (median, 74 years). Thirty-two patients, including 6 with lymph node me

BACKGROUND: Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) can provide a prostate cancer (PCa) detection approach in positron emission tomography (PET) using Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved PSMA-11 peptide. There are some studies evaluated magnetic-nanoprobes for PSMA detection by MRI, using non-FDA-approved ligands including antibodies or peptides, which are not as specific as PSMA-11.
PURPOSE: To assess targeted iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) by PSMA-11 peptides as a potential specific nano-molecular probes to investigate a PSMA+ PCa-xenograft model by MRI.

In an effort to isolate genes with down-regulated expression at the mRNA level during oncogenic transformation of human mammary epithelial cells (MECs), we performed subtractive hybridization between normal MEC strain 76N and its radiation-transformed tumorigenic derivative 76R-30. Here, we report the isolation of cDNA clones corresponding to a 1.4-kb mRNA species that is abundantly expressed in 76N cells but is drastically reduced in 76R-30 cells. Based on its selective expression in MECs compared with fibroblasts, the corresponding gene is designated NES1 (normal epithelial cell-specific 1).
