Contribution of laparoscopy in the abdominal tuberculosis diagnosis: retrospective study of about 11 cases.

OBJECTIVE: Abdominal tuberculosis is one of the most frequent extra-pulmonary localizations. Its diagnosis is difficult and may lead to a delayed prescription of specific treatment. This study is aimed at stressing the role of laparoscopy associated with a biopsy in the diagnostic confirmation of abdominal tuberculosis particularly in doubtful cases. METHODS: The diagnostic features of 11 cases hospitalized for abdominal tuberculosis in the Paediatric Surgery Department of Fattouma Bourguiba Hospital in Monastir for a 6-year period (2001-2006), were evaluated retrospectively. The diagnosis of

Heterogeneity of OAS family expression in tuberculosis and the impact of different sample selection: a comprehensive analysis.

The 2'-5' oligoadenylate synthetase (OAS)family, comprising OAS1, OAS2, OAS3, and OASL, has been shown to participate in the host immune response against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). However, their expression profiles in tuberculosis (TB) remain inconsistent. In two TB-related datasets, the OAS family exhibits contrasting expression trends. To further investigate, we examined the expression of the OAS family in whole blood, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), and pleural fluid mononuclear cells (PFMC) as study samples, focusing on pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and tuberculous pleuri

An unusual case of tuberculous optic neuropathy associated with choroiditis.

Tuberculous optic neuropathy that includes papillitis, neuroretinitis, and optic nerve tubercle is a rare presentation of ocular tuberculosis. Though contagious spread from choroid following the hematogenous dissemination of the bacilli has been implicated in the optic nerve involvement, unlike neuroretinitis, optic nerve and choroidal involvement are usually considered as two separate clinical entities. We report a case of optic nerve involvement in a 33-year-old male who had concurrent choroidal involvement at present and also in the past. A strong history of contact with patients of pulmona

Diagnostic value of SAT-TB in stool and urine samples for intestinal and urinary tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND: The simultaneous amplification/testing for tuberculosis (SAT-TB) targets specific 16s rRNA for detecting Mycobacterium tuberculosis in real-time. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate SAT-TB's performance in detecting intestinal and urinary TB using stool and urine samples. METHODS: Stool (94) and urine samples (69) (From 2021 to 2022), were collected from pulmonary combined with suspected intestinal or urinary tuberculosis. Simultaneous detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis was performed using the SAT-TB method, Xpert MTB/RIF assay, and MGIT960 culture. RESULTS: For stool samples, the sensi

Sorafenib-induced tuberculosis reactivation.

BACKGROUND: Sorafenib is a multikinase inhibitor with an established role in treating renal cell carcinoma and hepatocellular carcinoma. In vivo studies have demonstrated sorafenib's inhibitory effects on various immune cells and cytokines which are essential to the maintenance of latency of granulomas in patients with latent tuberculosis infection. CASE REPORT: A 74-year-old male with clear cell renal cell carcinoma with pulmonary metastases was treated with sorafenib to good effect. However, he developed productive cough, sweats and weight loss. A computed tomography scan of the thorax demo

Male genital tuberculosis.

A 51-year-old man presented with painless left testicular swelling for 1 month, with fevers, chills, night sweats, weight loss, and increased difficulty voiding over 6 months. He underwent radical orchiectomy; surgical pathology revealed granulomas containing acid-fast bacilli in the testis and epididymis. Male genital tuberculosis was diagnosed using nucleic acid amplification on urine and confirmed by positive urine and sputum cultures for Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Genital disease is an unusual extrapulmonary manifestation of tuberculosis, often seen in middle-aged men with renal or pulmon

[A case of tuberculous uveitis complicated by myelodysplastic syndrome].

BACKGROUND: Recently, the incidence of tuberculosis in compromised hosts has increased. CASE: A 52-year-old man suffering from myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) had pulmonary tuberculosis. On June 22, 1996, we found a disc-sized choroidal lesion with milky appearance on the paramacular in his right eye. After 1 month, a similar choroidal lesion was found near the disc in the same eye. In spite of chemotherapy for MDS and antituberculosis medications, those choroidal lesions gradually enlarged. In November, satellite lesions were found around them. Some retinal exudates and hemorrhage were also d

Urinary tuberculosis: a review of 44 cases treated since 1963.

We are reporting on a decade of experinece with cases of renal tuberculosis treated at a large tuberculosis hospital. Most patients were men less than 50 years old. The most frequent symptoms were dysuria, back or flank pain, nocturia and hematuria. Physical examinations were generally normal and hypertension was not seen. Most patients had acid urinary pH, pyuria and/or hematuria. Excretory urograms were abnormal in 86 per cent of the cases, the most common finding being preserved function but calicectasis or abscess. Most patients had abnormal chest x-rays and nearly half of them had coexist

STUDIES OF LUNG VOLUME : III. TUBERCULOUS WOMEN.

The total capacity, middle capacity, and residual air have been determined in twenty adult women suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis. The chest volumes have been determined in each case and the normal lung volumes calculated by means of the ratios worked out in Paper I and applied to thirty-one men in Paper II. The excursions of the diaphragm have been determined by fluoroscopy in all cases. Of eight patients with incipient tuberculosis, five had lung capacities like those of men in the same group; i.e., about normal total capacity, slightly increased residual air, and consequently somewhat

Metagenomic fingerprints in bronchoalveolar lavage differentiate pulmonary diseases.

Recent advances in unbiased metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) enable simultaneous examination of microbial and host genetic material. We developed a multimodal machine learning-based diagnostic approach to differentiate lung cancer and pulmonary infections by analyzing 402 bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) mNGS datasets, including lung cancer (n = 123), bacterial infections (n = 114), fungal infections (n = 79), and pulmonary tuberculosis (n = 86). The training cohort revealed differences in microbial profiles, bacteriophage abundance, host gene and transposable element expressio

Mycobacterial infections in the era of modern biologic agents.

Patients with rheumatologic disease are at increased risk for mycobacterial infections because of both immunocompromising therapy and preexisting lung damage from the disease itself. Tuberculosis is uncommon in the United States; however, it is relatively more prevalent in immigrants, minorities, elderly, persons with acquired immune deficiency syndrome and among healthcare workers. In the United States, the nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are now more prevalent than tuberculosis. Although initially noted in men with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, recent observations indicate increas
