BACKGROUND & PURPOSE –: Late radiation-associated dysphagia after head and neck cancer (HNC) significantly impacts patient's health and quality of life. Conventional normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) models use discrete dose parameters to predict toxicity risk but fail to fully capture the complexity of this side effect. Deep learning (DL) offers potential improvements by incorporating 3D dose data for all anatomical structures involved in swallowing. This study aims to enhance dysphagia prediction with 3D DL NTCP models compared to conventional NTCP models.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of dysphagia has been increasing over the years, with some individuals at a greater risk. Social determinants of health (SDOH) can affect some individual's access to care and their health more than others. The objective of this study is to explore the role of SDOH on self-reported dysphagia in older adults (aged 65 years and older) living in the United States.
METHOD: The 2022 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) is a database that collects health information of over 35,000 individuals across the United States. A secondary cross-sectional data analysis determin

Background/Objectives: Swallowing disorder(s), or oropharyngeal dysphagia (OPD), are very common in children with cerebral palsy (CP) and pose a significant risk to their health. Behavioural interventions are frequently recommended when targeting OPD in children with CP; however, their efficacy has yet to be determined. This systematic review aimed to synthesise the current evidence for behavioural interventions in the treatment of OPD in children with CP. Methods: A comprehensive search in six databases in October 2024 sought studies that (1) included participants aged 0-18 years with a diagn

Background/Objectives: Enteric coating protects active pharmaceutical ingredients from gastric degradation, but conventional tablets may present swallowing difficulties in geriatric and pediatric patients. Hence, this study intended to develop pH-responsive multiparticulates, formulated into orally disintegrating tablets (ODTs), for targeted intestinal drug delivery in individuals with dysphagia. Methods: Multiparticulates were developed via sequential seal coating, drug layering, sub-coating, and enteric coating on inert cores using a fluidized bed coater (Pam Glatt, India; bottom spray). Dysphagia drives morbidity and mortality in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), yet staging systems treat it as a binary milestone and do not capture its trajectory. Reports diverge on the earliest abnormality, with some citing cohesive-bolus inefficiency and others thin-liquid impairment. Furthermore, how these findings relate to patient-perceived dysphagia remains unclear. In a prospective cohort, 78 incident ALS patients underwent one or more fiberoptic endoscopic evaluations of swallowing (FEES), yielding 108 assessments. Pharyngeal residue for four consistencies was rated with a validate

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Radiation-induced aspiration is a serious complication following (chemo)radiation for head and neck cancer. The standard set of swallowing organs at risk (SWOARs) does not include all aspiration-related organs (OARs). An alternative proposed in earlier work includes a definition and delineation atlas for additional OARs, called Functional Swallowing Units (FSU). The purpose of this study was to compare two NTCP models for late aspiration, based on either SWOARs only or the FSU concept.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Data from 189 patients were analysed. Aspiration at baseline

BACKGROUND: Neo-left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction is a dreaded complication following transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR). Dynamic LVOT obstruction has been reported to cause mechanical intravascular haemolysis due to red cell fragmentation. Intravascular haemolysis can result in a rare but well-described phenomenon in which patients experience dysphagia due to oesophageal spasm. This phenomenon is classically associated with paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria and has never been reported following TMVR.

BACKGROUND: Double aortic arch (DAA) with type B aortic dissection in adults is a rare aortic vascular disease. The abnormal anatomical structure of the aortic arch in such patients presents significant challenges in the selection of surgical approaches, and there is a notable lack of exploration into endovascular repair approaches that simultaneously preserve asymptomatic vascular rings.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 43-year-old female patient was admitted due to recurrent chest and back pain lasting for over a month. Computed tomography angiography (CTA) indicated a double aortic arch anomaly with lo

Numerous studies have explored the use of repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) intervention in post-stroke dysphagia. The primary aim of this umbrella review was to appraise the methodological quality of systematic reviews (SRs), with and without meta-analyses (MAs), that synthesized the findings of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) exploring the effectiveness of rTMS in the management of dysphagia post-stroke. A secondary aim of was to evaluate the consistency and reliability of translational implications of rTMS for swallowing recovery after stroke across these SRs and MAs.

BACKGROUND: Swallowing is a complex function that requires precise coordination between different muscles. Weakness in submental muscles can lead to complications such as pharyngeal residue and aspiration. Therefore, exercise interventions targeting these muscles, such as the Head-Lift Exercise (HLE), are clinically important but pose challenges.
OBJECTIVE(S): This study aimed to compare the myoelectric activity of submental muscles during traditional Head-Lift Exercise (HLE), Tongue-Press Exercise (TPE) and Head Extension Tongue-Press Exercise (HETPE), providing potential alternatives to HLE
