OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the role of current syphilis as a risk factor for foetal death.
METHODS: Sera were obtained from 57 women with third trimester foetal death (cases) and 58 women with foetus alive (controls) matched for age and parity. All sera reactive in qualitative Rapid Plasma Reagin (RPR) analyses were tested with serial twofold dilutions to determine endpoint flocculation titres and tested with the micro-haemagglutination assay for Treponema pallidum (MHA-TP). Placental biopsies were sectioned and stained by haematoxylin-eosin and Warthin-Starry for light microscopy.

One hundred and two newly diagnosed children with malignancy followed up at the Pediatric Oncology Department of Ankara Oncology Hospital were investigated for hepatitis B, hepatitis C and human immunodeficiency virus markers. The ages ranged between seven months and 17 years with a median of 10 years; 62 were male. Twenty-four patients had Hodgkin's disease, 11 had non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and 67 patients had other solid tumours. Four patients had positive HBs-Ag, 15 developed immunity against hepatitis B and had anti-HBs antibodies. One patient had a previous infection with positive anti-HBc.

We describe a variety of toxoplasmic lesions in seven patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. The first patient had multiple small-intestinal ulcers associated with Toxoplasma tachyzoites and high antibody titers; he died of disseminated histoplasmosis. The second patient, who died of tuberculosis, also had an inactive chronic Toxoplasma infection, with tissue cysts in the brain that were associated with glial nodules. A third patient died of Toxoplasma encephalitis, manifested by multiple foci of necrosis associated with Toxoplasma tachyzoites, cysts, and hypertrophic arteritis.

The enzyme-linked immunoelectrotransfer blot (EITB) method was evaluated as a suitable method for detecting antibodies against M antigen of Histoplasma capsulatum by use of both glycosylated and deglycosylated M protein of histoplasmin (HMIN). The vero cell lysate antigen for the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) of flaviviruses was evaluated for sensitivity, specificity including cross-reactions, and background by comparing with the standard ELISA. An echinococcus antigen with an apparent molecular weight of 8 kDa was identified as diagnostically important. An immunoblot assay using this antigen was 91% sensitive for surgically confirmed Echinococcus granulosus hydatid disease of the liver. Specificity was 100% for echinococcosis. Marked cross-reactivity was observed with serum specimens from patients with E. multilocularis and E. vogeli infections. The 8 kDa component was not related to the widely recognized echinococcus antigen 5.
