Microalbuminuria in diabetic patients is associated with ischemic heart disease and insulin resistance. We previously found a 9% prevalence of microalbuminuria in a nondiabetic population that we have reassessed, investigating associations of microalbuminuria with hypertension, dyslipidemia, hyperinsulinemia, and sodium-lithium countertransport. Of 125 subjects reexamined, 42 had been microalbuminuric 3 years previously. OBJECTIVE: To test whether slow-release sodium fluoride inhibits spinal fractures and is safe to use.
DESIGN: Placebo-controlled randomized trial.
INTERVENTIONS: Slow-release sodium fluoride, 25 mg twice daily, in four 14-month cycles (12 months receiving sodium fluoride followed by 2 months not receiving it) compared with placebo. Calcium citrate, 400 mg calcium twice daily, continuously in both groups.
PATIENTS: 48 of 54 patients who received sodium fluoride and 51 of 56 patients who received placebo completed at least 1 year of the study. All patients had postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Patients (459) with chronic gastritis, ulcers, polyposis and different types of gastric cancers were examined by endoscopic fluorescent technique using a special drug based on the sodium salt of fluorescein (F1). Eighty-five percent of gastric cancers showed positive fluorescence. The F1 distribution in the stomach of the rat with induced gastric cancer was examined. In all cases the level of F1 fluorescence in the tumor was higher than in the adjacent normal tissues of the stomach. Thus, all the obtained results confirm the selective accumulation of F1 in tumors of the stomach.

Sodium transport was studied in red cells taken from four groups of patients, whites or blacks, and normotensive or hypertensive, with approximately ten patients in each group. There were no differences between normotensive and hypertensive whites. Normotensive blacks had higher rates of sodium-proton exchange than did the other groups, and hypertensive blacks had higher rates of efflux via the sodium-potassium ATPase than did other groups. These data support proposals that hypertension in black subjects is linked to abnormalities of control of intracellular sodium.

The guinea pigs were dermally exposed to nickel (Ni), sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) and in their combination for 7 and 14 days. The exposure to Ni and SLS produced changes in enzymes and lipid peroxidation in kidney. The exposure to Ni or SLS depicted slight changes while combined exposure to Ni plus SLS exhibited more degenerative changes in kidney. The result of the study suggests that industrial workers and/or populations exposed simultaneously to Ni and SLS produces more damage to kidney.

A multicentre, group comparative open study was carried out on 68 patients to compare the effects of 2% sodium cromoglycate eyedrops and an oral antihistamine, terfenadine, on acute symptoms of seasonal allergic conjunctivitis. We investigated the occurrence of alcoholic autonomic dysfunction in patients with alcoholic cirrhosis in order to define its prevalence and relationship to renal sodium retention.
