Symptom characteristics of health care workers seeking outpatient psychiatric care during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Though there is a growing body of research establishing a broad negative psychological impact of COVID-19 among healthcare workers (HCWs), there are comparably fewer studies evaluating symptom presentation and clinical diagnoses among treatment-seeking HCWs. The present report seeks to fill this gap in the literature by establishing the prevalence of anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, alcohol misuse, and well-being among treatment-seeking HCWs. METHOD: Data were collected from 421 treatment-seeking HCWs in an outpatient hospital-based mental health setting. Both self-repo

The impact of traumatic experiences, coping mechanisms, and workplace benefits on the mental health of U.S. public health workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the association between risk factors, mitigating factors, and adverse mental health outcomes among United States public health workers. METHODS: Cross-sectional online survey data were collected March to April 2021. The survey was distributed to public health workers who worked in a state, tribal, local, or territorial public health department since March 2020. RESULTS: In total, 26,174 United States state and local public health workers completed the survey. Feeling isolated was a risk factor for anxiety (PR, 1.84; 95% CI, 1.74-1.95), depression (PR, 1.84; 95% CI, 1.75-

Post-Injection Delirium/Sedation Syndrome: A Case Report and 2-Year Follow-Up.

BACKGROUND Long-acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotics are one of the forms of therapy for severe mental illness. Post-injection delirium/sedation syndrome (PDSS) is a very rare but serious adverse effect following the application of an olanzapine in a long-acting form. The most common symptoms of the syndrome are sedation, delirium, dysarthria, ataxia, extrapyramidal symptoms, agitation, dizziness, or seizure. The predispositions, prevention, and exact mechanism of PDSS remain unclear. CASE REPORT We present a case report of a 30-year-old male patient experiencing PDSS, including the main sym

Mental health among transgender women living with HIV in Canada: findings from a national community-based research study.

Antiretroviral therapy adherence among transgender (trans) women living with HIV (WLWH) is negatively impacted by depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Yet, little is known about factors associated with depression or PTSD among trans WLWH. Using cross-sectional data from a national community-based study of 1422 WLWH (n = 53 trans women), we characterized the prevalence of depressive and PTSD symptoms among trans WLWH and examined associations between factors (e.g., Trans stigma) and depressive and PTSD symptoms. Nearly half of participants reported clinically significant PTSD (

Italian validation of the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form on a college group.

UNLABELLED: The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ-SF) is the most widely used measure of childhood traumatic experiences for the retrospective assessment of adolescents and adults. It facilitates the detection of co-occurrence of traumas during childhood, in effect overcoming the lack of standardized tools for adult assessment. OBJECTIVE: The current study aimed to validate the Italian Childhood Trauma Questionnaire on college students. On this scope, we compared several factor structures proposed in the literature by the original authors (Bernstein et al., 2003), as well as in c

Early and Persistent Dendritic Hypertrophy in the Basolateral Amygdala following Experimental Diffuse Traumatic Brain Injury.

In the pathophysiology of traumatic brain injury (TBI), the amygdala remains understudied, despite involvement in processing emotional and stressful stimuli associated with anxiety disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Because the basolateral amygdala (BLA) integrates inputs from sensory and other limbic structures coordinating emotional learning and memory, injury-induced changes in circuitry may contribute to psychiatric sequelae of TBI. This study quantified temporal changes in dendritic complexity of BLA neurons after experimental diffuse TBI, modeled by midline fluid p

Examining sexual orientation disparities in alcohol misuse among women veterans.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol misuse is a significant health concern among women veterans, especially among lesbian and bisexual veterans. Mediators that might explain alcohol disparities between heterosexual and sexual minority veterans have not yet been identified. PURPOSE: To examine the role of civilian and military traumas and mental health symptoms (i.e., depression, post-traumatic stress disorder) in explaining sexual orientation disparities in alcohol misuse between sexual minority and heterosexual women veterans across the U.S. METHODS: Women veterans were recruited using Internet methods to

The phenomenology and course of depression in parentally bereaved and non-bereaved youth.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the phenomenology and course of bereavement-related depression to depression that occurred later in the course of bereavement and to depression in non-bereaved youth. METHOD: This sample is drawn from a cohort of parentally bereaved youth and non-bereaved controls followed for approximately 5 years. Three groups of depressed youth were compared with respect to symptoms, severity, duration, risk for recurrence, and correlates and risk factors: (1) a group with bereavement-related depression (BRD, n = 42), with the onset of a depressive episode within the first 2 months af

Association Between Work Stress and Sleep Disorders in Law Enforcement: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Law enforcement personnel face diverse occupational stressors, including shift work, organizational pressure, operational demands, and traumatic incidents. Previous systematic reviews have primarily focused on prevalence estimates of sleep disturbances, whereas the strength of the association with occupational stress and the relative contribution of distinct stressor domains remain to be systematically quantified. METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines and was registered with PROSPERO (CRD420261284369). Four databases (PubMed, Cochrane Li

Mental Health Outcomes After Neurocritical Care: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we sought to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of mental health outcomes in survivors of neurocritical illness. METHODS: Literature databases [PubMed, Embase, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), and PsycInfo] were searched for terms relating to critical illness, intensive care, and outcomes from January 1970 to June 2024. English-language studies of adults with critically illness with a primary neurological diagnosis were included if they reported on mental health outcomes [specifically, depression, anxiety, post-traumat

Temporal Trajectories of Motor and Cognitive Dysfunction After Combined PTSD and TBI in Mice: Implications for Neurodegenerative Disease Vulnerability.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) commonly occurs alongside Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), yet the chronic behavioral consequences of combined neurotrauma (i.e., PTSD and TBI) across the sexes remain unclear. Using a mouse model combining Single Prolonged Stress (SPS) as a model for PTSD and Controlled Cortical Impact (CCI) as a model for TBI, we assessed gait, anxiety-like behavior, and contextual fear learning and extinction at 2, 4, and 12-weeks post-injury. Combined neurotrauma produced early and persistent gait impairments in both sexes, delayed changes to anxiety-like behavior charact

Sleep Power Spectral Density and Spindles in PTSD and Their Relationship to Symptom Severity.

Sleep disturbances are common in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), although which sleep microarchitectural characteristics reliably classify those with and without PTSD remains equivocal. Here, we investigated sleep microarchitectural differences (i.e., spectral power, spindle activity) in trauma-exposed individuals that met (n = 45) or did not meet (n = 52) criteria for PTSD and how these differences relate to post-traumatic and related psychopathological symptoms. Using ecologically-relevant home sleep polysomnography recordings, we show that individuals with PTSD exhibit decreased beta

Mild blast-related TBI in a mouse model alters amygdalar neurostructure and circuitry.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) continues to be a signature injury of our modern conflicts. Due in part to increased use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs), we have seen blast trauma make up a significant portion of TBIs sustained by deployed troops and civilians. In addition to the physical injury, TBI is also a common comorbidity with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Previous research suggests that PTSD is often associated with increased signaling within the amygdala, leading to feelings of fear and hyperarousal. In our study, we utilized a mouse model of mild blast-related TBI (bTBI)

[Nightmares and psychopathology].

Nightmares are long frightening dreams, quite common in psychiatric and general population; they may cause psychological distress and social or occupational dysfunction and are the most common form of parasomnia. They can be divided into post-traumatic nightmares, which are part of post-traumatic stress reaction, idiopathic and stress-induced. This article is a review of studies evaluating the relationship between nightmares and psychopathology, especially in regard to their intensity and content. For example, prepsychotic patients often report nightmares, particularly of body fragmentation an

Psychosocial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on 4378 UK healthcare workers and ancillary staff: initial baseline data from a cohort study collected during the first wave of the pandemic.

OBJECTIVES: This study reports preliminary findings on the prevalence of, and factors associated with, mental health and well-being outcomes of healthcare workers during the early months (April-June) of the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK. METHODS: Preliminary cross-sectional data were analysed from a cohort study (n=4378). Clinical and non-clinical staff of three London-based NHS Trusts, including acute and mental health Trusts, took part in an online baseline survey. The primary outcome measure used is the presence of probable common mental disorders (CMDs), measured by the General Health Quest

Omega-3 fatty acids in mental disorders: from neurobiological and metabolic mechanisms to therapeutic potential.

Nutritional psychiatry is an emerging field. Micro- and macro-nutrients play a role in energy metabolism and the regulation of inflammation; particularly, an insufficient dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids and an imbalanced intake of omega-6/omega-3 fatty acids, with a shift toward increased inflammation, are of relevance for the pathophysiology of mental disorders. This review summarizes evidence on the role of omega-3 fatty acids in the pathophysiology of mental disorders (schizophrenia, affective and anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, and eating disorders), neurodevelopme

Investigating the impact of serotonergic psychedelic drugs, MDMA and ketamine on social cognition in psychiatric disorders: A scoping review.

RATIONALE: Interest in psychedelic drugs has increased rapidly because of their potential therapeutic role in psychiatric disorders. Impairments in the sociocognitive skills needed to build and maintain social relationships are prominent features of many psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders. Emerging evidence suggests that compounds such as 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), and psilocybin may influence these impairments. OBJECTIVES: This review aimed to determine whether psychedelic drugs may modulate social cognition in individuals with psych

Dissociative and traumatic experiences in people with eating disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The review synthesizes existing literature on the prevalence, assessment, and treatment of dissociation, focusing on its manifestation in eating disorders. The review explores various conceptualizations of dissociation, its relationship with trauma, and its role in emotion regulation. RECENT FINDINGS: Dissociation is a complex psychological process ranging from mild detachment to severe identity fragmentation. Everyday experiences like daydreaming or losing track of time are common examples of dissociation. More severe dissociative experiences are present in dissociative di

Mendelian randomization analyses reveal causal relationships between brain functional networks and risk of psychiatric disorders.

Dysfunction of brain resting-state functional networks has been widely reported in psychiatric disorders. However, the causal relationships between brain resting-state functional networks and psychiatric disorders remain largely unclear. Here we perform bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses to investigate the causalities between 191 resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) phenotypes (n = 34,691 individuals) and 12 psychiatric disorders (n = 14,307 to 698,672 individuals). Forward MR identified 8 rsfMRI phenotypes causally associated with the risk o
