PURPOSE: Elevated levels of absenteeism have been reported for students receiving special education services, especially students with learning disabilities (LDs) and emotional disturbances (EDs). In contrast, little is known about absenteeism rates associated with students with communication disorders (CDs).
METHOD: Archival records of student attendance for the 1997-2001 academic years from a mid-sized urban school district in the Intermountain West were used to examine absenteeism rates in students receiving services for CDs, LDs, and EDs. Two cohort samples were generated (K-4th grade and

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) are a public health threat, and have been found in humans, animals and the environment. Carbapenems are not authorized for use in EU or UK companion animals, and the prevalence of carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacilli (CRGNB) in this population is unknown.
METHODS: We investigated CRGNB isolated from animal specimens received by one diagnostic laboratory from 34 UK veterinary practices (September 2015-December 2016). Any Gram-negative isolates from clinical specimens showing reduced susceptibility to fluoroquinolones

This study was carried out to determine the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes and mobile genetic elements of 4 fecal blaCMY-2-producing Escherichia coli isolated from Holstein dairy calves on the same farm using whole-genome sequencing. Genomic analysis revealed that 3 of the 4 isolates shared similar genetic features, including sequence type (ST), serotype, plasmid characteristics, insertion ST, and virulence genes. In addition to genes encoding for complex multidrug resistance efflux systems, all 4 isolates were carriers of genes conferring resistance to β-lactams (blaCMY-2, blaTEM-1B), t

OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to characterize the putative MBL of the environmental strain Zhongshania aliphaticivorans isolated from a marine environment.
METHODS: The putative MBL was identified in silico using the NCBI database. The β-lactamase gene was cloned into different Escherichia coli backgrounds. Kinetic parameters were determined using the purified enzyme.
RESULTS: The enzyme named ZHO-1 shared 51% amino acid identity with the acquired class B carbapenemases IMP-1, KHM-1 and DIM-1. Expression of the blaZHO-1 gene in a susceptible E. coli resulted in a carbapenemase phenotype. Kinetic p

Antimicrobial resistance has become a serious public health threat throughout the world, and therapeutic options for several infectious diseases are currently limited by the presence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria. This study was designed to examine the drug resistance patterns, the prevalence of the β-lactamases, and class 1 integrons in MDR Escherichia coli isolates from chicken meat in Korea. Among 200 chicken meat samples, 101 isolates were observed to be positive for E. coli, of which 57 were identified as MDR E. coli. Among 57 MDR E. coli isolates, the prevalence of bla gene, blaC

We performed a single-month snapshot study of the population diversity of multidrug resistant (MDR) Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates producing carbapenemases and/or extended-spectrum β-lactamases from four major hospitals in Brazil. Isolates produced diverse ESBL (CTX-M-2, -8, -15, SHV-2), KPC-2 or both (CTX-M-2 and KPC-2), linked to specific genetic backgrounds and plasmids from a few families (IncR, IncFIIk, IncL/M) that were shared among clonal lineages within and between hospitals. A high clonal diversity was identified, among isolates from the same ST (ST11, ST15, ST101 or ST340). Diverse c

We investigated the antimicrobial susceptibility, the genotypic distributions of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) and AmpC genes, and the molecular epidemiology of AmpC-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae (AmpC-KP) isolates causing bacteremia. Among 260 K. pneumoniae clinical isolates included in this study, plasmid-mediated AmpC β-lactamases were found in 20.7% (54/260), which included DHA-1 (96.3%, 52/54), CMY-2 (3.7%, 2/54), and CMY-10 (1.9%, 1/54). One isolate also produced DHA-1 along with CMY-2. Of the 54 AmpC-KP isolates, 31 isolates (57.4%) showed ESBL positivity. Of these 31 isolates

From April to May 2014, a total of seven cases of meropenem (MEPM)-resistant Escherichia coli were isolated from the sputum specimens in 7 different patients in a community hospital. The MICs of MEPM for isolates were 8 to 32 μg/mL, whereas the MICs of imipenem (IPM) were 0.5 μg/mL or 1 μg/mL. All of the isolates possessed the metallo β-lactamase (MBL) IMP-6 gene, and were CTX-M-2 type extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producers. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) patterns for the isolates were identical. At the time of specimen collection, one patient had been hospitalized for a long

Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a Gram-negative bacterium, is a member of the ESKAPE pathogens and one of the leading causes of healthcare-associated infections worldwide. Aminoglycosides (AGs) are recognized for their efficacy against P. aeruginosa. The most common resistance mechanism against AGs is the acquisition of AG-modifying enzymes (AMEs) by the bacteria, including AG N-acetyltransferases (AACs), AG O-phosphotransferases (APHs), and AG O-nucleotidyltransferases (ANTs). In this study, we obtained 122 multidrug-resistant P. aeruginosa clinical isolates and evaluated the antibacterial effects of

We developed and evaluated multiplexed molecular beacon probes in a real-time PCR assay to identify prominent extended-spectrum-β-lactamase, plasmid-mediated AmpC β-lactamase (pAmpC) and carbapenemase genes directly from perianal swab specimens within 6 h. We evaluated this assay on 158 perianal swabs collected from hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients and found that this assay was highly sensitive and specific for detection of CTX-M-, pAmpC-, and KPC-producing Enterobacteriaceae compared to culture on chromogenic agar.

Rooted in the mechanism of action of antibiotics and subject to bacterial evolution, antibiotic resistance is difficult and perhaps impossible to overcome. Nevertheless, strategies can be used to minimize the emergence and impact of resistance. Antibiotic adjuvants offer one such approach. These are compounds that have little or no antibiotic activity themselves but act to block resistance or otherwise enhance antibiotic action. Antibiotic adjuvants are therefore delivered in combination with antibiotics and can be divided into two groups: Class I agents that act on the pathogen, and Class II
