BACKGROUND: As an important salt-alkali-tolerant crop, quinoa can respond to salt stress through various pathways. However, the response mechanisms of the rhizosphere microenvironment to salt stress require further exploration. This study aimed to investigate the effects of salt stress on the metabolic profile of quinoa rhizosphere soil and to explore its salt tolerance mechanisms at the metabolic level.
RESULTS: Using Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole-Orbitrap mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap-MS)based untargeted metabolomics, combined with multivariate s

Rapid industrialization and urbanization have intensified cadmium (Cd) contamination in terrestrial ecosystems. The development of sustainable and low-impact remediation approaches are therefore essential. Phytoremediation using plant species displaying high Cd tolerance offers a promising solution for Cd-extraction from contaminated soils. Current study investigated the effects of plant growth regulators (PGRs; gibberellic acid and indole-3-acetic acid) and macronutrient fertilization on growth performance, biochemical traits and Cd phytoextraction efficiency of Ricinus communis (R. communis)

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can enhance drought tolerance of host plants; however, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. Here, PtPIP1;2, a plasma membrane intrinsic protein gene strongly induced by AMF (Funneliformis mosseae (T.H. Nicolson & Gerd.) C. Walker & A. Schüßler) colonization under drought stress, was identified. Subcellular localization confirmed that PtPIP1;2 targets the plasma membrane. To investigate its function, PtPIP1;2-overexpressing (OE) hairy root lines were generated in trifoliate orange (Poncirus trifoliata L. Raf.). Under drought stress, OE plants ex

Quadrisphaera is a rare genus of the phylum Actinomycetota which is rarely studied for functional characteristics of its phenotype and genome. The endophytic actinobacterium, strain KR29T, was isolated from the surface-sterilized Jasmine rice leaf (Oryza sativa KDML 105). This strain was an aerobic actinobacterium that formed cocci cells with tetrad arrangements. The type strains that shared the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with strain KR29T were Quadrisphaera oryzae TBRC 8486T (99.6%), Quadrisphaera setariae NBRC 113770T (99.4%), and Quadrisphaera granulorum JCM 16010T (99.0%). Acetamiprid (ACE), a widely used neonicotinoid insecticide, poses persistent ecological risks to coastal ecosystems. However, its multi-media transformation pathways and the underlying biological drivers in coastal wetlands remain poorly understood. Here, using high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) based non-target screening integrated with Partial Least Squares Path Modeling (PLS-PM), we systematically investigated the ACE migration, biotransformation, and removal mechanisms in a mesocosm wetland system planted with three salt-tolerant hydrophytes: Phragmites australis (PA), Iris pseudacor

Rehydrated fermented corn (RFC) is widely used in dairy production in Brazil; however, its fermentation often leads to excessive gas production and nutrient loss. This study investigated the effects of varying soybean meal replacement ratios (100:0 to 0:100), while maintaining a constant DM content, and fermentation durations (7 to 60 d) on nutrient preservation and GHG emissions in RFC. In addition, 16S rRNA sequencing was used to analyze changes in the microbial community composition and functional potential. The experiment was a 5 × 4 factorial design, completely randomized, with factor A a

The management of cholesterol by using Atorvastatin calcium (ATV) and Ezetimibe (EZE) is often restricted by the fact that they belong to BCS Class II drugs, thus, low aqueous solubility and low systemic bioavailability. The research has created a new pH-responsive hydrogel involving a natural polycationic polysaccharide, chitosan, to increase residence time in the sites of absorption and offer controlled, concurrent delivery of both drugs. The hydrogels were synthesized through a free-radical polymerization process, which entailed dissolving chitosan in aqueous acetic acid, initiation by ammo

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory condition of the intestine, for which no cure currently exists. The gut microbiota play a critical role in ameliorating IBD, and Eubacterium limosum has emerged as a potential probiotic with anti-inflammatory properties. However, the specific anti-inflammatory effects of E. limosum and the underlying mechanisms remain largely unexplored.
METHODS: The E. limosum strain El1405 was utilized to evaluate its effects on dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced murine colitis. The structural changes in intestinal microbiota were as

The progression of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is shaped by a multifaceted interplay among genetic, behavioral, and environmental factors, alongside gut dysbiosis. Cinnamon, being abundant in polyphenols and flavonoids, shows significant antioxidant effects. Studies have substantiated that cinnamon contributes to the management of glucose and lipid metabolism. However, the anti-diabetic efficacy of cinnamon is not completely understood. The objective of this research was to clarify the anti-diabetic mechanism associated with cinnamon extract through a combination of chemical profiling, net

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are ubiquitous. Young children are commonly exposed to these chemicals via ingestion of settled dust. Several PFAS have been associated with cancers in adults, yet little is known about the risk in children. We investigated whether PFAS concentrations in residential dust were associated with childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Vacuum bags were collected in homes of 178 children diagnosed with ALL and 204 healthy controls (age 0-7 years) residing in California (2001-2007). Dust samples were sieved and analyzed for 19 PFAS using targeted liqui

Integrating immunomodulatory and antibacterial functions into bone scaffolds is crucial for effective bone regeneration, especially in infection-prone clinical settings. This strategy enhances healing, reduces postoperative infection risk, and improves implant osseointegration. Here, we developed a 3D-printed scaffold with shape-memory, immunomodulatory, and antibacterial capabilities. The scaffold was fabricated by dissolving poly(caprolactone-co-lactic acid) in dioxane and incorporating biphasic calcium phosphate, followed by low-temperature 3D printing, freeze-drying, and surface etching wi

Controllable methane oxidation directly into higher-value-added products under mild conditions remains a challenge due to the stability of the C-H bond. To promote methane oxidation using metal-organic frameworks, it is still necessary to explore ways of stabilizing metal active sites on MOFs due to the leaching and near-complete degradation of the catalyst after exposure to highly oxidative environments. Herein, we report a structural engineering approach based on Ga3+-Fe3+ complexes in biological systems to tailor the redox-cycle activity. It was imitated by tailoring Ga3+ doping into Fe-MIL

We present a DFT-PCM NMR study of 3-indoleacetic acid (3-IAA), used as a working example, including explicit solvent molecules, named PCM-nCHCl3, PCM-nDMSO (n = 0, 2, 4, 8, 14, 20, and 25), to investigate the dimer formation in solution. Apart from well-known cyclic (I) and open (II) acetic acid (AA) dimers, two new structures were located on DFT-PCM potential energy surface (PES) for 3-IAA named quasicyclic A (III) and quasicyclic B (IV), the last one having N-H…O hydrogen bond (instead of O-H…O). In addition, four other structures having π-π type interactions named V, VI, VII, and VIII were

Background/Objectives: Gut-derived tryptophan (Trp) metabolites play important roles in metabolic and cardiovascular regulation. Although animal studies suggest their protective effects against metabolic dysfunction, data in adolescents, particularly those with obesity, remain limited. The objective of this study was to evaluate associations between circulating gut-derived Trp metabolites and markers of cardiometabolic, vascular, and platelet health in adolescents with obesity. Methods: Data were analyzed from 28 adolescents (ages 13-18; mean BMI = 36 ± 6.4 kg/m2). Fasting blood was collected

OBJECTIVE: Cervical cancer screen-and-treat programs, which combine human papillomavirus (HPV)-based screening with immediate ablation of lesions, are a key strategy for reducing cervical cancer burden in low-resource settings. Although ablation is known to impair squamocolumnar junction (SCJ) visibility in the short-term, its long-term effects remain unclear, with potential implications for subsequent screening and follow-up. This study evaluated whether prior ablation is associated with incomplete SCJ visualization approximately 5 years post-treatment.
METHODS: We analyzed data from the Cer

Galanthamine is an immensely valuable alkaloid exhibiting anti-cancer and antiviral activity. The cultivation of plant tissues in in vitro conditions is a good source for the synthesis and enrichment of secondary metabolites of commercial interest. In this study, the Amaryllidaceae alkaloid galanthamine was quantified in three Zephyranthes species, such as Zephyranthes candida, Zephyranthes grandiflora, and Zephyranthes citrina, and the impact of the methyl jasmonate (MJ) signaling molecule on galanthamine accumulation was monitored in in vitro-derived plant tissues. This is the first ever stu

PER: and polyfluoroalkyl substances have gained increased attention due to their persistence, ubiquitous presence in the environment, and toxicity. We hypothesised that the formation of non-extractable residues [NER] occurs in soils and contributes to the overall persistence of these priority pollutants, and that NER formation is controlled by temperature. To test these hypotheses, we used 14C-labelled perfluorooctanoic acid [PFOA] as target compound, added it to two arable soils (Cambisol, Luvisol), and incubated them at 10 °C and 20 °C in the dark. To support potential co-metabolic decomposi
