In recent years, the prevalence of pseudorabies virus (PRV) has caused huge economic losses to the Chinese pig industry. Meanwhile, PRV infection in humans also sounded the alarm about its cross-species transmission from pigs to humans. To study the regional PRV epidemic, serological and epidemiological investigations of PRV in pig populations from Yunnan Province during 2017-2021 were performed. The results showed that 31.37% (6324/20,158, 95% CI 30.73-32.01) of serum samples were positive for PRV glycoprotein E (gE)-specific antibodies via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The risk

BACKGROUND: Atypical porcine pestivirus (APPV) is a single-stranded RNA virus with high genetic variation that causes congenital tremor (CT) in newborn piglets, belonging to the genus Pestivirus of the family Flaviviridae. Increasing cases of APPV infection in China in the past few years would pose severe challenges to the development of pig production. In view of the high genetic variability of APPV, the genetic characteristics of APPV in Hubei province was determined.
METHODS: 52 tissue samples from 8 CT-affected newborn piglets were collected at two different periods in the same pig farm i

Reducing the risk of Salmonella contaminated pork products entering the food chain is important for improving food safety. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the short-duration use of three acidified feed interventions in finisher pigs for reducing the faecal shedding, caecal carriage and carcase contamination of Salmonella at slaughter. We also investigated the presence of Salmonella in transportation vehicles and abattoir lairages used prior to slaughter. In a series of seven farm trials, two groups of pigs received either their normal ration (control), or a ration containing

Cryptosporidium spp. is recognized as an opportunistic zoonotic parasite that infects humans, wild and domestic animals, and is also a major cause of diarrhea-related disease in immunocompromised individuals, considered a global public health concern. Pig is considered as one of the reservoir hosts of Cryptosporidium spp. can transmit cryptosporidiosis to humans and other animals. However, limited studies on the distribution of Cryptosporidium spp. in diarrheic pigs have been published. Objective of the current study was to investigate the infection and species/genotypes of Cryptosporidium spp

Toxoplasma gondii is an important foodborne pathogen worldwide, with undercooked meat as the main source of human transmission. In this study, we determined the seroprevalence of T. gondii in free-range pigs from two adjacent villages in the Tumbes region of northern Peru, El Tutumo and Nuevo Progreso. We randomly selected 100 pig serum samples collected during a prior study and processed these using Western Blot to detect IgG anti-T. gondii antibodies. Results indicated a prevalence of 32% (32/100) to T. gondii in pigs. Free-ranging pigs from northern Peru represent a substantial risk for tra

Acellular dermal matrix grafts (ADMG) have been used as soft tissue graft substitutes for autografts in periodontal plastic surgical procedures. They have benefits like avoiding a second surgical site and patient morbidity that have been associated with autografts, but there is limited evidence available on their tissue response and wound healing process. This histomorphometric animal model study was carried out in mini pigs and it aimed to compare the two types of ADMG materials of porcine derivative with a control group through observation of parameters like epithelial and Keratinized layer

Pig farming performs as an intricate part in the socio-economic situation in the north-eastern region of India. This region contributes 38% (3.95 million) of total pigs in India. In spite of this, the region unables to flourish as an enterprise as per the expectation due to a low productivity rate. Porcine infectious pathogens like porcine cirovirus2 (PCV2) and porcine parvovirus (PPV) have a direct economic impact on pig farming through slow growth rate, abortion, and mortality and ultimately maximize the production cost by increasing the usage of antibiotic or antiviral drugs. The veterinary

The recently identified causative agent of congenital tremor in domestic piglets, atypical porcine pestivirus (APPV), was detected in serum from Swedish wild boar. A previous study from Sweden described APPV in domestic piglets suffering from congenital tremor, but the APPV situation in the wild boar population was unknown. In this study, 595 serum samples from wild boar originating from 13 counties in the south and central parts of Sweden, collected between 2000 and 2018, were analysed for the presence of the APPV-genome and for antibodies against the APPV-glycoprotein Erns . The results reve

The present study used intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) piglets as an animal model to determine the effect of Bacillus subtilis on intestinal integrity, antioxidant capacity, and microbiota in the jejunum of suckling piglets. In total, 8 normal birth weight (NBW) newborn piglets (1.62 ± 0.10 kg) and 16 newborn IUGR piglets (0.90 ± 0.08 kg) were selected and assigned to three groups. Piglets were orally gavaged with 10-mL sterile saline (NBW and IUGR groups), and IUGR piglets were orally gavaged with 10-mL/d bacterial fluid (B. subtilis diluted in sterile saline, gavage in the dose of 2 ×

Cardiac patches can help to restore the electrophysiological properties of the heart after myocardial infarction. However, scaffolds for the repair of heart muscle typically require surgical implantation or, if they are injectable, they are not electrically conductive or do not maintain their shape or function. Here, we report the performance, as demonstrated for the repair of infarcted heart muscle in rats and minipigs, of injectable and conductive scaffolds consisting of methacrylated elastin and gelatin, and carbon nanotubes that display shape-memory behaviour, a hierarchical porous structu

Atypical porcine pestivirus (APPV) is a cause of congenital tremors (CTs) in piglets and has been found in swine populations around the globe. Although systemic distribution of the virus has been reported, there is limited information regarding viral localization at the cellular level and distribution at the tissue level. We collected multiple tissues from 2-d-old piglets (n = 36) born to sows inoculated at 45 or 62 d of gestation with APPV via 3 simultaneous routes: intravenous, intranasal, and directly in amniotic vesicles. In addition, 2 boars from APPV-inoculated sows with CT were raised a…

The first case of myiasis caused by Lucilia caesar (L.) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in a wild boar, Sus scrofa L. (Artiodactyla: Suidae) is described. The myiasis occurred in October 2019 in Southern Italy and the identification of the agent was based on adult male morphology. The wild boar had a wound on its right side, near the neck, which was largely infested by larvae. The ecology, distribution and current literature status about cases of animal myiasis by this species is also included.

Aujeszky's disease (AD, pseudorabies) eradication programs in domestic pigs are implemented in several European countries where AD virus (ADV) circulates in local wild boar (Sus scrofa), making studies on ADV infection dynamics in wild boar increasingly relevant. The objective of our study was to characterize ADV dynamics in wild boar at a site in central Portugal and compare this site to three enzootic sites in central Spain. A total of 235 wild boar were sampled during the hunting season 2014-15. We collected serum, tissues (oropharyngeal tonsils and trigeminal and sacral ganglia), and swabs

Porcine proliferative enteropathy (PPE) is caused by the obligate intracellular bacterium Lawsonia intracellularis. Infection results in an enteric disease characterised by decreased growth performance of pigs, and presents a major economic burden for swine industries worldwide. Since vaccination is an effective technique for controlling PPE, novel effective vaccine platforms are need to be developed. In this study, five proteins of L. intracellularis were screened through animal experiments and the highly immunoprotective Omp2 protein was identified. Then, the immune efficacy of Omp2 was furt…

Inflammation and loss of tail integrity can be reasons for serious impairment of animal welfare and one of the major challenges facing modern pig farming. Evidence from practice increasingly suggests that tail lesions might be caused not only by tail biting but also by inflammation and necrosis, which can occur without any action from other pigs. Such changes are not limited to the tail but can also be observed in the ears, heels and soles, claw coronary bands, teats, navel, vulva and face. To describe inflammatory and necrotic manifestations in newborn piglets, all 146 piglets from 11 sows we
