Pubertal Timing During Early Adolescence: Advanced Pubertal Onset in Females with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by impaired social communication and poor adaptation to change; thus, the onset of puberty may be a pivotal transition. This cross-sectional study measured pubertal timing to examine hypothesized differences for sex (female vs. male) and group (ASD vs. typical development [TD]). Participants included 239 children (137 ASD, 102 TD) between 10 and 13 years. The ASD group included 35 females and 102 males; the TDs included 44 females and 58 males. Pubertal onset measured by genital or pubic stage was investigated with linear regression using main ef

Work environments and HIV prevention: a qualitative review and meta-synthesis of sex worker narratives.

BACKGROUND: Sex workers (SWs) experience a disproportionately high burden of HIV, with evidence indicating that complex and dynamic factors within work environments play a critical role in mitigating or producing HIV risks in sex work. In light of sweeping policy efforts to further criminalize sex work globally, coupled with emerging calls for structural responses situated in labour and human-rights frameworks, this meta-synthesis of the qualitative and ethnographic literature sought to examine SWs' narratives to elucidate the ways in which physical, social and policy features of diverse work

Engaging with digital health: a cross-sectional study of older adults' use of online health information exchange.

BACKGROUND: Online health information exchange (OHIE) increasingly shapes how individuals interact with healthcare providers and peers. Yet, despite older adults' often high need for health information, their engagement with OHIE remains insufficiently understood, given persistent age-related differences in digital access and skills. METHODS: This study draws on a population-based survey of older adults aged 60 + in Switzerland (N = 1,261) to analyze three types of OHIE: interactions with doctors, other healthcare providers, and peers. Logistic regression models were used to assess how sociod

Emotional ecosystems: Understanding the relationship between family interactions and anxiety among cancer caregivers.

OBJECTIVES: Recent studies have challenged the assumption that families are invariable sources of support for cancer caregivers, noting that relationships with family members can have both positive and negative effects on caregiver well-being. This study expands upon prior literature to examine the relationship between cancer caregivers' perceptions of the quality of their family interactions and their symptoms of anxiety. METHODS: We employed secondary analysis of baseline data from a multisite randomized clinical trial of an intervention for cancer caregivers conducted at 3 large academic p

The Frequency and Determinants of Positive and Negative Officiating Interactions and the Relationships with Mental Ill-Health Symptoms in Sports Officials.

BACKGROUND: Concerns exist about the prevalence of abuse directed towards sports officials and its impact on their mental health; however, sports officiating can also be a rewarding experience. OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to identify the frequency and determinants of both positive (e.g. praise, appreciation, apologies) and negative (e.g. verbal abuse, physical abuse, social media abuse) officiating interactions and to examine their independent contributions to mental ill-health symptoms. METHODS: An online, cross-sectional survey was distributed to current or former sports officials

" Blaming, shaming, humiliation": Stigmatising medical interactions among people with non-epileptic seizures.

Background: People with non-epileptic seizures (NES) describe challenging relationships with health professionals, and explain negative interactions as common and expected. Despite these difficulties, little is known about how people with NES experience difficult healthcare encounters. Methods: Using a thematic discourse analysis approach, we analysed the free-text survey responses of 135 people with NES and asked: what kind of challenges do people living with this condition encounter when interacting with health professionals, and how do they experience the consequences of difficult interacti

Exploring robot-led activities between people living with dementia and family care partners.

INTRODUCTION: While shared activities foster connection between people living with dementia (PLWD) and their care partners, emotional distress and daily caregiving responsibilities often make them difficult to initiate. This paper investigates the adaptation of a socially assistive robot, Ommie, to guide shared deep breathing and singing activities for these pairs. METHODS: We refined the robot's behaviors through two interaction design sessions with people living with dementia and care partners, mediated by an occupational therapist. In a subsequent study with 17 pairs, participants engaged

Psychosocial impact of epidermolysis bullosa on patients: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is an inherited disorder that results in painful skin blisters requiring daily wound care. The psychosocial impact of EB is one of the most significant concerns for patients, but there is minimal research addressing these concerns or ways to improve patient quality of life (QoL). OBJECTIVE: To examine the psychosocial impact of EB on affected patients and ways to improve their QoL. METHODS: Eight EB participants were selected from the 2006 DEBRA Family Conference Day in Toronto. Participants were interviewed by a social worker and a field evaluator. The

Reliability, factor structure, and measurement invariance of the Dominic Interactive across European countries: Cross-country utility of a child mental health self-report.

Large-scale international surveys are important to globally evaluate, monitor, and promote children's mental health. However, use of young children's self-reports in these studies is still controversial. The Dominic Interactive, a computerized DSM-IV-based child mental health self-report questionnaire, has unique characteristics that may make it preeminently appropriate for usage in cross-country comparisons. This study aimed to determine scale score reliabilities (omega) of the Dominic Interactive in a sample of 8,135 primary school children, ages 6-11 years old, in 7 European countries, to c

What are the underlying transmission patterns of COVID-19 outbreak? An age-specific social contact characterization.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 has spread to 6 continents. Now is opportune to gain a deeper understanding of what may have happened. The findings can help inform mitigation strategies in the disease-affected countries. METHODS: In this work, we examine an essential factor that characterizes the disease transmission patterns: the interactions among people. We develop a computational model to reveal the interactions in terms of the social contact patterns among the population of different age-groups. We divide a city's population into seven age-groups: 0-6 years old (children); 7-14 (primary and junior

How Implementation Context Shapes Clinician Acceptance and Engagement with Guideline-Based Clinical Decision Support Systems in Primary Care: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Guideline-based clinical decision support (CDS) tools have become central to promoting evidence-based, high-quality primary care. Despite widespread implementation, clinician adoption and sustained use remain inconsistent. Existing research has typically examined technological usability or organizational implementation factors separately, providing limited understanding of how these influences interact in real-world primary care settings. This study examined how organizational implementation context and clinician technology acceptance jointly shape adoption and sustained use of gui

Learning from a multi-agency trauma-informed care training initiative supporting people experiencing homelessness in rural and coastal areas: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: People experiencing homelessness have often faced both historical and ongoing trauma, which can be compounded by their interactions with different support services. Trauma-informed care aims to meet the complex needs of people who have experienced trauma and prevent re-traumatisation during service interactions. In rural and coastal areas, where services are often geographically dispersed, multi-agency approaches are particularly crucial for ensuring continuous, coordinated support. This study examines the learning from implementing a multi-agency trauma-informed training pilot for

Association between a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus and smoking abstinence: An analysis of the National Health Interview Survey (2006-2018).

OBJECTIVE: Both diabetes and smoking significantly increase the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Understanding whether a diagnosis of diabetes can be leveraged to promote smoking cessation is a gap in the literature. METHODS: We used data from the US National Health Interview Survey, 2006 to 2018, to investigate the relationship between self-report of diagnosis of diabetes and subsequent smoking abstinence among 142,884 respondents who reported regular smoking at baseline. Effect sizes were presented as hazard ratios (HRs) derived from multivariable Cox regression models adjusted for pot

Gender-Specific Differences in Corporal Punishment and Children's Perceptions of Their Mothers' and Fathers' Parenting.

Corporal punishment is a widespread phenomenon and a common malformation of parenting. Gender is a core category of social order and family structure. Gender-specific differences in parenting and violent behavior have been studied for many years. Yet, relatively little is known about the impact of gender interactions on parent-to-child physical violence or the impact of such violence on children's perceptions of their parents' behavior. This study used data collected from 618 students in academic institutions in northern Israel to examine the relationship between different gender interactions
