Elucidating the underlying mechanism of mechanical stress-induced impact on mRNA-LNP structure.

The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the suitability of mRNA-lipid nanoparticle (LNP) drug product as an appropriate vaccine for emergency response during a global health crisis. Understanding of mRNA-LNPs stability and mechanisms of degradation is important; however a deeper mechanistic understanding of the impact of liquid-air interfaces on mRNA-LNP is still absent. This study used a combination of nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) to elucidate the dynamics occurring during shaking induced stress

Biomass Growth and Fatty Acid Production by the Marine Thraustochytrium sp. RT2316-16 in Chemically Defined Media.

The biomass and lipid production responses of the psychrophilic marine thraustochytrid Thraustochytrium sp. RT2316-16 were assessed in chemically defined media comprising glucose, up to 17 amino acids and up to 9 B-vitamins and mineral salts. Compared to the control medium with all amino acids and B-vitamins (biomass concentration: 7.1 ± 0.1 g L-1; total lipid content: 30.4 ± 0.5% of the DW), the growth of RT2316-16 was reduced by more than 50% in the medium that lacked cyanocobalamin or pyridoxamine. The total lipid content of the biomass grown in the absence of vitamins was 63% lower than in

Understanding autism: Causes, diagnosis, and advancing therapies.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by difficulties in social communication, languages, and repetitive behaviors. Its rising prevalence has made it a critical global public health issue. ASD is believed to arise from a combination of genetic and environmental influences. While some gene mutations associated with ASD have been identified, most cases lack clear genetic explanations. Evidence increasingly points to early-life environmental factors as key contributors to ASD, including advanced parental age, maternal diabetes during pregnancy, infections, hormon

Macropore absorbent with bihydrophilic layers for the recovery of low-sulfur fuel oil.

Conventional absorbent pads are widely employed for oil spill cleanup; however, their microporous structures face challenges in absorbing low-sulfur fuel oil (LSFO), especially at lower temperatures when LSFO solidifies owing to its high-viscosity shear stress. In this study, we developed a macroporous absorbent with bihydrophilic layers (MABL), i.e., a central hydrophobic layer sandwiched between two hydrophilic layers, with improved LSFO absorption efficiency. Unlike conventional hydrophobic absorbents, which remain predominantly afloat on the water surface with minimal submersion, the MABL

Effects of Annealing Conditions on the Catalytic Performance of Anodized Tin Oxide for Electrochemical Carbon Dioxide Reduction.

The electrochemical reduction of CO2 (CO2RR) to value-added products has garnered significant interest as a sustainable solution to mitigate CO2 emissions and harness renewable energy sources. Among CO2RR products, formic acid/formate (HCOOH/HCOO-) is particularly attractive due to its industrial relevance, high energy density, and potential candidate as a liquid hydrogen carrier. This study investigates the influence of the initial oxidation state of tin on CO2RR performance using nanostructured SnOx catalysts. A simple, quick, scalable, and cost-effective synthesis strategy was employed to f

Engineering Rubisco condensation in chloroplasts to manipulate plant photosynthesis.

Although Rubisco is the most abundant enzyme globally, it is inefficient for carbon fixation because of its low turnover rate and limited ability to distinguish CO2 and O2, especially under high O2 conditions. To address these limitations, phytoplankton, including cyanobacteria and algae, have evolved CO2-concentrating mechanisms (CCM) that involve compartmentalizing Rubisco within specific structures, such as carboxysomes in cyanobacteria or pyrenoids in algae. Engineering plant chloroplasts to establish similar structures for compartmentalizing Rubisco has attracted increasing interest for i

Aire Mutations and Autoimmune Diseases.

Autoimmune diseases were first recognized by Mackay and Macfarlane Burnet in 1962 (Burnet and Mackay 1962). It is defined as the failure of an organism to tolerate its own cells and tissue, resulting in an aberrant immune response by lymphocytes (T-cell-driven disease) and/or antibodies (B-cell-driven disease). Autoimmune diseases can be divided into systemic autoimmune diseases and specific organ- or body-system diseases, including the endocrine, gastro-intestinal, and neurological systems, and it's not uncommon for individuals to experience multiple autoimmune conditions simultaneously. Synergistic effects of climate change and nitrogen use on future nitric oxide emissions from China's croplands.

Accurate quantification of soil nitric oxide (NO) emissions can establish a scientific foundation for developing targeted strategies to mitigate emissions, thereby reducing their environmental impact. Using a database with 476 field measurements across China, a NO emission model was constructed by employing four machine learning algorithms including Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Artificial Neural Network (ANN). Our validation with independent observational data revealed that the XGBoost model performed the best, achieving a R2 of 0.6

Environment-specific fluorescence probe for investigating the detection mechanism of nitric oxide in lakes.

As a highly active trace gas in the atmosphere, nitric oxide (NO) significantly affects the air quality. Additionally, NO plays a key role in lake eutrophication. Therefore, establishing a method for the rapid monitoring of NO emissions from lakes is essential. Detecting NO in water bodies presents challenges, including disruption of in-situ conditions, low temporal resolution, susceptibility to interference from complex water matrices, and insufficient long-term stability. Currently, high temporal and spatial resolution, anti-interference, and convenient detection techniques for lake environm

Impact of Coffee Cherry Fermentation Methods on the Quality Attributes of Dry-Processed Coffee.

The global demand for premium-quality coffee is growing, as more consumers appreciate its distinct sensory attributes. Fermentation plays a key role in producing natural (dry-processed) coffees with distinct and appealing flavors and aromas. However, improper fermentation conditions can lead to defects that negatively impact the quality of the coffee. This research aimed to compare various fermentation methods for producing natural coffees and assess their impact on both sensory attributes and chemical composition. Five fermentation processes were evaluated: exposure to air for 24 and 48 h, fe

Lightweight Multimodal Fusion for Urban Tree Health and Ecosystem Services.

Rapid urban expansion has heightened the demand for accurate, scalable, and real-time methods to assess tree health and the provision of ecosystem services. Urban trees are the major contributors to air-quality improvement and climate change mitigation; however, their monitoring is mostly constrained to inherently subjective and inefficient manual inspections. In order to break this barrier, we put forward a lightweight multimodal deep-learning framework that fuses RGB imagery with environmental and biometric sensor data for a combined evaluation of tree-health condition as well as the estimat
