Knowledge and awareness of breast cancer symptoms, risk factors, and screening barriers among women in Kuwait: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer globally and the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality across all demographics. In Kuwait, the incidence is 50 cases per 100,000 person-years. Delayed detection, often linked to limited awareness of breast cancer symptoms and risk factors, contributes significantly to morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to assess breast cancer knowledge, awareness of symptoms and risk factors, and perceived barriers to screening among women in Kuwait. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 490 employed women aged 18 years a

Nurse-led cancer palliative care compared to oncologist-led cancer palliative care: A retrospective analysis of Chinese patients suffering from cancer and receiving chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Cancer palliative care is recommended by guidelines for patients with early stage of cancer. Unlike the Western countries, in mainland China, cancer patients receive specialist-led cancer palliative care. Nurse-led cancer palliative care (NUC) is not well established yet. OBJECTIVES: To compare the clinical outcome measures, quality of life and symptom distress in patients suffering from cancer who received NUC with the same results in patient who received consulting oncologist-led cancer palliative care (ONC). MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was a chart review of a database of p

Screening of upper digestive tract cancer with dilute hydrochloric acid and alcohol in a Chinese high-risk population--a follow-up study of 12 years.

This is a 12-year follow-up study on screening with a mixture of 2% hydrochloric acid and 18% alcohol for upper digestive tract cancer in a Chinese high-risk population. A public screening for upper digestive tract cancer was conducted from November 1979 to May 1984 by giving a mixture of 2% hydrochloric acid and 18% alcohol to 7280 subjects in high-risk population in Yaocun village, Linxian County, Henan province. The subjects were given 15 ml of this mixture in the morning or at noon before lunch when fasting. Five minutes later, irritative reactions (retrosternal discomfort, warmth, pain or

Sleep disturbance in cancer patients.

Sleep difficulty is a prominent concern of cancer patients, yet there has been no large study of the prevalence and nature of sleep disturbance in cancer patients. This cross-sectional survey study examined: (a) the prevalence of reported sleep problems in patients attending six clinics at a regional cancer centre; (b) sleep problem prevalence in relation to cancer treatment; and (c) the nature of reported insomnia (type, duration, and associated factors). For three months, all patients attending clinics for breast, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, gynecologic, lung, and non-melanoma skin canc

"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger": an ovarian cancer survivor survey.

OBJECTIVES: This survey was designed to learn more about the physical health and quality of life of ovarian cancer survivors without known active disease and not on treatment. METHODS: Women with ovarian cancer without evidence of active disease, and not on treatment for at least 2 years, were recruited in Canada and the United States from university cancer clinics, community ovarian support groups, and a cancer survivor network newsletter and asked to complete an anonymous mail-back survey on their physical, psychological, social, and spiritual well-being. RESULTS: Two-hundred (67.5%) women

Mind-Body Interventions for People With Cancer: Evidence, Innovation, and Implementation.

Many people with cancer (PWC) continue to experience persistent biopsychosocial and existential challenges across the cancer care continuum. Symptoms such as anxiety, depression, cancer-related fatigue and pain, sleep disturbance, fear of cancer recurrence, cognitive impairment, and reduced quality of life remain highly prevalent during and after treatment, underscoring the need for interventions that address both psychological and physiological dimensions of distress. Mind-body interventions encompass a diverse group of practices that explicitly target the bidirectional relationship between m

Brain metastasis from KRAS wild-type pancreatic cancer and organoid correlates: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Although pancreatic cancer is an aggressive malignancy with a propensity for metastatic spread, brain metastases (BrMs) remain exceptionally rare (<1% incidence). CASE DESCRIPTION: We present a case of BrMs in a 69-year-old pancreatic cancer patient. This patient initially presented with a history of chronic pancreatitis, abdominal and back pain, and significant weight loss. After the diagnostic biopsy confirmed pancreatic cancer, the patient was enrolled onto the PASS-01 clinical trial and was treated with standard of care chemotherapy before progressing and developing BrMs 10 mo

[Mechanisms of Exosomes in Lung Cancer Bone Metastasis and Related Clinical Advances].

Lung cancer is the malignant tumor with the highest morbidity and mortality, and it is usually diagnosed with advanced metastasis. Tumor metastasis is an important factor affecting treatment resistance and poor prognosis of lung cancer, among which bone metastasis is a common metastatic pattern of lung cancer and is associated with a particularly dismal prognosis. Meanwhile, bone metastasis frequently causes skeletal-related events such as bone pain, pathological fractures, nerve compression, and hypercalcemia. Exosomes are extracellular vesicles with a diameter of 40-160 nm that are released

Postoperative incision metastasis of lung cancer: A case report.

Incisional recurrence, also known as metastasis to the surgical scar, is a relatively rare but serious complication following the surgical resection of lung cancer. Herein, we report a case of postoperative incision metastasis of lung cancer. A 75-year-old Han Chinese male patient was admitted upon discovery of a chest wall mass during a routine physical examination 3 months ago. The patient underwent a radical resection of left lower lobe lung cancer 12 years ago. Notably, he experienced left chest pain and discomfort during a routine examination 12 years postoperatively, leading to the disco

Bone marrow metastasis of gastric signet ring cell carcinoma complicated by thrombotic microangiopathy: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) is an acute syndrome characterized by microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and multi-organ dysfunction due to the microcirculation of platelet thrombi. Cancer-associated TMA is a rare and fatal complication, which often occurs during cancer remission. It is frequently misdiagnosed because of limited clinical awareness. CASE SUMMARY: A middle-aged female patient presented to our clinic with a 15-days history of back pain, 15 months post-gastrectomy. Cancer-associated TMA was confirmed through bone marrow aspiration, biopsy, and imagi

A Rare Association Between Osteomalacia, Phosphaturic Mesenchymal Tumor, and Ovarian Cancer: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome characterized by hypophosphatemia, bone mineralization disorders with increased risk of fragility fractures, muscle pain, and progressive weakness. TIO has been associated with increased production of the phosphaturic hormone Fibroblast Growth Factor 23 (FGF23) usually by mesenchymal tumors of soft tissue or bone (Phosphaturic Mesenchymal Tumors-PMTs). In rare cases TIO may be observed in association with other malignancies. We report the case of a 66-year-old woman with an occasional diagnosis of both a PMT and an ovarian canc

A Comprehensive Review of Cervical Cancer Screening Devices: The Pros and the Cons.

OBJECTIVE: The low screening coverage and reluctance of women in participation lead to low uptake in cervical screening tests. Hence the majority of cervical cancer patients visiting the hospitals are diagnosed at advanced stage, often leading to poor survival rate. This paper aims to review and compile available cancer screening devices so that more people in this field will adopt suitable devices in cervical cancer screening routine depending on requirements which may encourage the uptake in cervical screening tests. METHODS: This paper reviews devices invented for different cervical cancer

[Reassessment of intersphincteric resection in the sphincter-preserving operation for ultra-low rectal cancer].

Intersphincteric resection (ISR), as an ultra-low sphincter-preserving operation, is widely used in clinical practice at present. ISR can allow some patients with very low rectal cancer to avoid the pain of anal resection while ensuring oncological efficacy. However, the procedure of ISR requires wider intersphincteric dissection which may cause nerve damage, and the removal of partial or total internal anal sphincter as an "inherent defect" of ISR can result in poor anal function postoperatively. Based on the in-depth understanding of regional anatomy and physiological function, the author pr

The facets of psychopathology in patients with cancer: Cross-sectional and longitudinal network analyses.

OBJECTIVE: Cancer patients display heterogeneous psychopathology, comprising depressive, anxiety, hostility, and somatic symptoms. Often, clinical pictures evolve over time deteriorating the individual functioning and prognosis. Network models can reveal the relationships between symptoms, thus providing clinical insights. METHOD: This study examined data of the Brief Symptom Inventory and the Distress Thermometer, from 1108 cancer outpatients. Gaussian Graphical Models were estimated using regularized and non-regularized Bayesian methods. In addition, we used community detection methods to i

Rapidly Progressive Bladder Cancer Diagnosed because of Spontaneous Bladder Rupture.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous bladder rupture (SBR) is very rare and can be associated with advanced bladder cancer. Because of its rarity, the optimal management of bladder cancer with SBR has not been established. Herein, we report a case of SBR due to locally advanced bladder cancer, which rapidly invaded the ileum and caused peritoneal dissemination. Case Presentation. An 86-year-old man presented with sudden-onset lower abdominal pain and distension. The patient was diagnosed with bladder perforation and bladder tumor on contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT). Transurethral resection of t

Dual Actions of Ketorolac in Metastatic Ovarian Cancer.

Cytoreductive surgery and chemotherapy are cornerstones of ovarian cancer treatment, yet disease recurrence remains a significant clinical issue. Surgery can release cancer cells into the circulation, suppress anti-tumor immunity, and induce inflammatory responses that support the growth of residual disease. Intervention within the peri-operative window is an under-explored opportunity to mitigate these consequences of surgery and influence the course of metastatic disease to improve patient outcomes. One drug associated with improved survival in cancer patients is ketorolac. Ketorolac is a ch

Streptococcal toxic-shock syndrome due to Streptococcus dysgalactiae subspecies equisimilis in breast cancer-related lymphedema: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer-related lymphedema often causes cellulitis and is one of the most common complications after breast cancer surgery. Streptococci are the major pathogens underlying such cellulitis. Among the streptococci, the importance of the Lancefield groups C and G is underappreciated; most cases involve Streptococcus dysgalactiae subspecies equisimilis. Despite having a relatively weak toxicity compared with group A streptococci, Streptococcus dysgalactiae subspecies equisimilis is associated with a mortality rate that is as high as that of group A streptococci in cases of invasi

Adjuvant Treatment of Early Breast Cancer in the Elderly.

Breast cancer is common in the elderly, as more than 50% of these tumors are diagnosed in patients aged 65 years or older. Elderly women may also delay reporting or underreport to their physician suspicious symptoms and lesions, so that breast cancer is more likely to be diagnosed at a more advanced stage, with putatively inferior outcomes. Adjuvant hormonal therapy has clear benefits for all women with hormone receptor-positive early breast cancer, despite the fact that it is still under-prescribed in elderly women, but the benefits of tamoxifen are more evident than that observed in younger
