Polymorphisms of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) and cluster of differentiation 36 (CD36) associated with valproate-induced obesity in epileptic patients.

RATIONALE: Valproate (VPA) is a choice for the treatment of primary generalized epilepsies and partial epilepsies. Unfortunately, weight gain or obesity is one of the most frequent adverse effects of VPA treatment. Genetic factors were shown to be involved in the effect. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the association of selected single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of cluster of differentiation 36 (CD36) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) with VPA-induced weight gain and obesity in epileptic patients. METHODS: A total of 225 Chinese Han epilepsy p

Weight gain since age of 20 as risk of metabolic syndrome even in non-overweight individuals.

PURPOSE: Metabolic syndrome (MetS), regardless of the presence of obesity, is known as a risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Weight gain after age 20 reported to be associated with these diseases. Impact of the difference between the body mass index (BMI) at examination and BMI at age 20 (ΔBMIexa-20y) on MetS, especially in non-overweight individuals, remains to be elucidated. METHODS: We analyzed the data of 24,363 individuals (14,301 men and 10,062 women) in this cross-sectional study. The diagnosis of MetS was diagnosed when three or more of the following criteria were present: hy

Intentional Weight Loss and Longevity in Overweight Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: A Population-Based Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the influence of weight loss on long-term morbidity and mortality in overweight (BMI≥25 kg/m2) patients with type 2 diabetes, and tested the hypothesis that therapeutic intentional weight loss supervised by a medical doctor prolongs life and reduces the risk for cardiovascular disease in these patients. METHODS: This is a 19 year cohort study of patients in the intervention arm of the randomized clinical trial Diabetes Care in General Practice. Weight and prospective intentions for weight loss were monitored every third month for six years in 761 consecutive pat

Does the timing of parental migration matter for child growth? A life course study on left-behind children in rural China.

BACKGROUND: China's unprecedented internal migration has left 61 million rural children living apart from parents. This study investigates how being left behind is associated with children's growth, by examining children's height and weight trajectories by age, testing the accumulation and critical period life course hypotheses. METHODS: Data were drawn from five waves of the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS). Multiple cohorts of children under 6 years old from 1997-2009 were examined (N = 2,555). Growth curve models investigated whether height and weight trajectories differ for childr

Body mass index and metabolic parameters in patients with schizophrenia during long-term treatment with paliperidone palmitate.

BACKGROUND: There is a strong association between weight gain and metabolic events in patients with schizophrenia receiving many of the second-generation antipsychotic agents. We explored the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and metabolic events in patients with schizophrenia receiving long-acting injectable paliperidone palmitate (PP) in a long-term trial. METHODS: We conducted a post hoc analysis of data from a PP study that included a 33-week open-label transition (TR) and maintenance phase; a variable duration, randomized, double-blind (DB), placebo-controlled phase and a 52-wee

Abnormal weight gain and gut microbiota modifications are side effects of long-term doxycycline and hydroxychloroquine treatment.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Doxycycline has been proposed for the treatment of malnourished children in developing countries, and its use has been associated with weight gain in healthy volunteers. No previous studies have assessed abnormal weight gain as a putative side effect of long-term doxycycline treatment; thus, the objective of the present study was to characterize this phenomenon. We also analyzed the role of the gut microbiota in this effect. We assessed changes in the body mass index in Q fever endocarditis patients treated with doxycycline and hydroxychloroquine and healthy individuals with no antibiotic trea

Adjunctive effects of aripiprazole on metabolic profiles: comparison of patients treated with olanzapine to patients treated with other atypical antipsychotic drugs.

Metabolic abnormalities are serious adverse effects of atypical antipsychotic treatment. This study aims to determine the effects of adjunctive aripiprazole on metabolic profiles among patients receiving treatment with atypical antipsychotics, and to examine whether these effects are different from that of pre-existing atypical antipsychotics. In the 8-week open-label trial, aripiprazole was added to patients who were receiving treatment with atypical antipsychotics and had experienced weight gain or dyslipidemia. The dosage of pre-existing atypical antipsychotics was fixed, while the dosage o

Utilization of the sex-linked gene for imperfect albinism (S*ALS). 2. Yolk sac lipid utilization.

The gene for sex-linked imperfect albinism (S*ALS) has been associated with reduced early growth and slow utilization of the yolk sac contents. Neonatal growth was studied using albino and nonalbino full siblings that were dissected at 2-d intervals from Day 16 of incubation to 7 d after hatch. Fatty acid composition of the yolk, yolk sac membrane, and liver was determined to study neonatal lipid metabolism. At hatch, albinos had similar BW and lower (P < 0.01) liver weights, suggesting reduced lipid transfer from the yolk sac during late incubation. Nonalbinos started gaining weight at 3 d af

Energy expenditure in children with Down syndrome: correcting metabolic rate for movement.

Children with Down syndrome (DS) have a high prevalence of obesity. To investigate the relation between energy expenditure and obesity, we measured body composition, resting metabolic rate (RMR), and total energy expenditure in 13 prepubescent children with DS and in 10 control subjects matched for age, weight, and percentage of fat, using indirect calorimetry and the doubly labeled water method. Measurement of RMR was complicated by excessive movement by both the DS and control subjects. We therefore developed a method of subtracting the energy expended in movement and calculated the correcte

Macroorchidism and fragile X in mentally retarded males. Clinical, cytogenetic, and some hormonal investigations in mentally retarded males, including two with the fragile site at Xq28, fra(X)(q28).

One hundred and seventy eight males resident in an institution for the mentally retarded were screened clinically for the presence of macroorchidism, using the standard orchidometer. In this way 52 males with a testicular volume of 25 ml and over were found. Of these, 11 had pronounced macroorchidism (above 25 ml). All 52 males were examined cytogenetically for the fragile X. Two patients with pronounced macroorchidism showed this abnormality. Although the other nine patients with pronounced macroorchidism were reexamined with FUdR-addition to blood cultures, no further cases positive for the

Gestational weight gain and its associated factors in Harari Regional State: Institution based cross-sectional study, Eastern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Gestational weight gain is an important factor that supports optimal outcome for mothers and their infant. Whereas women who do not gain enough weight during pregnancy have a risk of bearing a baby with low birth weight, those who gain excessive weight are at increased risk of preeclampsia and gestational diabetes. Nonetheless, data on gestational weight gain and its determinants are scarce in developing countries, as it is difficult to collect the information throughout the pregnancy period. Therefore, the aim of the study was to assess weight gain during pregnancy and its associa
