The association between reduction in inflammation and changes in lipoprotein levels and HDL cholesterol efflux capacity in rheumatoid arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Potent anti-inflammatory rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treatments are associated with reduced cardiovascular risk as well as increases in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. This apparent paradox may be explained by favorable changes in other lipid measurements. The objective of this study was to determine the longitudinal association between changes in inflammation with advanced lipoprotein measurements and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol efflux capacity. METHODS AND RESULTS: We conducted this study in a longitudinal RA cohort from a large academic center, including

Decreased circulating visfatin is associated with improved disease activity in early rheumatoid arthritis: data from the PERAC cohort.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate circulating visfatin and its relationship with disease activity and serum lipids in patients with early, treatment-naïve rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS: Serum visfatin was measured in 40 patients with early RA before and after three months of treatment and in 30 age- and sex-matched healthy individuals. Disease activity was assessed using the Disease Activity Score for 28 joints (DAS28) at baseline and at three and 12 months. Multivariate linear regression analysis was performed to evaluate whether improved disease activity is related to serum visfatin or a change i

Bacillus Calmette-Guérin associated arthropathy mimicking undifferentiated spondyloarthropathy.

The development of an inflammatory arthritis mimicking an undifferentiated spondyloarthropathy (SpA) was seen in a patient being treated for a superficial bladder cancer with intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG). Physical findings included classic dactylitis of both feet. This is the fourth report identifying a patient with BCG induced articular findings suggestive of a SpA with dactylitis. Studies of BCG stimulated cytokine secretion from peripheral blood mononuclear cells showed the patient to have enhanced interleukin 6 (IL-6) levels and reduced interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) levels. Some nutritional parameters in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Its was our aim to appreciate the respective influence of age, sex, duration of disease, inflammatory status and treatment on protein markers in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Serum albumin (SA), thyroxin-binding prealbumin (TBPA), transferrin and retinol-binding protein (RBP) were determined in 155 RA patients. Since the cut off, levels of these proteins are highly dependent on sex and age, several groups of sex- and age-matched normal controls were evaluated. The levels of SA (p < 0.03) and RBP (p < 0.002) were reduced in the women under 45 years of age. SA and RBP reached a nadir

[Significance of C-reactive protein in pediatric diagnosis].

The present review summarizes the results of C-reactive protein determinations in the serum of 9100 infants and children and gives a survey on data presented in the literature. Quantitative estimations of CRP are a useful screening method for the evaluation of infections and the activity of inflammatory processes in chronic diseases. In a variety of diseases CRP correlates well with erythrocyte sedimentation rate. CRP is, however, superior to ESR in showing faster dynamics and being uninfluenced by anemia, nephrotic syndrome or renal insufficiency. Marked elevations of CRP concentration may he

Nongonococcal urethritis.

Nongonococcal urethritis is a frequent genital infection, in most cases caused by Chlamydia trachomatis or Ureaplasma urealyticum. Diagnosis requires demonstration of urethritis and exclusion of Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection. Preferred treatment is seven days of tetracycline hydrochloride or doxycycline, to both the patient and partners. Physical sequelae are infrequent but include epididymitis and Reiter's syndrome.

Dietary fiber intake and rheumatoid arthritis among U.S. adults: Evidence from a cross-sectional analysis of NHANES with inflammatory markers as mediators.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease in which diet may play a role. Dietary fiber has been suggested to reduce systemic inflammation, yet evidence on its relationship with RA remains limited. We examined whether dietary fiber intake is associated with RA prevalence and whether this association is mediated by inflammatory markers. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 15,114 U.S. adults aged ≥20 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 2010-2020). Dietary fiber intake was assessed using two 24-h dietary recalls. R

Circulating cell-free DNA as a potential biomarker for prediction of disease activity and prognosis among Egyptian rheumatoid arthritis patients.

Cell-free DNA (cfDNA) has emerged as a potential biomarker for assessing disease activity and prognosis in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, the association between cfDNA levels and the established RA markers of inflammation and disease severity remains unclear. The current study aimed to detect plasma levels of cfDNA in patients with RA and to investigate their association with RA activity indicators (erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP), disease activity score-28 (DAS28)), prognostic markers (rheumatoid factor (RF), anticitrullinated protein antibodies (ACPA)), an

GMI, an Immunomodulatory Peptide from Ganoderma microsporum, Restrains Periprosthetic Joint Infections via Modulating the Functions of Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cells and Effector T Cells.

Periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs) caused by Staphylococcus aureus infection are difficult to treat due to antibiotic resistance. It is known that the biofilms from methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) promote expansion of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) to suppress T-cell proliferation and benefit bacterial infections. This study finds that GMI, a fungal immunomodulatory peptide isolated from Ganoderma microsporum, suppresses MDSC expansion to promote the proliferation of cytotoxic T cells. The enhancement is likely attributed to increased expression of IL-6 and TNF-α and reduc
