Cyclin D1, a key regulator of the cell cycle, acts as an oncogene when over-expressed in several types of cancer. In some B-chronic lymphoproliferative disorders, the over-expression of cyclin D1 protein is thought to confer a proliferative phenotype. PURPOSE: The relationship between apoptosis induced by 42 degrees C and 44 degrees C hyperthermia alone or in combination with verapamil and changes in intracellular Ca(2+) concentration ([Ca(2+)]i) was investigated in U937 cells.
METHODS: Apoptosis induced by hyperthermia was assessed according to DNA fragmentation, nuclear morphologic changes, and expression of phosphatidylserine on the outside plasma cell membrane. These changes were measured by flow cytometry. The [Ca(2+)]i of individual cells after hyperthermia was monitored by a digital image-analyzing technique using Fura-2.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the concentration of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in follicular fluid and in granulosa cell cultures in relation to the degree of apoptosis in granulosa cells from patients with different types of ovarian response to controlled ovarian hyperstimulation.

Hypocellularity after joint infection has been attributed to the cytotoxic effects of pus, which can cause necrosis of chondrocytes. In this study, primary cultures of human chondrocytes lost their viability and underwent necrosis rapidly with high inocula of Staphylococcus aureus infection. Chondrocytes were shown to undergo apoptosis with low inocula of Staphylococcus aureus or their culture ultrafiltrate. Apoptosis was measured in rat alveolar macrophage NR8383 cells challenged in vitro with respirable quartz or kaolin dust and with the dusts pretreated with dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine (DPPC) to model conditioning of respired dusts by interaction with a primary phospholipid component of pulmonary surfactant. Quartz dust is known to induce apoptosis in vitro and in vivo. For this study, quartz and kaolin were compared as dusts of similar cytotoxicity in some in vitro assays but of differing pathogenic potential: quartz can cause significant pulmonary fibrosis while kaolin generally does not.
