Surgical resection of extremely rare primary giant splenic angiomyolipoma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Angiomyolipoma is a benign mesenchymal tumor that develops commonly in the kidney and rarely in other organs. The involvement of the spleen in angiomyolipoma is extremely rare, and only one such case has been reported in the English literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A 27-year-old man presented with adenoid hyperplasia and bilateral palatal tonsillar hyperplasia. During the treatment for adenoid hyperplasia, a 15-cm tumor was detected in the spleen using abdominal ultrasonography and enhanced computed tomography. Soft coral-derived Aspernolide A suppressed non-small cell lung cancer induced osteolytic bone invasion via the c-Fos/NFATC1 signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND: the incidence of distant metastases is over 30% in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. In particular, bone is reported as the most common site of distant metastasis NSCLC. Bone metastases (BM) have a consequence of serious skeletal-related events (SREs) leading to the reduced overall survival (OS) and quality of life of NSCLC patients. Inhibition of osteolytic lesions and regulation crosstalk between metastatic NSCLC cells and bone microenvironment are the key to treating NSCLC. Due to the lack of effective treatments against NSCLC with bone metastasis, screening

Endovascular treatment of aortic stump blow-out after extra-anatomical repair of aortoduodenal fistula: a case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: An aortoduodenal fistula (ADF) is an unusual, but serious complication following surgical or endovascular aortic repair. The optimal treatment for ADF consists of removal of the infected graft with in situ or extra-anatomical repair and is associated with high mortality. Part of this mortality is caused by re-bleeding or aortic stump ruptures. Classical treatment of an aortic stump rupture involves immediate re-laparotomy, removal of infected tissue, aortic stump formation and reinforcement with soft tissue flaps. However, this invasive treatment is often difficult to perform and t

Maresin 1 Promotes Wound Healing and Socket Bone Regeneration for Alveolar Ridge Preservation.

Tooth extraction results in alveolar bone resorption and is accompanied by postoperative swelling and pain. Maresin 1 (MaR1) is a proresolving lipid mediator produced by macrophages during the resolution phase of inflammation, bridging healing and tissue regeneration. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of MaR1 on tooth extraction socket wound healing in a preclinical rat model. The maxillary right first molars of Sprague-Dawley rats were extracted, and gelatin scaffolds were placed into the sockets with or without MaR1. Topical application was also given twice a week until comple

A Case of Fibrolipoma of the Hard Palate.

An extremely rare case of fibrolipoma in the hard palate is presented and discussed with reference to the literature. An 85-year-old woman visited the Tokyo Dental College Chiba hospital in September 2016 with the chief complaint of a mass in the hard palate. The patient had first become aware of this mass several years earlier. An examination at another hospital in June 2009 resulted in a clinical diagnosis of lipoma. Regular examinations followed every 6 months until September 2014, at which time she stopped attending these appointments because there was no change. In August 2016, however, t

Tracking tendon fibers to their insertion - a 3D analysis of the Achilles tendon enthesis in mice.

Tendon insertions to bone are heavily loaded transitions between soft and hard tissues. The fiber courses in the tendon have profound effects on the distribution of stress along and across the insertion. We tracked fibers of the Achilles tendon in mice in micro-computed tomographies and extracted virtual transversal sections. The fiber tracks and shapes were analyzed from a position in the free tendon to the insertion. Mechanically relevant parameters were extracted. The fiber number was found to stay about constant along the tendon. But the fiber cross-sectional areas decrease towards the ins

Neck CT angiography examinations for pediatric oropharyngeal trauma: diagnostic yield and proposal of a new targeted technique.

BACKGROUND: Neck computed tomography (CT) angiography is commonly ordered for pediatric patients with soft palate trauma to exclude vascular injury. Debate exists regarding what type of imaging is indicated in this setting, particularly amid growing concern that standard neck CT angiography results in considerable radiation exposure. OBJECTIVE: To assess the diagnostic yield and estimated dose reduction of a novel targeted protocol extending from the skull base to the hyoid bone to evaluate pediatric oropharyngeal trauma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective imaging and medical chart revie

[Biomechanika osteosyntézy periprotetických zlomenin femuru po aloplastice kyčelního kloubu].

Periprosthetic femoral fractures around the femoral stem of a hip prosthesis constitute a serious challenge. The number of these fractures, associated with a high failure rate and a high number of overall complications, including higher mortality, has been on an increase worldwide. Stable femoral stems are indicated for osteosynthesis, while in case of loosening the method of choice is the replacement by a revision implant. The aim of osteosynthesis of periprosthetic femoral fractures is a stable fixation with soft tissue preservation which results in faster union allowing the patient to retur

Synchrotron microtomography applied to the volumetric analysis of internal structures of Thoropa miliaris tadpoles.

Amphibians are models for studying applied ecological issues such as habitat loss, pollution, disease, and global climate change due to their sensitivity and vulnerability to changes in the environment. Developmental series of amphibians are informative about their biology, and X-ray based 3D reconstruction holds promise for quantifying morphological changes during growth-some with a direct impact on the possibility of an experimental investigation on several of the ecological topics listed above. However, 3D resolution and discrimination of their soft tissues have been difficult with traditio

Abscess of the clivus in an adolescent with complicated acute rhinosinusitis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Complications of acute sinusitis affecting multiple sites are very uncommon, and generally develop for a delayed diagnosis of the primary infection, with possible severe and life-threatening evolution. Patients can have variable presentations according to the site and extent of the infection. Multiple forms generally include the coexistence of orbital manifestations and intracranial infections. We here present a case with unusual multiple sites locations (i.e.: intraorbital intraconic abscess, sigmoid sinus thrombosis, preclival abscess, multiple splanchnocranium osteomyelitic proc

Shoulder mechanical impingement risk associated with manual wheelchair tasks in individuals with spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND: Most individuals with spinal cord injury who use manual wheelchairs experience shoulder pain related to wheelchair use, potentially in part from mechanical impingement of soft tissue structures within the subacromial space. There is evidence suggesting that scapula and humerus motion during certain wheelchair tasks occurs in directions that may reduce the subacromial space, but it hasn't been thoroughly characterized in this context. METHODS: Shoulder motion was imaged and quantified during scapular plane elevation with/without handheld load, propulsion with/without added resistan
