Segmentation of patients with cataract according to their ocular biometry: the LAKE classification.

PURPOSE: To create a classification for cataractous eyes based on their ocular biometry and thus provide a standard to stratify eyes when evaluating intraocular lens (IOL) formulas performance in different groups. SETTING: High-resolution cataract surgery unit. DESIGN: Monocentric, observational, retrospective study. METHODS: Data of 21 797 patients (both eyes explored) were acquired between 2016 and 2024. An exploratory analysis on the most relevant biometric variables determined the presence of uncommon eyes, justifying the need of a stratification. Eyes were classified in 27 subgroups ba

Peripheral retinal lesions in highly myopic children: prevalence, types and biometric correlates.

AIMS: To evaluate prevalence, types and biometric predictors of peripheral retinal lesions in highly myopic children. METHODS: Retrospective cross-sectional study at a tertiary centre. Participants were aged 4-17 years with high myopia (≤-4.00 dioptres (D) at 4-6 years; ≤-6.00 D at 7-17 years). Peripheral retina was assessed by ultra-widefield imaging (UWF) and/or documented dilated ophthalmoscopy. RESULTS: We analysed 160 eyes from 89 children (mean age 10.4±3.8 years; mean spherical equivalent -9.95±3.59 D; mean axial length (AL) 26.68±1.82 mm). Peripheral lesions were present in 87/160 ey

Multimodal Predictive Modeling for Visual Quality Recovery After Keratorefractive Lenticule Extraction.

PURPOSE: To investigate the factors influencing visual quality recovery after keratorefractive lenticule extraction (KLEx) and to establish a predictive model for postoperative visual quality using multimodal data integration. METHODS: A prospective, non-interventional single-center study was conducted on 210 eyes from 105 myopic patients undergoing KLEx surgery. Preoperative and postoperative visual quality was assessed using the Objective Scatter Index (OSI). High-precision segmentation of posterior lenticule scanning images was performed using a U-net-based deep learning model to extract r

OBJECTIVE: To compare the accuracy of sixteen intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation formulas incorporating targeted adjustments or regression-based modifications of axial length (AL) in eyes longer than 26.00 mm. DESIGN: Retrospective observational study. METHODS: The data of myopic patients with cataract who underwent uneventful phacoemulsification with in-the-bag implantation of a PARTIAL-RoF narrow IOL between January 2020 and June 2025 were reviewed. Ultra-short-term refractive outcomes after Yamane technique scleral-fixated intraocular lens implantation: a comparison of anterior vitrectomy and pars plana vitrectomy.

BACKGROUND: The Yamane technique for sutureless scleral-fixated intraocular lens (YTSFIOL) implantation is an established option for visual rehabilitation in eyes without capsular support. However, evidence on ultra-short-term refractive outcomes and the influence of different vitreous management strategies remains limited. METHODS: This retrospective observational cohort study included consecutive adult patients who underwent YTSFIOL implantation by a single surgeon at a tertiary centre. Ultra-short-term outcomes were defined as visual and refractive outcomes assessed at six weeks postoperat

Refractive outcomes after cataract surgery using swept-source OCT biometry and image-guided toric IOL alignment: a prospective comparative study in normal versus long axial length eyes.

This prospective comparative study evaluated the refractive accuracy of the ARGOS® swept-source OCT biometer combined with the VERION™ Image-Guided System in cataract surgery using the Barrett Universal II formula. Ninety eyes were divided into Normal Axial Length (AL) (22.5–26.0 mm, n = 50) and Long AL (≥ 26.0 mm, n = 40) groups. All underwent phacoemulsification with PanOptix® Toric IOL implantation. The primary outcome was mean refractive prediction error (RPE) at 1 month. The mean RPE was − 0.07 ± 0.18 D in the Normal AL Group and − 0.05 ± 0.23 D in the Long AL Group (P = 0.375). The perce

PURPOSE: This study investigated the change in higher order aberrations (HOAs) and visual acuity with wavefront-guided scleral lenses (WFGSLs) in the management of patients with keratoconus. METHODS: A total of 22 eyes from 13 patients with keratoconus were fit with WFGSLs utilizing a commercially available aberrometer to further reduce residual HOAs uncorrected via traditional scleral lenses (tSLs). Effect of substitutive growth hormone therapy on myopia control among Chinese children.

PURPOSE: To explore the correlation between recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) therapy and myopia progression, and to optimize the myopia control strategies in myopic children undergoing rhGH therapy. METHODS: This retrospective study included 27 myopic children receiving rhGH therapy and 57 myopic children in the control group, all of whom underwent myopia interventions. Axial length (AL) and refraction were measured by IOLMaster and an autorefractor after cycloplegia. AL changes were compared between the rhGH and control groups, before and after rhGH therapy, and among different myopia

Improved control efficacy of a novel aspherical orthokeratology lens compared with the traditional three-zone spherical lens in a single-blind randomized clinical trial.

PURPOSE: Orthokeratology lenses slow myopia progression by over 50% on average. Efficacy and optical outcomes of aspherical and spherical orthokeratology lens designs in controlling myopia progression are compared, focusing on axial length (AL), choroidal thickness (CHT), and relative peripheral refractive errors. METHODS: A multicenter, single-blind, randomized controlled trial was conducted in Sichuan, China (2022-2023), with 30 participants aged 8-13 (mean age 10.8 ± 1.8 years; 70 % male). Inclusion criteria embraced refractive errors between -0.75 and -6.00 D. Each eye was randomly assign

PURPOSE: To evaluate the impact of intraocular lens (IOL) positional change following cataract surgery, measured by swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) in eyes with different lens thicknesses (LTs), and its influence on the accuracy of IOL power calculation. METHODS: This prospective cohort study enrolled patients who planned to undertake phacoemulsification and monofocal IOL implantation, and were divided into three groups according to the LT (LT<4 mm, 4 mm≤LT<5 mm, LT≥5 mm).
