Maternal Heat Shock Protein as a Potential Biomarker of Adaptation to Heat Stress during Pregnancy and Its Relation to Preterm Birth.

We evaluated whether maternal HSP27 and HSP70 responded to heat stress during pregnancy and whether HSPs were associated with preterm birth in a secondary analysis of a prospective cohort with repeated biomarkers (N = 227 from MADRES). Serum HSPs were measured during early and late pregnancy using ELISA. Daily heat stress in the 30 days before HSP measurement was computed as Daily Maximum Heat Index (DMHI) and Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT). Distributed lag models identified sensitive windows of heat adaptation; logistic regression models assessed HSPs' effects on preterm birth (<37 gestati

A race against time: timing constraints of cardiac filling and athletic performance.

Cardiac filling is constrained by a reduced ejection time and diastolic period as heart rate increases during exercise. We compared cardiac filling dynamics in endurance athletes and controls during exercise to determine how athletic status influences hemodynamic constraints during exercise. Thirty-two participants (21 endurance athletes and 11 controls) underwent exercise echocardiography at 20, 40, and 60% of peak power output. We measured cardiac timing, stroke volume (SV), and flow rates (SV indexed to body surface area and phase duration). Data were analyzed using linear mixed models. Ath

Stomatal Morphology, Leaf Nutrients and Molecular Adaptations Are Associated With Scald Resistance in Barley.

Scald, caused by Rhynchosporium secalis, can reduce grain yield by up to 40% in susceptible cultivars. To investigate physiological and molecular responses associated with scald resistance in barley, we compared a susceptible cultivar, Atlantis, with a resistant cultivar, Yangsimai 3, under uninoculated control and R. secalis-inoculated conditions. Relative to the uninoculated control, Atlantis showed significant reductions in shoot and root length (20.6% and 22.9%), shoot and root dry weight (27.7% and 28.3%), SPAD value (30.9%) and chlorophyll fluorescence (10.8%), whereas Yangsimai 3 showed

Morphological and mechanical properties of the knee extensors between strength training and cross-training practitioners: A cross-sectional study.

It remains unclear whether different training modalities, such as strength training (ST) and cross-training (CT), induce distinct musculoskeletal adaptations. In this cross-sectional study, thirty-seven males with at least 2 years of experience in the respective modality participated (ST = 20; CT = 17). After anthropometric assessment, vastus lateralis (VL) muscle architecture and stiffness were evaluated, determining fascicle length (FL), muscle thickness (MT), pennation angle (PA), and shear-wave velocity. Knee extensor peak torque was measured in an isokinetic dynamometer at 60°/s, 180°/s,

Understanding Motor Adaptation in the Transition to Sustained Pain: Protocol for a Longitudinal Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain affects over 30% of the global population and remains a major public health issue due to limited treatment efficacy and the need for mechanism-based, personalized approaches. Motor behavior is theorized to play a role in pain persistence through altered movement patterns, muscle recruitment, and proprioception. While motor behavior is linked to chronic pain, empirical evidence on underlying mechanisms, particularly cortical dynamics, remains scarce. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate longitudinal changes in cortical sensorimotor excitability and their relation

Microbial community dynamics and protein-level adaptation to petrochemical pollution in river systems on the northern margin of the Yellow River Delta, Shandong, China.

Petrochemical contamination poses significant ecological risks to aquatic ecosystems, and the molecular mechanisms contributing to microbial resilience are not yet fully characterised. In this study, high-throughput 16S rRNA sequencing was combined with protein molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations to investigate microbial community dynamics and protein-level responses along a contamination gradient in Shandong, China. Contaminated sites displayed higher microbial diversity and evenness, suggesting adaptive plasticity. Genera such as hgcI clade, CL500-29 marine group, Mycobacter

Similar effects between animal-based and plant-based protein blend as complementary dietary protein on muscle adaptations to resistance training: findings from a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests that both animal and plant proteins support strength and hypertrophy gains when paired with resistance training and adequate protein intake. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of supplementary protein source (blend of plant-based [PLNT] vs. animal based [ANML]) to habitual diet on changes in muscle mass and strength in healthy young men undertaking resistance training. METHODS: Forty-four young untrained males were recruited for this study. Subjects were randomly allocated into two groups, and consumed three 15-g daily doses (45 g. d-

A small regulatory RNA controls antibiotic adaptation in Staphylococcus aureus by modulating efflux pump expression.

Staphylococcus aureus is an opportunistic pathogen that poses a considerable burden to healthcare settings worldwide, aided by its ability to thrive in different environmental growth conditions and survive exposure to antibiotics. Small regulatory RNAs (sRNAs) are decisive in enhancing bacterial fitness by modulating gene expression in response to changing environmental conditions. We investigated the role of sRNAs in the adaptation of S. aureus to antibiotics. By assessing the fitness of a library of sRNA mutants, we identified that RsaA sRNA is required for optimal bacterial growth when expo

AMPK is necessary for Treg functional adaptation to microenvironmental stress during malignancy and viral pneumonia.

CD4+FOXP3+ Treg cells maintain self tolerance, suppress the immune response to cancer, and protect against tissue injury during acute inflammation. Treg cells require mitochondrial metabolism to function, but how Treg cells adapt their metabolic programs to optimize their function during an immune response occurring in a metabolically stressed microenvironment remains unclear. Here, we tested whether Treg cells require the energy homeostasis-maintaining enzyme AMPK to adapt to metabolically aberrant microenvironments caused by malignancy or lung injury, finding that AMPK is dispensable for Tre

Effects of blood flow restriction on internal and external training load metrics during acute and chronic short-term repeated-sprint training in team-sport athletes.

This study examined internal, external training loads, internal:external ratios, and aerobic adaptations for acute and short-term chronic repeated-sprint training (RST) with blood flow restriction (BFR). Using randomised crossover (Experiment A) and between-subject (Experiment B) designs, 15 and 24 semi-professional Australian footballers completed two and nine RST sessions, respectively. Sessions comprised three sets of 5-7 × 5-second sprints and 25 seconds recovery, with continuous BFR (45% arterial occlusion pressure) or without (Non-BFR). NRF2 deficiency leads to inadequate beta cell adaptation during pregnancy and gestational diabetes.

The late stages of mammalian pregnancy are accompanied by a mild increase in insulin resistance likely due to enhanced glucose demand of the growing fetus. Therefore, as an adaptive process to maintain euglycemia during pregnancy, maternal β-cell mass expands leading to increased insulin release. Defects in functional β-cell adaptive expansion during pregnancy can lead to gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). While the exact mechanisms that promote GDM are poorly understood, GDM is associated with inadequate functional β-cell mass expansion and with a systematic increase of oxidative stress. He

Neonatal Urine Metabolic Signature Reflects Multisystemic Adaptations Linked to Preterm Birth.

Prematurity is associated with a higher risk of developing short- and long-term metabolic complications. However, the concrete mechanisms are not yet fully understood. The purpose of this study was to characterize early urinary metabolic adaptations linked to preterm birth. Urine samples collected at one month of age were compared between extremely and very preterm neonates (<32 weeks gestation) (n = 45) and term newborns (n = 96). Liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques were both applied and analyzed independently. Univariate

Effects of Lower Extremity Alignment During Barbell Squat Training on Muscle Volumes.

Chiu, LZF, and Fry, AC. Effects of lower extremity alignment during barbell squat training on muscle volumes. J Strength Cond Res 39(10): 1053-1061, 2025-Squat training increases monoarticular hip and knee extensor muscle size. Biomechanical studies demonstrate that hip muscle demands are different for squats performed with "knees in" vs. "knees out" tibiofemoral alignment. To: (a) determine whether these differences in hip muscle demands influence hip extensor muscle size adaptations and (b) examine the safety of these squat variations, training with "knees in" vs. "knees out" squats was comp

Age-Related changes in joint power during gait: Adaptations in middle-aged adults to maintain walking speed.

Across the adult lifespan, gait speed is thought to be maintained through midlife and starts to decrease after age 60. Reducing the piston-like drive of the gastrocnemius during push-off (ankle joint power burst A2) is a change that decreases gait speed and increases stability in older adults. As physiological systems begin to decline during midlife, middle-aged adults may adjust their joint powers to minimize destabilization while maintaining a gait speed comparable to that of younger adults. The purpose is to quantify changes in joint powers during gait as a function of advancing age; younge

Articulated ankle-foot-orthosis improves inter-limb propulsion symmetry during walking adaptability task post-stroke.

BACKGROUND: Community ambulation involves complex walking adaptability tasks such as stepping over obstacles or taking long steps, which require adequate propulsion generation by the trailing leg. Individuals post-stroke often have an increased reliance on their trailing nonparetic leg and favor leading with their paretic leg, which can limit mobility. Ankle-foot-orthoses are prescribed to address common deficits post-stroke such as foot drop and ankle instability. However, it is not clear if walking with an ankle-foot-orthosis improves inter-limb propulsion symmetry during adaptability tasks.

Secondary messenger signalling influences Pseudomonas aeruginosa adaptation to sinus and lung environments.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a cause of chronic respiratory tract infections in people with cystic fibrosis (CF), non-CF bronchiectasis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Prolonged infection allows the accumulation of mutations and horizontal gene transfer, increasing the likelihood of adaptive phenotypic traits. Adaptation is proposed to arise first in bacterial populations colonizing upper airway environments. Here, we model this process using an experimental evolution approach. Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1, which is not airway adapted, was serially passaged, separately, in media chemic

Plate tectonics, cold adaptation and long-distance range expansion to remote archipelagos and the high Andes as drivers of a circumantarctic freshwater arthropod radiation.

Disjunct distributions, characterised by spatially separated populations of related species, offer insights into historical biogeographic patterns and evolutionary processes. This study investigates the evolutionary history of the diving beetle subfamily Lancetinae through a phylogenomic approach incorporating ultraconserved elements (UCEs) and heritage genetic markers. Our findings support an early Miocene origin for Lancetinae, with subsequent diversification influenced by historical vicariance events and long-distance dispersal. The divergence from the closely related subfamily Coptotominae

Compound heterozygous RYR1-RM mouse model reveals disease pathomechanisms and muscle adaptations to promote postnatal survival.

Pathogenic variants in the type I ryanodine receptor (RYR1) result in a wide range of muscle disorders referred to as RYR1-related myopathies (RYR1-RM). We developed the first RYR1-RM mouse model resulting from co-inheritance of two different RYR1 missense alleles (Ryr1TM/SC-ΔL mice). Ryr1TM/SC-ΔL mice exhibit a severe, early onset myopathy characterized by decreased body/muscle mass, muscle weakness, hypotrophy, reduced RYR1 expression, and unexpectedly, incomplete postnatal lethality with a plateau survival of ~50% at 12 weeks of age. Ryr1TM/SC-ΔL mice display reduced respiratory function, l

The histone chaperone HIR maintains chromatin states to control nitrogen assimilation and fungal virulence.

Adaptation to changing environments and immune evasion is pivotal for fitness of pathogens. Yet, the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. Adaptation is governed by dynamic transcriptional re-programming, which is tightly connected to chromatin architecture. Here, we report a pivotal role for the HIR histone chaperone complex in modulating virulence of the human fungal pathogen Candida albicans. Genetic ablation of HIR function alters chromatin accessibility linked to aberrant transcriptional responses to protein as nitrogen source. This accelerates metabolic adaptation and increases t
