Analysis of 3-Dimensional Arch Anatomy, Vascular Flow, and Postnatal Outcome in Cases of Suspected Coarctation of the Aorta Using Fetal Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

BACKGROUND: Identifying fetuses at risk of severe neonatal coarctation of the aorta (CoA) can be lifesaving but is notoriously challenging in clinical practice with a high rate of false positives. Novel fetal 3-dimensional and phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) offers an unprecedented means of assessing the human fetal cardiovascular system before birth. We performed detailed MRI assessment of fetal vascular morphology and flows in a cohort of fetuses with suspected CoA, correlated with the need for postnatal intervention. METHODS: Women carrying a fetus with suspected CoA on ech

Three-Dimensional Reconstruction of Intracardiac Anatomy Using CTA and Surgical Planning for Double Outlet Right Ventricle: Early Experience at a Tertiary Care Congenital Heart Center.

BACKGROUND: Although transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) routinely establishes the diagnosis of double outlet right ventricle (DORV), it can be suboptimal for depicting exact ventricular septal defect (VSD) position, especially with respect to the outflow tracts. Advanced imaging with computed tomography angiography (CTA) can help visualize structures and relationships not easily seen by echo. Using computer-aided design, we have the ability to create three-dimensional (3D) models of the intracardiac anatomy, which can be helpful for better depicting the overall anatomy to assist surgical pla

Three-dimensional contrast medium-enhanced computed tomographic cisternography for preoperative evaluation of surgical anatomy of intradural paraclinoid aneurysms of the internal carotid artery: technical note.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Precise preoperative evaluation is especially important when internal carotid artery aneurysms in the paraclinoid region are clipped, because these vascular structures are located in close proximity to various important structures such as the optic nerve and anterior clinoid process. We report a new method for "simultaneously" describing the interrelationships among the aneurysm, internal carotid artery, optic nerve, and bony structures with three-dimensional contrast medium-enhanced computed tomographic (3-D CMECT) cisternography. METHODS: Informed consent was obtai

The Effect of Overall Limb Torsion on Functional Femoral Version and Its Functional and Biomechanical Implications on Lower Limb Axial Anatomy: A Study on CT and EOS Imaging.

Background: Variations in femoral version are increasingly recognized as contributing factors to the development of symptomatic femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) and ischiofemoral impingement (IFI). Despite having implications for both hip arthroplasty and hip preservation surgery, functional femoral version (FFV) and overall limb torsion (OLT) are understudied. This study was conducted with the primary aim of defining and measuring FFV as a function of OLT. Methods: A cohort of 106 patients scheduled for primary hip arthroplasty underwent detailed retrospective assessment through CT and EOS

Tomographic tract tracing and data driven approaches to unravel complex 3D fiber anatomy of DBS relevant prefrontal projections to the diencephalic-mesencephalic junction in the marmoset.

BACKGROUND: Understanding prefrontal cortex projections to diencephalic-mesencephalic junction (DMJ), especially to subthalamic nucleus (STN) and ventral mesencephalic tegmentum (VMT) helps our comprehension of Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) in major depression (MD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Fiber routes are complex and tract tracing studies in non-human primate species (NHP) have yielded conflicting results. The superolateral medial forebrain bundle (slMFB) is a promising target for DBS in MD and OCD. It has become a focus of criticism owing to its name and its diffusion weighted

Step-by-step demonstration of laparoscopic laterally extended endopelvic resection for a recurrent endometrial cancerous tumor at a sciatic foramen, with a detailed explanation of the pelvic sidewall anatomy.

OBJECTIVE: Laterally extended endopelvic resection (LEER) is regarded as a surgical salvage therapy for patients with laterally recurrent gynecologic carcinomas [1]. A prerequisite for R0 resection using this excision technique is carcinoma location remote from the sciatic foramen [1,2]. However, considering the advantages provided by laparoscopy in terms of visualization and dissection, laparoscopic LEER can potentially be used to achieve R0 resection of a laterally recurrent carcinoma at the sciatic foramen [3]. METHODS: The patient underwent an abdominal radical hysterectomy, bilateral sal

The molecular anatomy of human Hsp60 and its similarity with that of bacterial orthologs and acetylcholine receptor reveal a potential pathogenetic role of anti-chaperonin immunity in myasthenia gravis.

Heat-shock protein 60 (Hsp60) is ubiquitous and highly conserved being present in eukaryotes and prokaryotes, including pathogens. This chaperonin, although typically a mitochondrial protein, can also be found in other intracellular sites, extracellularly, and in circulation. Thus, it can signal the immune system and participate in the development of inflammation and immune reactions. Both phenomena can be elicited by human and foreign Hsp60 (e.g., bacterial GroEL), when released into the blood by infectious agents. Consequently, all these Hsp60 proteins become part of a complex autoimmune res

Echocardiography and coronary CT angiography imaging of variations in coronary anatomy and coronary abnormalities in athletic children: detection of coronary abnormalities that create a risk for sudden death.

In a recent publication, Maron et al. reported the causes of sudden death in athletes from data collected in the US National Registry of Sudden Death in Athletes at the Minneapolis Heart Institute Registry. It is not surprising that in this study, cardiovascular disease is reported as the most common cause of sudden death in athletes (56%). The most frequently encountered cardiac pathology was hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (36% of the population who died of cardiac disease). Coronary artery anomalies of wrong sinus origin were next in frequency (17%). Less common causes attributed to coronary pa
