The primary laryngeal atypical carcinoid is relatively rare, and the tumor combined with other histologic types including squamous cell carcinoma is extremely rare. We aim to communicate the experience gathered during the management of infections by atypical mycobacteria in immunocompetent patients in a general practice. Between 2008 and 2013, 5 patients with non-tuberculous mycobacterial infections were identified: 2 with cutaneous involvement and 3 with lung infection. BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health problem. In 2013, 9 million new cases of active TB were estimated globally and the proportion of reported new cases with multi-drug resistance (MDR) was 3.5%.

Although the multi-copy and specific element IS6110 provides a good target for the detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex by PCR techniques, the emergence of IS6110-negative strains suggested that false negative may occur if IS6110 alone is used as the target for detection. In this report, a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (mPCR) system was developed using primers derived from the insertion sequence IS6110 and an IS-like elements designated as B9 (GenBank accession no. U78639.1) to overcome the problem of detecting negative or low copy IS6110 containing strains of M. tuberculosis.

A retrospective study was made of 75 patients with tuberculosis and tuberculous pleurisy who received medical care in our hospital from 2002 through 2006. Of the 75 patients, 9 were admitted as tertiary emergency cases, and 12 patients were admitted by ambulance as secondary emergency cases. We studied the reason for their emergency medical admission, and the process of diagnosing 21 patients as tuberculosis.
