Avoidable errors in the modelling of outbreaks of emerging pathogens, with special reference to Ebola.

As an emergent infectious disease outbreak unfolds, public health response is reliant on information on key epidemiological quantities, such as transmission potential and serial interval. Increasingly, transmission models fit to incidence data are used to estimate these parameters and guide policy. Some widely used modelling practices lead to potentially large errors in parameter estimates and, consequently, errors in model-based forecasts. Even more worryingly, in such situations, confidence in parameter estimates and forecasts can itself be far overestimated, leading to the potential for lar

Mom and pop versus the big boys: adult family homes as providers of Medicaid-funded residential care.

This paper compares assisted living apartments (ALs), adult residential care facilities (ARCs), and small adult family homes (AFHs) for Medicaid residents in Washington State, with particular emphasis on the settings, staffing, services, and policies of AFHs. We targeted for enrollment all residents entering an AFH, ARC, or AL setting on Medicaid/state funding in a three-county area of Washington State. We obtained information on 199 settings, interviewing administrative and direct care providers. AFHs are smaller than ARCs and ALs and less likely to be part of a chain, with no significant dif

Risky decisions despite counter evidence: modeling a culture of safer sexual practices.

To create a culture of safe practices, we need to understand how and under what conditions the public makes risky decisions about their health. Because risky sexual behaviors are known to be common in young adults, we investigated their decision making regarding sexual activities that could incur a high risk of HIV infection. Sixty young urban adults maintained journals for two weeks and were interviewed regarding condom use and sexual history. We characterized four patterns of condom use behavior: consistent (35.0%), inconsistent (16.7%), consistent to inconsistent (35.0%), and inconsistent t

Screening University Students for Health Checks With an Electronic Health Questionnaire in Finland: Protocol for a Retrospective, Register-Based Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Health questionnaires and health checks are an established part of preventive health care services in Finland. However, only very limited research of these has been conducted. The Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS) provides primary health care services to all bachelor's and master's degree university students (approximately 134,500 students) in Finland. FSHS's statutory health examination process of university entrants includes an electronic health questionnaire (eHQ) and, based on the students' eHQ responses, a subsequent health check if necessary. To our knowledge, no previous

Translating one health research evidence into action: co-production of rabies control knowledge in Côte d'Ivoire.

BACKGROUND: Translating research evidence into practice has become a priority for academics, funders and public institutions worldwide. However, many research projects still lack strategies and funds for policy-related research translation, innovation, dissemination and uptake activities. This study focuses on research evidence on rabies produced by Centre Suisse de Recherches Scientifiques en Côte d'Ivoire under GAVI's project. It aims to (i) identify the mechanism used by researchers to share evidence with practitioners, policy makers and local communities and to (ii) identify what facilitat

CanDo (Canadian Donor Milk) randomised controlled trial: pasteurised human donor milk supplementation in the well-baby unit - protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Mother's milk is the gold standard for feeding newborns. Despite lactation support while in hospital, supplementation rates remain high in Canadian well-baby units at 35-50%. When supplementation is needed, the choice between formula milk and pasteurised human donor milk (donor milk) remains uncertain with a lack of clinical trials to inform this practice. This study aims to compare the effect of supplementing mother's milk with donor milk versus formula in infants at higher risk for supplementation (infants of diabetic mothers, infants born small for gestational age or with a bi

Multidomain interventions: state-of-the-art and future directions for protocols to implement precision dementia risk reduction. A user manual for Brain Health Services-part 4 of 6.

Although prevention of dementia and late-life cognitive decline is a major public health priority, there are currently no generally established prevention strategies or operational models for implementing such strategies into practice. This article is a narrative review of available evidence from multidomain dementia prevention trials targeting several risk factors and disease mechanisms simultaneously, in individuals without dementia at baseline. Based on the findings, we formulate recommendations for implementing precision risk reduction strategies into new services called Brain Health Servi

SARS-CoV-2 and reproductive system: a scientometric study.

OBJECTIVES: Growing evidence, such as Long COVID, suggests that the interaction and underlying mechanism between SARS-CoV-2 and human cells, especially the long-term effect on the reproductive system, remain poorly understood, which should raise high public health concern. This study aimed to enhance understanding of the scientific development status in this field of the viral infection and the human genital system, and to explore key hotspots, thematic trends, major issues through a scientometric analysis of the relevant literature. METHODS: This study retrieved the literature (2020-2025) on

Implementing AMR surveillance at a tertiary hospital in a low-income country: results from the Surveillance Partnership to Improve Data for Action on AMR (SPIDAAR) in Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global health threat, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where infectious diseases are more prevalent. Effective surveillance in these settings is key for tracking resistance trends and informing public health interventions, yet few implementation studies have delineated the particular challenges and opportunities for antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) activities in LMICs. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of a multi-component AMR surveillance capacity-building intervention on institutional surveill

Empowering knowledge dissemination: a 5A model for health professionals in IVF health communication through short videos.

BACKGROUND: Patients increasingly rely on social media for IVF-related information; however, the quality of such content remains suboptimal. Health professionals who receive systematic medical education possess disciplinary knowledge that supports the production of accurate health communication. Engaging in health communication can strengthen their ability to translate specialized knowledge into accessible language, a skill that also connects with the competence of continuing medical education. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate IVF-related short videos on Douyin and to propose a practi

Management and referral for high-risk conditions and complications during the antenatal period: knowledge, practice and attitude survey of providers in rural public healthcare in two states of India.

BACKGROUND: Appropriate antenatal care improves pregnancy outcomes. Routine antenatal care is provided at primary care facilities in rural India and women at-risk of poor outcomes are referred to advanced centres in cities. The primary care facilities include Sub-health centres, Primary health centres, and Community health centres, in ascending order of level of obstetric care provided. The latter two should provide basic and comprehensive obstetric care, respectively, but they provide only partial services. In such scenario, the management and referrals during pregnancy are less understood. T

Rationale, Design, and Participant Baseline Characteristics of a Parallel Randomized Trial of the Effect of Replacing SSBs with Cow's Milk Versus Soymilk on Intrahepatocellular Lipid and Other Cardiometabolic Risk Factors in Adults with Obesity Who Consume Sugar-Sweetened Beverages: The Soy Treatment Evaluation for Metabolic health (STEM) Trial.

Background/Objectives: Liver fat represents an early metabolic lesion in the development of diabetes and its cardiometabolic complications. Diets high in free sugars, particularly from sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs), are associated with abdominal obesity and increased cardiometabolic risk, prompting global guidelines to limit SSBs as a major public health strategy. Low-fat cow's milk is promoted as the preferred caloric replacement strategy for SSBs due to its high nutritional value and cardiometabolic advantages. Fortified soymilk is a plant-based alternative with approved health claims for

Health impacts of climate change on children and adolescents: A protocol for review of reviews.

INTRODUCTION: Climate change is a contemporary phenomenon of grave concern to global public health. Climate change events such as droughts, wildfires, tornadoes, heatwaves, floods, sea level rise, hurricanes, tropical cyclones, landslides, extreme rainfall, typhoons, dust storms, and desertification significantly affect local, regional, and global living conditions. In Sub-Saharan Africa, the most disturbing of these are desertification, droughts, and floods, which directly threaten water supplies, food security, and the livelihoods of millions of people. The climate crisis affects the health

Health impact of alcohol regulatory interventions: a systematic review of policies in low- and middle-income countries.

Alcohol consumption poses significant public health challenges globally, with low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) experiencing a substantial burden from alcohol-related harm. However, the effectiveness of interventions to control alcohol consumption in LMICs remains understudied. This paper aims to investigate the effectiveness of alcohol regulatory interventions adopted in LMICs. A systematic search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Web of Science was conducted on 10 August 2024. The search strategy included terms related to regulatory interventions and their impact on alcohol co

Protocol for an aged cohort study to create a single indicator that expresses the trajectory of intrinsic capacity over the years and its relation to functional abilities.

Population aging will be on the public health agenda in the coming decades. By 2050, 16% of the world's population will be aged 65 and above, mostly living in middle- and low-income countries. In Brazil, the aged population will triple by 2050, from less than 20 million to approximately 65 million, making it the sixth largest aged population in the world. Population aging is associated with an increase in the prevalence of chronic non-communicable diseases, which in turn promotes a functional decline in people who age. This often leads to limitations in daily life and dependence, with clear im

Measuring food insecurity among a national sample of children with recurrent acute otitis media.

INTRODUCTION: Acute otitis media is one of the most common reasons for pediatric medical visits in the United States. Additionally, past studies have linked food insecurity and malnutrition with increased infections and worse health outcomes. However, there is a lack of information on the risk factors for food insecurity in specific patient populations, including the pediatric recurrent acute otitis media (RAOM) population. METHODS: The 2011 to 2018 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) datasets were used to obtain a national estimate of the presentation of food insecurity within pediatric
