Infants diagnosed with Pierre Robin sequence frequently have airway obstruction. In severe cases of obstruction, mandibular distraction osteogenesis (MDO) can alleviate the airway blockage through elongation of the mandible and subsequent anterior placement of the tongue. However, there are several complications associated with MDO in the very young child. Among those are injuries to teeth that develop in the area of the MDO osteotomies. Such injuries include distalization and/or morphologic anomalies of primary and permanent molars. We describe a case of an unusual macrodontia of the primary

Myositis ossificans traumatica (MOT) is a focal reactive ossification of muscle that typically occurs secondary to a single acute high-impact trauma or multiple chronic low-grade traumas. The disease is often limited to a single muscle and can occur throughout the body. Ossification of the muscles in the head and neck region is extremely rare but can occur after falls, motor vehicle accidents, blunt force trauma, or surgical procedures such as extractions and local infiltration. The purpose of this paper is to present the case of a seven-year-old girl with trismus and calcification within her

Purpose: To determine if there is a positive correlation between increased body mass index (BMI) and dental development in children.
Methods: The records of 500 six- to 13-year-old children were reviewed, and 250 were included in the study. BMI was calculated for each patient. Panoramic radiographs were evaluated, and dental age was estimated using Cameriere's formula. Delta values (dental age, chronological age) were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test. All tests of hypotheses were two-sided at an alpha level of 0.05.
Results: A statistically significant difference in delta was obs

Pachyonychia congenita (PC) is a rare autosomal dominant condition caused by heterozygous mutation in one of five keratin genes. The purpose of this paper is to report a five-day-old infant with PC whose initial presentation revealed multiple malformed natal teeth and gingival lesions on the alveolar crest. Further investiga- tions led to genetic molecular testing of the child and his parents, which revealed a de novo and novel missense variant of KRT17 (c. 307C>T, p. Arg103Cys), resulting in a non-conservative amino-acid substitution and a diagnosis of PC. This case high- lights the need for

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is a genetic condition characterized by abnormal development of two or more structures of the ectoderm, such as skin, hair, nails, teeth, or sweat glands. The most common dental anomalies are oligodontia and anodontia but taurodontism has also been described. These patients present a decrease of alveolar bone volume and alveolar ridge tapering due to congenitally missing teeth. The purpose of this report is to describe the case of a six-year-old girl diagnosed with HED who presented with conical teeth, taurodontic molars, and multiple agenesis that decre

Venous malformations (VMs) are part of the spectrum of vascular malformations composed of ectatic venous channels. VMs of the oral cavity in pediatric patients are relatively rare but reportedly carry a higher rate of rupture than in adults. We describe the management of an 18-month-old boy with VM who presented with a localized dome-shaped swelling measuring approximately 9.4 mm by 7.4 mm in the anterior third of the palate. Management with sclerotherapy using an intralesional injection of three percent sodium tetradecyl sulphate was used to treat the lesion with minimum armamentarium, cost,

Congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis (CIPA), also known as hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type IV, is a rare autosomal recessive condition. CIPA is caused by mutations in the NTRK1 gene, leading to the inability to feel pain and decreased or absent sweating (anhidrosis). The signs and symptoms of CIPA may not be easily diagnosed at birth, but repeated severe injuries or unintentional self-injurious behavior during infancy may prompt further investigation leading to a CIPA diagnosis. We present the case of an 18-month old child who was diagnosed with CIPA, after repeate

Radicular cysts arising from primary teeth are uncommon and, when present as large lesions, may adversely affect the underlying permanent teeth. The purpose of this paper is to describe the management of a very large atypical radicular cyst involving the primary dentition of a nine-year-old boy and causing extensive tooth displacement with transposition of the permanent maxillary left canine between the bicuspids. The root apex of the canine was close to the median level of the lateral border of the nasal cavity and showed incomplete root formation and signs of dilacerations in its apical thir

Purpose: To compare the accuracy of dental age (DA) estimates in children using the Demirjian method and the proportion of root resorption in primary teeth. Methods: Panoramic images from 497 children aged three to 11.99 years were evaluated. Individuals were classified in five groups of two-year age intervals. Seven permanent teeth in the left mandible were scored based on diagrams developed by Demirjian. The proportion of root resorption was determined in the primary mandibular left canine and primary second molar, and age was estimated according to the length of root resorption (one quarter,

Natal and neonatal teeth are rare features that can lead to various issues, from traumatic injuries and feeding difficulties to more severe problems, such as risk of aspiration due to excessive mobility of teeth. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the diagnosis and management of natal and neonatal teeth, and describe three cases of newborns with natal teeth. Decision processes and management are detailed regarding the specificity of each case. Periodic follow-up is recommended to maintain oral health and prevent any issues related to premature loss or eruption of primary teeth. A close co

Regional odontodysplasia is a non-hereditary development dental anomaly involving epithelial and mesenchymal-derived dental tissues. The condition affects both primary and permanent teeth. Clinically, affected teeth are hypoplastic, soft upon probing, have a yellow-brown discoloration and present high susceptibility to caries. Radiographically, the teeth show enlarged pulp chambers, open apices and no clear differentiation between enamel and dentin. The reduced radiopacity of the enamel and dentin gave rise to the term ghost teeth. We present the case of a three-year-old boy diagnosed with reg

Localized gingival enlargement associated with vitamin C deficiency (scurvy) is rarely encountered in the modern era. The purpose of this paper is to report a case of extensive inflammatory gingival enlargement in the mandibular anterior region associated with vitamin C deficiency in a 10 year-old boy. There was a significant improvement of the gingival enlargement seven days after starting oral vitamin C supplementation. Vitamin C deficiency should be included in the differential diagnosis of any gingival enlargement, especially in children.

Gingival squamous papilloma (SP) is a mucocutanous, benign proliferation rarely seen in the pediatric population. The majority of publications of affected younger patients have been confined to datasets from clinicopathologic investigations. A limited number of case reports in this age group have appeared in the literature, usually featuring primary gingival lesions. Recognition of recurrent gingival SPs in pediatric patients has been underappreciated. The purpose of this report is to present the case of a four-year-old boy with a gingival SP that recurred twice within 18 months and to increas

Moyamoya disease is a rare progressive cerebral arteriopathy associated with risk of ischemic and hemorrhagic brain complications. The dental care of affected individuals should be performed in a pain- and stress-free manner to decrease the chance of occurrence of episodes of hypocapnia, hypercapnia, hypotension, hypovolemia, and hypothermia. Dental treatment may be provided in an outpatient dental setting or in a hospital setting, but both venues require interdisciplinary collaboration to ensure safe delivery of patient care. In cases of general anesthesia, the perioperative management must b
