Anxious and nonanxious mice show similar hippocampal sensory evoked oscillations under urethane anesthesia: difference in the effect of buspirone.

Hippocampal oscillations recorded under urethane anesthesia are proposed to be modulated by anxiolytics. All classes of clinically effective anxiolytics were reported to decrease the frequency of urethane theta; however, recent findings raise concerns about the direct correlation of anxiolysis and the frequency of hippocampal theta. Here, we took advantage of our two inbred mouse strains displaying extremes of anxiety (anxious (AX) and nonanxious (nAX)) to compare the properties of hippocampal activity and to test the effect of an anxiolytic drugs. No difference was observed in the peak freque

Behavioral differences in an elevated plus-maze: correlation between anxiety and decreased number of GABA and benzodiazepine receptors in mouse cerebral cortex.

In an elevated plus-maze model of anxiety mice treated with the benzodiazepine inverse agonist DMCM (0.5-1.5 mg/kg i.p.) spent significantly less time on the open arms and showed the decreased number of open arm entries. The opposite i.e. increased time spent on the open arms and the higher number of open arm entries was registered after diazepam (1.5 mg/kg). The results are consistent with the results obtained in the other animal tests and support the idea that this procedure is suitable for detecting anxiolytic/anxiogenic effects of benzodiazepine receptor ligands. After testing of 84 mice i

The mediating role of anxiety and depressive symptoms on the relationship between physical limitations and cognitive impairment among older adults in China: differences based on religious perspective.

BACKGROUND: Physical limitationsand mental health may have a common effect on cognitive function. However, little is known about how religion influences these paths among older Chinese adults. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated how anxiety and depressive symptoms mediate the association between physical limitations and cognitive impairment. Furthermore, we analyzed discrepancies in path models between participants with or without religious beliefs. METHODS: This population-based, cross-sectional study involved 6,656 adults aged ≥ 60 years in six cities in Guangdong Province, China. Participa

Effects of Virtual Reality Hypnosis on Pain and Anxiety in Oncology Patients During Port-a-Catheter Placement Procedure: A Pilot Study.

Background: Port-a-catheter (PAC) placement is a common procedure in oncology that, despite local anaesthesia, can induce patient discomfort, procedural pain, and anxiety. Virtual reality hypnosis (VRH), combining immersive virtual reality with clinical hypnosis, has been proposed as a non-pharmacological adjunct to reduce peri-procedural distress. Objectives: This pilot study aimed to explore the suitability of VRH during PAC placement and its potential effects on pain, anxiety, and VRH-related experiences, while investigating psychological variables associated with VRH engagement. Methods: I

Effectiveness of mindfulness-based stress reduction in managing fatigue, anxiety, and depression among non-small cell lung cancer patients receiving surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients undergoing surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy often experience debilitating physical and psychological symptoms, including cancer-related fatigue, anxiety, and depression. Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) has emerged as a complementary intervention to alleviate these burdens and enhance quality of life, but evidence in NSCLC populations remains limited. METHODS: This randomized controlled trial enrolled 80 NSCLC patients, evenly divided into an MBSR group and a Control group. The MBSR group underwent an 8-week mindfulness program

Salivary Stress Biomarkers (Chromogranin A and Secretory IgA): Associations with Anxiety and Depressive Symptoms in Healthcare Professionals.

Background/Objectives: Shift-working healthcare professionals are exposed to high psychophysiological demands associated with occupational stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. Salivary chromogranin A (sCgA) and secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) are non-invasive biomarkers reflecting sympathetic nervous system activation and mucosal immune function, respectively, and are increasingly used to assess biological stress responses. This study examined changes in these biomarkers and their associations with anxiety and depression. Methods: This cross-sectional comparative observational study was

The Use of Melatoninergic Antidepressants for Stabilization of Remission in Depression Comorbid with Alcohol Abuse, Anxiety or Neuropsychiatric Disorders: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Depression is one of the most common mental disorders and is associated with a significant increase in the risk of mental and somatic comorbidities. The chronobiological theory of the pathogenesis of depression explains the relationship between the symptoms of depression and disturbance of circadian rhythm regulation. Disrupted circadian rhythms are also observed in other disorders such as alcohol use disorder, anxiety disorders, epilepsy, and Parkinson's disease. Therefore, there is a growing interest in the use of medications with a melatoninergic mechanism of action in the treat

Prevalence of post-traumatic stress and tests of metacognition as a PTSD risk marker in patients with coronary heart disease and elevated HADS scores: analysis of data from the PATHWAY RCT's in UK cardiac rehabilitation.

INTRODUCTION: Anxiety and depression in coronary heart disease (CHD) are associated with poorer health outcomes, greater healthcare use and reduced quality of life. Post-traumatic stress symptoms may be a particular concern as they are associated with increased mortality at follow-up. We examined prevalence of PTSD in patients with elevated anxiety/depression scores referred for cardiac rehabilitation (CR) across seven NHS sites in North-West England. We tested a possible mechanism (metacognition) linking CHD to PTSD symptom severity as implicated in the metacognitive model. METHODS: Data was

Medical student anxiety and depression in the COVID-19 Era: Unique needs of underrepresented students.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant morbidity, mortality, and mental health consequences. Few studies have examined the mental toll of COVID-19 on United States (US) medical students, who experience greater rates of depression and anxiety than the general population. Students who identify as underrepresented in medicine (URM) may experience even greater mental health adversities than non-URM peers. This study examines COVID-19's impact on preclinical medical student anxiety and depression and unique challenges disproportionately affecting URM students during the initial ph

Stressful Life Events and Resilience During the COVID-19 Lockdown Measures in Italy: Association With Mental Health Outcomes and Age.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic, due to its disproportionated higher morbidity and mortality rates in the older age, has been considered to be a "geropandemic." Several studies, however, have found that older age is associated with lower psychological distress in relation to the COVID-19 outbreak and related lockdown measures. Aim: To explore the role of Resilience as a mediator between stressful COVID-19 related life events and depressive and, anxiety symptoms and perceived stress, and to ascertain the role of age as a moderator of the mediator's effect. Methods: An on-line survey was sprea

Salivary cortisol levels and anxiety in melanoma patients undergoing sentinel lymph node excision under local anesthesia versus general anesthesia: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Sentinel lymph node excision (SLNE) can be performed in tumescent local anesthesia (TLA) or general anesthesia (GA). Perioperative cortisol level changes and anxiety are common in surgical interventions and might be influenced by the type of anesthesia. In this study, we intended to determine whether the type of anesthesia impacts the patients' perioperative levels of salivary cortisol (primary outcome) and the feeling of anxiety evaluated by psychological questionnaires (secondary outcome). METHODS: All melanoma patients of age undergoing SLNE at the University Hospital Essen, Ge

Perceived fairness of algorithmic decision-making and university teachers' job burnout: a moderated chain-mediation model.

As big data and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies become embedded in the governance of higher education, algorithmic decision-making has improved managerial efficiency but has also led teachers to question the fairness of evaluation and to face difficulties in psychological adaptation, making job burnout an increasingly salient concern. How perceived fairness of algorithmic decision-making (FAD) relates to university teachers' job burnout, and through what psychological mechanism, remains unclear. Drawing on the transactional theory of stress and organizational support theory, we built
