Objective/Background: Sleep can have an important influence on memory. However, it is unclear whether there is any relation between sleep quality and the specificity with which autobiographical memories are retrieved, a key factor associated with vulnerability for, and the presence of, depression and other psychiatric diagnoses. The present study provides the first investigation of the association between sleep quality and autobiographical memory specificity. Participants and Method: Fifty-four unselected community participants completed the Autobiographical Memory Test (AMT) to assess memory

Disruption of circadian clocks is strongly associated with mood disorders. Chronotherapies targeting circadian rhythms have been shown to be very effective treatments of mood disorders, but still are not widely used in clinical practice. The mechanisms by which circadian disruption leads to mood disorders are poorly characterized and, therefore, may not convince clinicians to apply chronotherapies. Hence, in this review, we describe specific potential mechanisms, in order to make this connection more credible to clinicians. We believe that four major features of disrupted clocks may contribute

BACKGROUND: In clinical practice, several strategies and pharmacological options are available to treat neuropsychiatric symptoms of Huntington disease (HD). However, there is currently insufficient data for evidence-based guidelines on the management of these common symptoms.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to develop expert-based recommendations regarding the management of agitation, anxiety, apathy, psychosis, and sleep disorders.
METHODS: Guideline development was based on a modified Institute of Medicine guideline process that accounted for a lack of evidence base. An international committee of 11

There are currently 3 FDA approved treatments for alcohol use disorder (AUD) in the USA, opioid receptor antagonists such as naltrexone, disulfiram and acamprosate. To date, these have been largely inadequate at preventing relapse at a population level and this may be because they only target certain aspects of AUD. Recently, suvorexant, a dual orexin receptor antagonist, has been FDA approved for the treatment of insomnia. Importantly, sleep disruptions occur during both acute and prolonged alcohol exposure and sleep deprivation is a potent factor promoting relapse to alcohol use. In this min

INTRODUCTION: Recently, a small but growing literature has depicted the beneficial effects of nocturnal hemodialysis (NHD) over conventional hemodialysis (CHD) in the fields of sleep disorders such as sleep apnea. The impact of various dialysis models on sleep disorders, however, has not been determined. The objective of our meta-analysis is to examine the potential effects of NHD, compared with CHD, on sleep disorders in HD patients.
METHODS: Several electronic databases including PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, ClinicalTrials.gov and CNKI were searched, using

Objective: Children with ADHD display higher rates of sleep problems, and both sleep disorders and ADHD have been shown to affect functioning in childhood. The current study examines the frequency and relationship between sleep problems and ADHD, and their impact on quality of life (QoL) and functional impairment. Method: Parents of 192 children with ADHD (M = 10.23 years) completed measures regarding their child's ADHD symptoms (Swanson, Nolan and Pelham [SNAP]), sleep disorders (Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire [PSQ]), QoL (Child Health Illness Profile [CHIP-PE]), and functioning (Weiss Functio

The narrative review is used as a methodological tool for the presentation of this article. A search was made in the PubMed, Elsevier, Ebsco, and Medline databases using temporal limits (publications from 2005 to 2016), in the Spanish, English, and Portuguese language, and by the type of persons analysed in the study (adolescents), along with the keywords in English: Adolescent/teen, tiredness, fatigue, sleepiness, drowsiness. A total of 33 articles of relevance were obtained for the diagnostic and therapeutic approach of the tired adolescent in Primary Care. It was found that the main cause o

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this investigation is to determine the differences in quality of life (QOL) and clinical phenotype between patients with treatment resistant (TRD) and non-treatment resistant depression (NTRD).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The severity, QOL, and cognitive function of 107 TRD and 173 NTRD patients were evaluated and calculated by the Hamilton Depression Scale-17 (HAMD-17), the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), and the P300 component of event-related potentials (ERP), respectively.
RESULTS: The scores of HAMD-17 showed no significant statistical differences between T

Sleep disturbances are associated with various metabolic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. We had previously established a mouse model of a psychophysiological stress-induced chronic sleep disorder (CSD) characterized by disrupted circadian rhythms of wheel-running activity, core body temperature, and sleep-wake cycles. To evaluate the underlying mechanisms of metabolic disorders induced by CSD, we created mice with CSD for six weeks and fed them with a high-fat diet. Glucose intolerance with hyperglycemia resulted, although plasma insulin levels and body weight increases were identi

Forty years ago, C.D. Marsden proposed that blepharospasm should be considered a form of adult-onset focal dystonia. In the present paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of the findings regarding blepharospasm reported in the past 40 years. Although prolonged spasms of the orbicularis oculi muscles remain the clinical hallmark of blepharospasm, patients with blepharospasm may be characterized by various types of involuntary activation of periocular muscles. In addition to motor features, blepharospasm patients may also have nonmotor manifestations, including psychiatric, mild cognitive, a

There are many reasons to take into consideration the sleep disorders in the elderly. The sleep quality degrades with age and is strongly affected by medical conditions, intrinsic sleep disorders, or by a combination of these factors. Other age-related conditions such as severe dementia, dependence or living in institution worsen sleep disturbances in older people. When living alone elderly people, being cognitively impaired and medically disabled, may not be able to complain about sleep problems. Sleep disorders are thus underdiagnosed, unmarked, and insufficiently investigated in the elderly

The development of antiretroviral therapy (ART) has dramatically increased the lifespan of HIV patients but treatment is complicated by numerous adverse effects and toxicities. ART complications include neuropsychiatric, metabolic, gastrointestinal, cardiac, and numerous other toxicities, and clinicians often have to choose one toxicity over another to offer the best medication regimen for a patient. Some antiviral drugs cause significant neuropsychiatric complications, including depression, cognitive impairment, and sleep disturbance. Even in careful studies, it may be difficult to determine

Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is common in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), but it is also common in the general population. When sleepiness remains after continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment of OSA, comorbid conditions or permanent brain injury before CPAP therapy may be the cause of the residual sleepiness. There is currently no broad approach to treating residual EDS in patients with OSA. Individual assessment must be made of comorbid conditions and medications, and of lifestyle factors that may be contributing to the sleepiness. Modafinil and armodafinil are the only pha

Patients with fibromyalgia experience chronic widespread pain, with associated symptoms of fatigue, sleep disturbance and memory problems. There are many therapies which may be helpful in managing the symptoms of fibromyalgia; however, these often require a process of trial and error to establish optimum management using a combination of pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches. Nurses can support patients with fibromyalgia using a biopsychosocial approach to symptom management. Understanding the nature of fibromyalgia and management options will enable nurses to deliver holistic pat

Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland during the night in response to light/dark information received by the retina and its integration by the suprachiasmatic nucleus. When administered to selected populations of adults, in particular those displaying delayed sleep phase disorder, melatonin may advance the time of sleep onset. It is, however, being increasingly prescribed for children with sleep disorders despite the fact that (i) it is not registered for use in children anywhere in the world; (ii) it has not undergone the formal safety testing expected for a new drug, especially
