Acetoacetate-preconditioned adipose stem cells promote burn wound healing through enhanced cellular retention and paracrine signaling.

BACKGROUND: In this study, we preconditioned human adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) with acetoacetate (AcAc) and explored whether it could improve cell survival and enhance the tissue regeneration of chemical burns in mice. METHODS: To evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of AcAc, human ADSCs were preconditioned with 10 mM AcAc (AcAc-hADSCs). Cell proliferation, migration, paracrine release of growth factors, and proangiogenic effects of AcAc-hADSCs were subsequently assessed. Subsequently, HCl acid burns were induced on the dorsal skin of ICR mice, and wound healing progression was monitored …

Oral Dysaesthetic and Perceptual Disorder, A Distinct Subset of Chronic Orofacial Pain Without Burning Symptoms: A Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: According to the ICOP 2020, Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS) is a chronic orofacial pain disorder characterised by an intraoral burning sensation, which represents the main diagnostic criterion. However, some patients experience other symptoms such as xerostomia, taste alterations, and globus, without the burning sensation (non-BMS). OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore non-BMS as a distinct subclinical entity by comparing the classical BMS with this new group of patients in a case-control study, addressing gaps in current diagnostic criteria. METHODS: Eighty-three non-BMS patients

Metabolomic and redox alterations in liver cells exposed to biomass burning pollution mixture differ by fatty acids-induced NAFLD.

Biomass burning (BB), a significant source of atmospheric pollutants, produces wood tar (WT) particulates, composing a considerable portion of carbonaceous aerosols that pose health risks. Among these health risks is nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a widely spread condition worldwide. This study uses untargeted metabolomics and functional assays to investigate how pre-existing metabolic conditions, modeled as NAFLD, influence liver cell responses to BB exposure. Human HepG2 cells were pre-incubated with either lauric acid (LA), a saturated fatty acid (FA), or oleic acid (OA), an unsa

Long-term health-related quality of life after a deep second- or third-degree burn treated with skin grafting.

BACKGROUND: As burns are known to have a negative impact on the burn victim's quality of life, the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is a key outcome in the evaluation of burn treatment. In recent years there has been increasing interest in the use of HRQoL instruments after burn injury. The aim of this study was to assess whether there is a correlation between the HRQoL and the total body surface area (TBSA)% burned and also to assess correlation between the SCAR-Q scores and the TBSA% burned in deep burns requiring skin grafting. METHODS: Participants were adult burn patients treated i…

To burn or valorise bark from a pulp mill: Environmental sustainability analysis using prospective consequential life cycle assessment.

Bark represents 10 % dry weight of spruce trees and is a major side stream from pulp production. Currently, pulp mills burn bark to produce energy with a low economic value, directly emitting biogenic carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. Biorefining bark using a continuous flow-through fractionation process generates high added-value compounds (tall oil, starch, phenol, and pulp) that allow for extended carbon storage durations. This study assesses the potential future environmental impacts of valorising bark instead of burning it. We conduct a LCA study combining a prospective consequential mode

Postoperative acute kidney injury and risk factors for major adverse kidney events within 30 days of burn surgery.

BACKGROUND: Burn injuries can lead to severe complications across multiple organ systems, with kidney impairment being particularly common and clinically significant. Major adverse kidney events within 30 days post-surgery (MAKE30)-including death, initiation of new renal replacement therapy, or prolonged renal dysfunction-are increasingly used in clinical research to assess mid-term renal outcomes. However, studies on the incidence and risk factors of MAKE30 in burn patients remain limited. METHODS: We included burn patients admitted to a single-center burn intensive care unit between 2012 a

Introducing heat-not-burn tobacco improves hematocrit and cigarette smoking-related symptoms in patients with smokers' polycythemia and polycythemia vera.

Cigarette smoking induces relative and absolute erythrocytosis (smokers' polycythemia). In patients with smokers' polycythemia complicated by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the incidence and mortality rate of pulmonary embolism increase. Therefore, improving erythrocytosis by smoking cessation is important; however, smoking cessation is often difficult to achieve. This study investigated the influence of introducing heat-not-burn tobacco in patients with smokers' polycythemia. Fifteen smokers with erythrocytosis were diagnosed with smokers' polycythemia (n = 13) or polycythemia vera (n

Isolation and characterization of Sporomusa carbonis sp. nov.: a carboxydotrophic hydrogenogen in the genus of Sporomusa isolated from a charcoal-burning pile.

A Gram-negative bacterial strain, designated ACPtT, was isolated from the top of the covering soil of an active charcoal-burning pile. The cells of ACPtT were strictly anaerobic, rod-shaped and grew optimally at 40 °C and pH 7. The substrates ribose, glucose, sucrose, raffinose, melezitose, pyruvate, vanillate, syringate, methanol and CO were utilized for growth. Phylogenomic analysis of the 4.1 Mb genome showed that strain ACPtT represented a novel species of the genus Sporomusa. The most closely related species to ACPtT was Sporomusa malonica, with an average amino acid identity of 80.1%. Th

Electronic Structure of the S1 State Manganese Cluster in Photosystem II Investigated Using Q‑Band Selective Hole-Burning.

The electronic structure of the S1 state of photosystem II (PSII) was investigated using selective hole burning of Q-band pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance. The free induction decay and spin-echo signals of the tyrosine radical YD • in the plant PSII oscillated because of the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction with the S1 state Mn cluster. The initial period was 410 ns (2.44 MHz) and was assigned to the S = 1 spin state. Based on the oscillation analysis, both Mn1 and Mn4 and both Mn2 and Mn3 were assigned as Mn-(III) and Mn-(IV), respectively, which is consistent with the quantum chemica
