Retinopathy of prematurity risk prediction for infants with birth weight less than 1251 grams.

OBJECTIVE: To predict retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) exam findings among infants with birth weight <1251 g from 32-40 weeks postmenstrual age (PMA). STUDY DESIGN: Secondary analysis of 3714 eye exams from 1239 infants. RESULTS: The likelihood of developing type 1 ROP by 40 weeks PMA varied by gestational age (GA) (P < .001), from 33% for ≤25 weeks, 10% for 26 or 27 weeks, 4% for 28 or 29 weeks, and none for ≥30 weeks. By 40 weeks PMA, 51% with GA ≤27 weeks still needed subsequent exams. Previous exam findings, GA, and PMA were predictive of the development of type 1 ROP (area under the cur

Summary of CDC consultation to address social determinants of health for prevention of disparities in HIV/AIDS, viral hepatitis, sexually transmitted diseases, and tuberculosis. December 9-10, 2008.

In December 2008, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) convened a meeting of national public health partners to identify priorities for addressing social determinants of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), viral hepatitis, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and tuberculosis (TB). The consultants were divided into four working groups: (1) public health policy, (2) data systems, (3) agency partnerships and prevention capacity building, and (4) prevention research and evaluation. Groups focused on identifying top priorities; describing

Framework model of product risk assessment.

Risk assessment has been a vital tool in the consumer product safety arena. However, the challenges have been to ensure scientific and robust assessments and to eliminate diverging risk results. Back in year 2005, EuroSafe took the initiative and orchestrated a working group (WG) on risk assessment (EuroSafe WGRA). The WG includes subject experts from regulatory bodies and industry. In the past 2 years the WG has devoted itself to vigorous research in the harmonisation of nomenclatures and the identification of basic principles of non-food consumer product risk assessment. More importantly, it

Abnormal mammogram follow-up: do community lay health advocates make a difference?

This pilot study evaluates a community lay health advocate (CLHA) intervention in promoting follow-up for abnormal mammograms among African American women. A controlled trial was implemented at an urban hospital in Atlanta, with 48 women in a CLHA intervention group and 35 in a usual care group. Participants were 25 or older and had an abnormal mammogram between March 25, 2002, and May 2, 2003. Intervention group women received CLHA support including encouragement of timely abnormal mammogram follow-up, reminders of follow-up appointments, identification and removal of barriers to follow-up, a

High exposure to Tunga penetrans (Linnaeus, 1758) correlates with intensity of infestation.

Tungiasis is a parasitic skin disease widespread in resource-poor urban and rural communities in Brazil. Inhabitants of an urban slum in Northeast Brazil were examined for the presence of tungiasis lesions and followed-up twice a week for a period of three weeks. Each time the number, stages, and topographic localization of lesions were recorded on a documentation sheet. The infestation rate (number of newly embedded sand fleas per individual and day) remained stable during the observation period. The infestation rate was significantly related to the intensity of infestation (total number of l

Geriatric team dynamics: the dietitian's role.

In 1980, a geriatric consultation team was formed at Massachusetts General Hospital to meet the complex medical, psychological, rehabilitative, nutritional, and social needs of geriatric patients. This team strives to provide elderly patients with the comprehensive care necessary to potentiate return to maximum independent functioning and to change attitudes of primary caretakers toward care of geriatric patients through increased recognition of the elderly as a heterogeneous group. The team consults on patients with changes in mental status, need for physical rehabilitation, "failure to thriv

Standardized communication and workflow redesign in hemorrhoid surgery: A quality improvement initiative.

OBJECTIVE: Hemorrhoidal disease is highly prevalent, yet patient reluctance to undergo surgery often stems from inadequate preoperative communication, fear of postoperative pain, and unclear recovery expectations. This quality improvement initiative evaluated whether standardized patient communication combined with workflow redesign could improve surgical decision-making, care continuity, and operational efficiency in hemorrhoid surgery. METHODS: A single-center, retrospective before-after study was conducted at a tertiary medical center in Taiwan. We included adults with grade III-IV hemorrh

Systematic adaptation of a visual-aided adolescent nutrition intervention from peri-urban Burkina Faso for rural Uganda using intervention mapping.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) aged 10–24 years in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), including rural Uganda, frequently exhibit low nutrition literacy and poor diet quality, increasing their risk of malnutrition and diet-related non-communicable diseases. Many nutrition interventions are developed in high-income or school-based settings, limiting their relevance for low-income, rural, and out-of-school populations. Context-specific, community-anchored interventions deliverable through existing community health systems remain scarce. This study systematically adapted an adolescent nutr

Art-Based Intervention to Promote Psychological Adjustment, Self-Concept, and Quality of Life in Children: Protocol for a Cluster Nonrandomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Children's mental health is a critical public health priority, with approximately 8% of children aged 10 years or younger experiencing mental, behavioral, or emotional disorders. Despite evidence supporting early intervention, access to mental health services remains limited, particularly for socioeconomically disadvantaged populations. Art-based interventions have emerged as promising approaches to support mental health and socioemotional development. However, significant gaps persist in understanding their efficacy, scalability, and long-term impact. OBJECTIVE: This study aims t

Impact of plant sex on endophytic microbial diversity and community assembly in dioecious species.

Dioecious plants show marked sexual dimorphism in morphology, physiology, defense, and life-history allocation, yet differences in endophytic microbiomes remain understudied. We compared endophytic bacterial and fungal communities between male and female individuals of four dioecious species-Eucommia ulmoides, Taxus wallichiana var. mairei, Ginkgo biloba, and Morus alba-by high-throughput sequencing of bark (E. ulmoides and T. wallichiana var. mairei) and leaves (G. biloba and M. alba). Sex significantly influenced the assembly of bacterial and fungal communities in all species. Bacterial alph

NCD-SCAN: A Digital Health Tool for Community-Based Non-Communicable Disease Risk Screening by Lady Health Workers in Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) account for the majority of premature mortality in low- and middle-income countries, yet early detection remains limited within Pakistan's primary healthcare system. Lady Health Workers (LHWs) represent a large, trusted, community-based workforce with potential to support digital NCD screening. This study assessed the feasibility, acceptability, and early implementation of NCD-SCAN, a mobile application integrating validated tools for cardiovascular, metabolic, cerebrovascular, lifestyle, and mental health risk assessment. Postmortem Skeletal Microbial Community Composition and Function in Buried Human Remains.

Bones and teeth can provide a lasting resource to identify human remains following decomposition. Bone can support dynamic communities of micro- and macroscopic scavengers and incidental taxa, which influence the preservation of bone over time. Previously we identified key microbial taxa associated with survivability of DNA in bones of surface-decomposed human remains, observing high intra- and interindividual variation. Here we characterized the postmortem bone microbiome of skeletal remains in a multi-individual burial to better understand subsurface bone colonization and preservation. To un

Exploring Challenges and Co-Developing a Nutritional Resource for Antenatal Care: A Participatory Stakeholder Engagement Study With Midwives and Public Involvement.

BACKGROUND: It is important that midwives discuss good nutrition and optimal weight during antenatal appointments, yet this rarely happens. Earlier research suggests that limited time, plus insufficient knowledge and skills are barriers to this. AIM: To engage antenatal midwives in stakeholder discussions to explore their perspectives on the design and delivery of a nutrition resource. METHODS: This qualitative study used a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach. Twenty-six midwives (19 community-based; 7 hospital-based) were purposely recruited from four NHS sites in Northwest England

Pediatric Stroke in Asia and Africa: Epidemiology, Etiology, and Resource-Stratified Care Across Geographic and System-Level Disparities.

Pediatric stroke is a rare but serious cause of morbidity and mortality, with disproportionately high burden in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Asia and Africa report the highest global incidence and prevalence, driven by region-specific risk factors such as sickle cell disease (SCD), moyamoya disease (MMD), and infectious etiologies. Despite this substantial burden, data from these regions remain limited and fragmented, hindering effective clinical care and policy development. Incidence rates across Asia and Africa consistently exceed those in high-income countries. Western Sub-Saha

Key determinants of integrated health service delivery: lessons from a pilot study on HIV and non-communicable disease integration in Zambia.

INTRODUCTION: Integrating HIV and non-communicable disease (NCD) services is an essential strategy for improving health outcomes for people living with HIV (PLHIV) and NCDs, and may optimize resource utilization, use of patient time, and healthcare costs. This paper examines the determinants that motivate and shape the implementation process of NCD integration into HIV services, as well as the factors that influence successful integration. METHODS: Nested in a pilot implementation trial, this study employed a qualitative case study design to collect data following the introduction of an integr

Predictors of metabolic syndrome among teachers in under-resourced schools in South Africa: Baseline findings from the KaziHealth workplace health intervention.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) account for most of global deaths, with rising prevalence in low-and middle-income countries. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of interrelated NCD risk factors, including obesity, dyslipidaemia, hypertension, and hyperglycaemia, that amplify NCD risk. Four leading modifiable factors driving NCDs are physical inactivity, tobacco and alcohol use, and an unhealthy diet. Teachers in under-resourced schools face significant health challenges, with their wellbeing often overlooked in South Africa. The prevalence and severity of MetS, adherence to physical activ

Distribution of a photographic atlas did not reduce postoperative care utilization after pediatric circumcision or the indispensability of the pediatric urology clinic nurse.

BACKGROUND: Surgery in children is increasingly ambulatory, and caregiver responsibilities for postoperative care can produce anxiety. Prior studies have suggested the distribution of a photographic atlas can mitigate caregiver anxiety and reduce clinic phone calls and in-person presentations after pediatric penile surgery. OBJECTIVE: A pilot study of the ability of a photographic atlas, distributed to caregivers, was aimed to be conducted to reduce postoperative resource utilization.
