Benchmarking a massively parallel nucleic acid hybridization platform for monitoring biomarkers of public health significance in wastewater.

Nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) are exquisitely sensitive and specific, able to accurately and quickly monitor vanishingly small amounts of RNA or DNA in wastewater-based public health surveillance applications. Yet, multiplexing samples and target assays is difficult and the dependence of NAATs on enzymes increases false negative rates with inhibitor-rich environmental samples. The Nanostring nCounter system (NNS) is a nucleic acid hybridization platform with a capability for high multiplexing (upwards of 800 probes) that directly counts RNA or DNA biomarkers without reverse transcri

Agreement Between Consumer and Research-Grade Physical Activity Monitors in a Public Health Intervention for Adolescent Latinas.

Consumer wearables are increasingly used in physical activity (PA) interventions, but their validity as a measurement tool among low PA groups, like adolescent girls, is unclear. We assessed the minute- and day-level agreement between PA measures among adolescent Latinas from an intervention. Participants wore a Fitbit Inspire HR and an ActiGraph GT3X+ for overlapping epochs. ActiGraph data were classified using two different cut points and aligned with Fitbit data to produce 1,149,169 matched minutes of wear across 137 adolescent girls (M = 15.73 yrs). Confusion matrices were calculated for p

De-energization as maladaptation: Uneven residential exposure to wildfire Public Safety Power Shutoffs and compound heat.

In response to growing levels of wildfire destruction, electric utility companies are adopting powerline de-energization as an adaptation strategy intended to prevent wildfire ignitions. While reducing wildfire risk, planned de-energizations also expose residents to electricity loss, potentially causing harmful consequences. We investigated the extent to which planned de-energization can be considered a form of maladaptation, in which an adaptive response to a climate-related hazard results in unintended, concurrent harms. To do so, we examined the co-occurrence of Public Safety Power Shutoffs

Male and Female Infertility in the Quest for Research Support and Public Health Interest: Analysis of Two Large Databases.

Objective  The rate of infertility is increasing and affects males and females relatively equally. With the rise of infertility cases impacting both males and females, there will be an increased need for screening, diagnostic, and treatment modalities to meet the growing demand. However, it is unclear if disparities exist regarding research funding allocation and public interest. The purpose of this study is to compare research expenditure and public interest between male and female infertility. Beauty versus the beast: The UK public prefers less-extreme body shapes in brachycephalic dog breeds.

BACKGROUND: Brachycephalic dog breeds often exhibit a suite of extreme conformations linked with several severe and long-term disorders. Despite this, ownership levels of brachycephalic breeds remain high internationally, with physical appearance being an important driver in their acquisition. Moving these breeds away from conformational extremes is necessary to protect canine welfare. This study aimed to explore how a range of extreme conformations in common brachycephalic breeds are perceived by the UK public. METHODS: An online questionnaire used images generated by artificial intelligence

Seasonal Trends in Public Interest for Gastrointestinal Symptoms: A 10-Year Infodemiology Analysis Using Google Trends.

Online search data have emerged as a novel tool to assess public health interest and behavior. Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are prevalent, yet little is known about their seasonal variation from a population behavior standpoint. This study uses Google Trends to evaluate temporal patterns in public search interest for common GI symptoms over a 10-year period in the United States. Relative search volumes (RSVs) for six GI symptoms (stomach pain, heartburn, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, and bloody stool) were extracted from Google Trends spanning January 2015 to January 2025. Data were norm

Public transit and methadone - Spatial analyses of opioid treatment program access in Greater Boston, 2020-2022.

OBJECTIVE: Methadone, an FDA-approved medication, can effectively treat opioid use disorder (OUD). However, long travel times to opioid treatment programs (OTPs) commonly present barriers to initiating and continuing methadone treatment. We utilized geographic information systems to identify areas with unmet OTP access needs via public transportation and walking in Boston, Massachusetts. METHODS: We created public transit-time and walk-time catchment areas around OTPs. We assessed spatial overlap between the catchment areas and locations of opioid-related overdose decedent residences from 202

Incidence and predictors of preterm neonatal mortality at public hospitals in Eastern Ethiopia: A prospective follow-up study.

INTRODUCTION: Preterm birth is a major clinical problem, affecting 15 million births every year worldwide. It is the largest cause of death in children under the age of five. Even though different studies have been done regarding the incidence of preterm neonatal death in some parts of Ethiopia, there is a paucity of evidence, especially in the eastern part. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the incidence and predictors of preterm neonatal mortality at public hospitals in eastern Ethiopia from May 1, 2022, to March 30, 2023. METHODS: An institution-based prospective follow-up study was co

Seroprevalence of brucellosis in camels and humans in the Al-Qassim region of Saudi Arabia and its implications for public health.

Brucellosis is a significant zoonotic disease caused by intracellular, gram-negative bacteria from the genus Brucella. Although camels are classified as secondary hosts for Brucella species, they are among the most susceptible and vulnerable animals to brucellosis, particularly Brucella abortus (B. abortus) and Brucella melitensis (B. melitensis). The present study aimed to investigate the epidemiology of camel brucellosis as a zoonotic disease by determining the seroprevalence of brucellosis in both camels and humans, assessing potential risk factors (e.g., age, size, and location), and condu
