Longitudinal Changes of Bruch's Membrane Opening, Anterior Scleral Canal Opening, and Border Tissue in Experimental Juvenile High Myopia.

PURPOSE: To investigate the relative positional changes between the Bruch's membrane opening (BMO) and the anterior scleral canal opening (ASCO), and border tissue configuration changes during experimental high myopia development in juvenile tree shrews. METHODS: Juvenile tree shrews were assigned randomly to two groups: binocular normal vision (n = 9) and monocular -10 D lens treatment starting at 24 days of visual experience to induce high myopia in one eye while the other eye served as control (n = 12). Refractive and biometric measurements were obtained daily, and 48 radial optical cohere

Artifact-Tolerant Clustering-Guided Contrastive Embedding Learning for Ophthalmic Images in Glaucoma.

Ophthalmic images, along with their derivatives like retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness maps, play a crucial role in detecting and monitoring eye diseases such as glaucoma. For computer-aided diagnosis of eye diseases, the key technique is to automatically extract meaningful features from ophthalmic images that can reveal the biomarkers (e.g., RNFL thinning patterns) associated with functional vision loss. However, representation learning from ophthalmic images that links structural retinal damage with human vision loss is non-trivial mostly due to large anatomical variations between p

Prior optic neuritis detection on peripapillary ring scans using deep learning.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) requires demyelinating events that are disseminated in time and space. Peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) thickness as measured by optical coherence tomography (OCT) distinguishes eyes with a prior history of acute optic neuritis (ON) and may provide evidence to support a demyelinating attack. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether a deep learning (DL)-based network can distinguish between eyes with prior ON and healthy control (HC) eyes using peripapillary ring scans. METHODS: We included 1033 OCT scans from 415 healthy eyes (213

Diagnostic assessment of glaucoma and non-glaucomatous optic neuropathies via optical texture analysis of the retinal nerve fibre layer.

The clinical diagnostic evaluation of optic neuropathies relies on the analysis of the thickness of the retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) by optical coherence tomography (OCT). However, false positives and false negatives in the detection of RNFL abnormalities are common. Here we show that an algorithm integrating measurements of RNFL thickness and reflectance from standard wide-field OCT scans can be used to uncover the trajectories and optical texture of individual axonal fibre bundles in the retina and to discern distinctive patterns of loss of axonal fibre bundles in glaucoma, compressive o

Assessment of retinal nerve fiber thickness and optic nerve head blood flow in female patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia syndrome.

PURPOSE: Numerous neuroimaging and ophthalmic studies suggest optic nerve involvement in fi-bromyalgia syndrome. To further elucidate the etiopathogenesis of fibromyalgia syndrome, we compared optic nerve head blood flow area and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness between patients and controls and investigated the associations of these measures with fibromyalgia syndrome severity. METHODS: Participants were divided into the following three groups according to Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire score: mild-moderate fibromyalgia syndrome (Group 1, n=47), severe fibromyalgia syndrome (Group 2, n

Clinical characteristics of glaucoma patients with various risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is multifactorial, but the interrelationship between risk factors and structural changes remains unclear. Here, we adjusted for confounding factors in glaucoma patients with differing risk factors, and compared differences in structure and susceptible areas in the optic disc and macula. METHODS: In 458 eyes with glaucoma, we determined confounding factors for intraocular pressure (IOP), central corneal thickness (CCT), axial length (AL), LSFG-measured ocular blood flow (OBF), which was assessed with laser speckle flowgraphy-measured mean blur rate in the tissue area (MT)

Quantification of Optic Nerve Cross Sectional Area on MRI: A Novel Protocol using Fiji Software.

Optic nerve assessment is an important aspect of glaucoma diagnosis and follow-up. This project describes a protocol for a unified methodology of optic nerve cross-sectional assessment and quantification using 3 T MRI for image acquisition and ImageJ's Fiji software for image processing quantification. Image acquisition was performed using 3 T MRI, with proper instructions for the patient to ensure straight fixation during imaging. A T2-weighted fat suppressed sequence was used. A coronal cut taken 3 mm behind the globe and perpendicular to the optic nerve axis should be uploaded to the softwa

Clinical review of retinotopy.

Two observations made 29 years apart are the cornerstones of this review on the contributions of Dr Gordon T. Plant to understanding pathology affecting the optic nerve. The first observation laid the anatomical basis in 1990 for the interpretation of optical coherence tomography (OCT) findings in 2009. Retinal OCT offers clinicians detailed in vivo structural imaging of individual retinal layers. This has led to novel observations which were impossible to make using ophthalmoscopy. The technique also helps to re-introduce the anatomically grounded concept of retinotopy to clinical practise. T

A Deep-Learning Approach for Automated OCT En-Face Retinal Vessel Segmentation in Cases of Optic Disc Swelling Using Multiple En-Face Images as Input.

PURPOSE: In cases of optic disc swelling, segmentation of projected retinal blood vessels from optical coherence tomography (OCT) volumes is challenging due to swelling-based shadowing artifacts. Based on our hypothesis that simultaneously considering vessel information from multiple projected retinal layers can substantially increase vessel visibility, in this work, we propose a deep-learning-based approach to segment vessels involving the simultaneous use of three OCT en-face images as input. METHODS: A human expert vessel tracing combining information from OCT en-face images of the retinal

Effect of phenytoin on retinal ganglion cells in acute isolated optic neuritis.

OBJECTIVE: Phenytoin has been shown to reduce the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) loss in optic neuritis (ON). We evaluated the effects of phenytoin on retinal ganglion layers and visual outcomes of newly diagnosed acute ON. METHODS: A randomized, placebo-controlled trial was conducted in a tertiary referral eye hospital and patients with the first episode of typical demyelinating ON, without any history of multiple sclerosis were randomly assigned to phenytoin or placebo. The thickness of ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) measured by optical coherence tomography (OC

Evidence of retinal anterograde neurodegeneration in the very early stages of multiple sclerosis: a longitudinal OCT study.

BACKGROUND: Neurodegenerative processes are present since the early stages of multiple sclerosis (MS), constituting the primary substrate of disability. As part of the CNS, retinal damage could be considered a reliable prognostic biomarker of neurodegeneration in MS. OBJECTIVES: To characterize longitudinal changes in the retinal layers' thickness and to investigate correlations between retinal atrophy and other prognostic biomarkers, i.e., cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) β-amyloid1-42 (Aβ) levels. METHODS: Forty-two eyes without a history of optic neuritis of 23 MS patients were recruited. All pa

Extraction of Retinal Layers Through Convolution Neural Network (CNN) in an OCT Image for Glaucoma Diagnosis.

Glaucoma is a progressive and deteriorating optic neuropathy that leads to visual field defects. The damage occurs as glaucoma is irreversible, so early and timely diagnosis is of significant importance. The proposed system employs the convolution neural network (CNN) for automatic segmentation of the retinal layers. The inner limiting membrane (ILM) and retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE) are used to calculate cup-to-disc ratio (CDR) for glaucoma diagnosis. The proposed system uses structure tensors to extract candidate layer pixels, and a patch across each candidate layer pixel is extracted,

Dense laser at the papillomacular bundle does not cause loss of visual function.

INTRODUCTION: Juxtapapillary laser (JPL) photocoagulation in the region of the papillomacular bundle, temporal to the optic nerve, has become routine care in disorders such as optic disc pit maculopathy. Despite evidence demonstrating safe and effective use of this approach, there is still a lack of consensus in the literature, due to the perceived risk of loss of visual function. Instances of such misplaced caution could result in inadequate treatment protocols. METHODS: An observational series of five cases of optic disc pit maculopathy, treated with dense temporal juxtapapillary endolaser,
