INTRODUCTION: Studies regarding the development of metallosis following open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of fractures are rarely found in orthopedic literature. The aim of the current study was to assess metallosis following ORIF using distal fibular locking plates to treat distal fibular fractures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 69 patients who underwent surgery using locking compression plates to treat lateral malleolar fractures, with a minimum 1-year follow-up period and subsequent hardware removal were enrolled in our study. We divided the patients into 2 groups, to compare the compli

Several anatomic plates for fixation of the olecranon after a fracture or an osteotomy are commercially available. They serve as an alternative for tension band wiring, which is associated with a relatively high complication rate. Plating of the olecranon reportedly might result in nonunion or malunion and eventually may require revision surgery or plate removal because of skin irritation. The authors describe a proximal periprosthetic avulsion fracture of the tip of the olecranon as a unique complication associated with the use of an anatomic plate for fixation of an olecranon osteotomy. This

BACKGROUND: The deltopectoral approach is commonly used for plate stabilization of proximal humerus fracture. Although adhesions between the deltoid, plate, and humerus are common sequelae of plate ORIF, little is known about their effect on the range of movement and a function of the shoulder. To confirm their impact, the preoperative and intraoperative evaluation of the range of motion (ROM) was measured during the sequential arthroscopic release of adhesions, with special regard to external rotation. Postoperative ROM and subjective shoulder function were also evaluated.
METHODS: Eighteen

Distal Radius fractures (DRF) are one of the most common injuries in the upper extremity and incidence is expected to rise due to a growing elderly population. The complex decision to treat patients operatively or conservatively depends on a large variety of parameters which have to be considered. No unanimous consensus has been reached yet, which operative approach and fixation technique would produce the best postoperative functional results with lowest complication rates. This article addresses the available evidence for indications, approaches, reduction, and fixation techniques in treatin

PURPOSE: Using palmar plating to treat complex intraarticular distal radius fractures is standard of care. However, fracture fragments can also be managed using a dorsal approach with arthrotomy, which is useful when treating fractures involving the dorsal joint aspect. We compared radiological and clinical outcomes after dorsal plating with or without an intraoperative arthrotomy.
METHODS: 31 of the 359 patients with a distal radius fracture had an AO Type 2R3 C3 fracture surgically treated using a dorsal approach (01/2015-10/2018). Fractures other than C3 were excluded from this analysis. G

INTRODUCTION: Non-union of the radius and ulna is a major complication of forearm fractures, accounting upto 10% of all forearm fractures. Multiple modalities are available for the treatment of non-union. Vascular grafts are a less sought-after surgical choice owing to the need of expertise and skills of surgeons. We discuss a case of gap non-union of fracture shaft radius treated with vascular fibula graft.
CASE REPORT: We describe a case of 45yr old lady with closed fracture of both bones of left forearm. She underwent open reduction and internal fixation with 3.5 small DCP (6 hole) two days

Although volar locked plating (VLP) of distal radius fractures is common, complications remain a considerable concern for upper extremity specialists using modern techniques. Complications following VLP of DR fractures were recorded prospectively from January 2005 to January 2017. Fractures were characterized using the AO classification, and complications were described by severity. Severe complications required operative treatment and/or resulted in permanent impairment, moderate complications required nonoperative treatment, and mild complications resolved without intervention.
